I definitely recommend the Evans EQ patches you're using on the KD-10, and all of its variants. It helps prevent it from caving in so much, and sticks and fits the kd-10 size perfectly. I'm referring to the double-bass version, you get about 1/8" to spare on each side, it looks nice. It does increase the sound just slightly, like a small "thump", but well worth with it given the extra protection it provides. Great tips here, thank you.

Late to this party, but the manual for the Roland KD80 specifically says not to use felt beaters. Which I found out AFTER I made a hole in the mesh head on it using a felt beater!

Good video, Luke, I've been playing eDrums for 9 years and I agree with everything. I did ruin one mesh head using a plastic beater, appling the patch is an eazy fix, like you said. On top of that, the patch enables me to use the felt beater, which is makes my KD-10 quite a bit less noisy. I've also experienced the mesh heads eating away a bit of wood of my hickory sticks over time (we're talking months if not years).

Yup always used bass drum patches and always had great results and longevity. I use nylon tip sticks, but only because I liked the sound they made on my acoustic drums/cymbals and just transferred that preference to my e-kit. Never had issues with these sticks on my kits. I’m mindful of looking after the tips so no rough edges etc and it’s never been an issue. I use a small mixer, 3000w amp with a pair of 15inch passive bins. Sounds good, but yes I can concur the sound is very different between headphones and amplified sound….. you can set up the EQ etc of your drum sounds on the brain module while using headphones, then listen to them via your amplified setup to find it can have a different tone/feel than your fine tuned headphone setup 🤣😂 My setup is a little complicated because I have a Roland TD27 & TD12 (expanded kit) working in tandem. So I use a small mixer to then output their combined sound to another small mixer that feeds the amplified sound. Not ideal, but does the job, just need to be careful to get the levels correct as the amplified sound is supplied via 2 mixers. I could use the TD12 midi function to run both units, but I want the TD27 to be the lead module, so midi use is out.

Great video! I was wondering why I shouldn’t use the felt end of the beater. I’ve heard it before but it was never explained. As for amp, I’m very happy with my Simmons DA2108. Only 8” but the bass gets quite low and it has BT, which my edrum doesn’t have. It also has an out headphone jack so I can now BT music and play along over the speaker OR via the headphones. Sound quality wise it is quite good. And I am picky about sound quality. I tried a Chinese Amazon special “drum” amp that had good reviews and as this fellow mentioned they sound quite terrible. Like very terrible.

Thank you for these e drum tips. My DW 3000's stock felt beater also tears through the Evans EQ pads after a while, but they are the best that i have tried. I like the feel of the felt beater compared to the plastic side. The EQ pads are much more cost effective than a new mesh head for your kick drum.

Yeah, sounds like the best way to look at it! It gives you the feel you want and a cheap patch that usually comes in pairs is way cheaper as a consumable!

BTW, I was trying to find a comparison of Roland KD220 with other Roland KD offerings. I'm not sure if you have done such a review, and I couldn't find it in your video collection. Do you have any wisdom about that device? Full disclosure: I've seen one advertised as a separate item, and I'm considering the purchase.

You're welcome! Unfortunately not, no. I've not used any of the Roland "full size" kick drum solutions. I've used a DIY kick for a long time and before that it was a KD-120 and KD-8.

I just got some no name runber stick tips off Amazon to reduce tip noise on my low volume cymbals with elastic mutes and they work great. They come in different colors and they have a piece that comes down the neck of the stick and they stay on. The mesh heads on the drums were already quiet enough without tom resos and a rubber snare rim guard. The sticks I had just happened to be nylon tips so I wasn't worried about damaging anything but if you are I would recommend them. I use the side of my dw kick so it's plastic but I did with a regular head too. I bought a patch but it made it louder and I'm going for silence so I took it off.

Spot on about nylon tipped sticks. I've been using Pro Mark nylon tipped sticks for years, but when they got acquired by D'Addario in 2011, I noticed the quality of sticks wasn't quite what it once was. Most obviously I noticed that there is frequently a sharm "seam" in a lot of the nylon tips. This can definitely damage your mesh heads quick. If you're buying in person, feel them with your finger and grab a pair that doesn't have it. If you buy online, like Luke says just sand it a bit with some fine grit paper.
@TheeDrumWorkshop
@TheeDrumWorkshop 3 жыл бұрын
What a shame about the drop in quality. I've not used Pro Mark sticks since about 2 or 3 years into drumming but I remember them being decent at the time. Always good when there's a simple solution though!

I actually use Zildjian anti-vibe (nylon tip) sticks. These sticks are hollowed out and a rubber bead is inserted in the guts of the stick. I only use these for e-kits and find them awesome. Try using these sticks, then immediately using conventional sticks….. it’s like chalk and cheese. The vibrations up your hands/arms is very evident in the normal sticks. I still use conventional sticks for acoustic though, Don’t think the anti-vibes would have great longevity on real cymbals or hi-hats 🤣

Slightly OT but I noticed the rubber from the cymbals was getting into the grain of the wood sticks. I ended up mixing some epoxy glue and applying a thin coat to the ends of the sticks to seal the grain.

Hello I was wondering if you would recommend using bundle rods or hot rods by Pro-mark on mesh heads?
@scottbillings3677
@scottbillings3677 2 жыл бұрын
Just an opinion on your question, I wouldn't. Just as you get no change of sound out of the speakers if you used wire or nylon brushes on a mesh ekit, you won't notice the change and there will be no different sound from the rods, only a lighter hit. You can get the lighter hit by changing to a lighter/smaller stick. I've played 8DN on my TD20 kit for 16 years. No need to play bigger sticks. This goes along with why you find "Brushes/Mallets" kits in the edrum kit lists often. They've sampled acoustic drums with brushes or mallets and you trigger those samples with your regular sticks but get the brush/mallet sound out of the speakers.

Won't adding a patch to a Roland 10 dampen it? Will the piezos be able to pick up the full current/charge after adding the patch?
@TheeDrumWorkshop
@TheeDrumWorkshop Жыл бұрын
In my experience, the difference when adding a patch is negligible. You're still hitting a surface with a felt-coated plastic/wooden/plastic beater and the piezo only picks up the vibrations of that action, it doesn't need any fancy detection for a kick drum.

@TheeDrumWorkshop
@TheeDrumWorkshop 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, you can use the AUX trigger input for pretty much any pad. You'll need to swap to the correct preset for it in the trigger settings (if your module is on software 1.02 then there should be a preset for it, if it's on 1.01 there won't be and you should probably update your module).

Can wee use felt on a kd a22?
@TheeDrumWorkshop
@TheeDrumWorkshop 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, the KD-A22 has a rubber pad surface so felt shouldn't cause any problems. A lot of people still recommend sticking a patch on the KD-A22 (or KD-220/200 etc) to help increase the longevity of the pad though. I don't have one myself so can't say for sure.

Nylon tips dont leave marks like wooden tips on rubber cymbals. And bass drum patch is a no brainer. Patch=$5. Roland mesh head= $30-70 dependimg on size. Plus if you sell the bass trigger you wont have to discount it for a torn head. I use 303 protectant on my cymbals.

I can almost guarantee you'll have excellent luck with the Evans EQ patch. I'm using it on my KD-200 MS (basically a KD-10 inside an acoustic looking head), and it sticks great. Just make sure to press it on firmly, and I personally let mine sit for a few hours before I started playing, to help secure the "seal", so to speak. It's a perfect fit too, and looks real nice. You get 2 per pack for like $5 on amazon.
