Female Sergeant of the Guard SGT Ruth Hanks Relieves the Sentry of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery
SGT Ruth Hanks, a dedicated member of the U.S. military, fulfills a prestigious and solemn duty as the Sergeant of the Guard by relieving the sentry of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery. This significant act is part of a long-standing tradition that underscores the nation's respect and honor for its fallen soldiers who remain unidentified.
The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier: A Constant Vigil
The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is perpetually guarded 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, regardless of weather conditions, by the Tomb Guard sentinels. These sentinels are all volunteers and are regarded as the finest soldiers from the elite 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment, known as "The Old Guard." The regiment is headquartered at Fort Myer, Virginia, and has the distinguished responsibility of guarding the tomb, among other ceremonial duties.
Historical Significance and Construction of the Tomb
The establishment of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier dates back to March 4, 1921, when the United States Congress authorized the burial of an unidentified American serviceman from World War I. This initiative aimed to honor and symbolize the sacrifices of all unknown soldiers who died in service to the nation.
The unknown soldier was brought back from France and interred with great ceremony on November 11, 1921. The tomb itself is a striking three-level marble structure. The lower two levels consist of six marble sections each, while the top level is composed of at least nine blocks with a rectangular opening in the center of each level. Through these openings, the unknown remains were carefully placed into the ground below. The rectangular opening is sealed with a stone other than marble, providing a respectful and secure resting place for the unknown soldier.
The Role of The Old Guard
The 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment, or "The Old Guard," holds the honor of being the oldest active-duty infantry unit in the Army, dating back to 1784. Their role in guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is one of the most visible and revered duties they perform. The sentinels undergo rigorous training and selection processes, ensuring that only the most disciplined and dedicated soldiers are chosen to stand watch over the tomb.
A Symbol of National Respect
The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier serves as a poignant symbol of national respect and mourning for all unidentified soldiers who have lost their lives in service. The continuous guard and ceremonial changing of the guard reflect the nation's commitment to honor these individuals and recognize their ultimate sacrifice. The presence of soldiers like SGT Ruth Hanks, who relieve the sentries and maintain this sacred duty, highlights the ongoing dedication of the U.S. military to uphold the dignity and memory of its fallen heroes.

it is dictated that any and all members of the armed services salute any Medal of Honor (it's official name but it is bestowed by Congress) recipient regardless of any difference in rank. Hence, upon crossing paths a general is compelled to salute even a private if they have won the MOH.

The first time I visited the Tomb of the Unknown, I was age five, and stood so still I could barely breathe. They were real bayonets and I assumed they’d be used, if necessary. you're a sucker, too. none can meet the real standards...which come after all this diagnostic bullshit everyone in D.C. is fixated on. the standards will be changed and men's organizations WILL BE broken up. That's the goal; not national defense. The message is being sent loud and clear thru the rank and file by commanders - just like at Ranger School. Feminsist know how, with their allies on the left, to harness power and intimidate people. they get their political generals lined up (during eight yrs of Obama) and make happen what they want to happen. they are dictators at heart and wielding power comes naturally to them. they will never accept one woman in a 1000 or one in a 100. As soon as the dam busts, the standards will be changed to suit the avg female recruit...just like the current standards are there to suit the avg high school or college male. avg femme can't do that so changes will occur, while clowns like you keep mumbling about standards. you're clueless about the real power play and how it's going down. just like fed law enforcement 35 yrs ago. was going to be one standard there, too. Today? 20% quotas across the board for decades and separate tests. Where are all the gd liars now hollering "one standard?" No where to be found and feds haven't been the same since.

20 April 2017. My father, Carl Douglas Terry, was a guard at the Tomb in the early 1930s. I have a picture of him there. The volunteer Tomb Guard sentinels go through rigorous training for the high honor of being chosen to stand guard & march through all kinds of weather. To me, they may be at the Tomb of the Unknowns but they are guardians of the graves of all those peoples buried at Arlington. While the dead are "asleep", as the Bible says, & know nothing, no matter where visitors go on those sacred grounds, let them be quiet & respectful, thinking what sacrifices were made by the fallen ones for our country.

Really? Which standard was lowered to allow for this female to be integrated in? Please be specific and cite sources. I keep hearing that claimed but so far not one person in the last ten years has been able to specify a standard that was lowered nor cite a source for their claim. Bear in mind, you would be addressing the proud uncle of a female gunnery Sergeant who has been awarded a purple heart and bronze star and who went through precisely the identical training as her male counterparts and could probably shoot the flea off your nose with minimal effort nor any marks on your face. She has one of the highest marksmen ratings in the history of the U.S.M.C. She has also completed 4 tours in Afghanistan and one tour in Iraq. She's also a 3rd degree black belt in Karate. So go ahead, tell me which standards you are talking about.

As Mel Gibson said in "We Were Soldiers", when the stuff starts flying, you will care not about the color of the skin of the person you share a foxhole with, nor will you care by what name they call God. As long as U know that person has your back, and they know U have theirs, that's all that counts. My Dad told me that his Cbt Avn Egr Co in the ETO had Christians, Jews, and atheists, and they only cared that you had their back and you only cared that they had yours, that War reduces everything to the lowest common denominator, and those who have not walked a mile in those boots only complicate the issues and are arrogant if they think they know better. Worked for me.

I really do not understand, but I would love to. I am a staunch supporter of the military, that gives us the rights to live our lives with freedom. I do not understand why they guard this tomb 24 hours a day 365 days a year and have these innate ceremonies here but not, for instance and as far as I know, at the Vietnam Memorial, or the USS Arizona Memorial. I mean those brave Men died just the same.

When in basic training the DI asked for a volunteer to teach hand to hand to. She put up her hand. She took down the seasoned DI twice her size in 3 seconds. He had to be taken away on a stretcher. She's now an E-5, combat seasoned, very decorated including a purple heart and as good as any Marine of either gender.

+Lindsey Foss Only soldiers you say? The feminists in this thread have been watching way too many female superhero movies and don't have a clue what combat is really like. I saw a video on a squad in Iraq that looked real funny, but I didn't laugh. The female "soldier" tried 6 times to kick in the door, a male did it once. If this were a battle, that bitch would have gotten the entire squad killed. Female fantasies do not belong on the battlefield. Thomas
@tdfisk
@tdfisk 8 жыл бұрын
+Konrad Stolzerfaust So you think women are just as effective in hand-to-hand-combat? I've fought hand-to-hand with knives and it's not like the movies. Maybe one out of a hundred thousand women can do it. You want to know what REAL hand-to-hand combat is? You use brute force given you by that nasty male hormone testosterone to force the enemy into a position where his head is pulled back and you shove the knife under the chin and back into the brain. Then you look him in the eyes as he dies. You think this a fucking movie, stop talking out your ass. BTW, feminists were claiming that in just one year there were over 20,000 sexual assaults of women in the US military. A bearfaced fucking lie. The big question never asked is how can a woman fight a man in battle when she can't even defend herself from sexual assault that isn't even violent (any violent rape and the other soldiers or sailors would kill him)? On my first ship a couple of sick fucks decided it would be fun to shove a foxtail up the younger sailors ass and I was one. They caught the other, but I was too fast. That night the biggest jumped in rack and said I was going to get worse. I pulled my knife and put it to his throat. All I said was, do that again and you're a dead man and I gave him a nick on throat to remind him. The practice was stopped. Just keep in mind that in a real war that takes a lot of our soldiers prisoner, the women will be repeatedly raped. Get back in the fucking real world. Thomas

The ceremony is amazing and probably the most memorable of the things I took in during my visit to the states. It's precision and dignity lends a somber feeling in the air when it takes place, but when you remember that these people do this every day all year round in all sorts of weather, it really brings it home. What matters to us shows in the time, dedication and effort we put into a task, and the 3rd infantry regiment does a great job making that particular point.

My next oldest sibling is married to a guy of Polish heritage. He's a great guy. Americans think highly of the Poles. Situated in the middle of rather bothersome neighbors in Europe over the last few centuries, the Poles have nevertheless shown great resilience, a trait Americans readily identify with, and who led the charge which brought down the Soviet Union. And we Yanks also have great memories in our Revolutionary times of our first military engineer, General Kosciusko, who was of immense help to General Washington, who was blessed by Providence with great assistance: the naval transport master from Massachusetts; the drillmaster from Prussia; the son he would have loved to be his own, the Frenchman, Lafayette; the Boston book merchant who read up on how to make efficient use of artillery, and who Washington asked that he sit still in the boat ride across the Delaware because his swinging gonads would upset the boat's balance; the Rhode Island pacifist who became, first, his Quartermaster General, then, one of his greatest battlefield commanders; the backwoods general who drove the Brits crazy, whom they could never corner.

He went on to say it was in the single digits in temperature and windy. A tree branch whipped him just below his left eye. He said it took everything not to move an inch. He felt the warmth of the blood. Afterwards, of all people to talk to him was the mother of the deceased. She just happened to see it happen. After talking to him for awhile, she told him, " my son thanks you. I'm positive he had seen it happen." It took him everything not to cry.

To the disrespectful idiots that thumbs downed this video.........never mind, you can't read any way so there is no sense in going on explaining to traitors, cowards and Haters of our country. May their own graves be quickly filled then forgotten... God bless those and their families who keep us safe at the cost of their lives. Saw this on my eight grade class trip back in '59. The most solemn ceremony I have ever witnessed. Seeing it after all these years; it has a greater reverent meaning then my 15 year old head could hold at the time.

Hoo Rah Sargent! I want to just say how proud I am to see a fellow soldier and a female here! Women are just as much a part of the military mission as anyone else! Thank you for your service!

I had the great honor and privilege of attending the Changing of the Guard yesterday. In the blistering hot D.C. sun, the participants were absolutely flawless. It was an amazing thing to see in person, and I'd encourage EVERYONE to do it at some point in their lives.

What these few select Soldiers do it beyond difficult. I was a Warrant Officer (Army Blackhawk pilot 26+ years. I had a Warrant Officer buddy who was in the Sgt of the Guard as a SGT. He was a TOP NOTCH Trooper. My hat is off to these men and women.

@Collateral coffee: Why would you make such a disrespectful post? Dustoff85 had just made a respectful and excellent comment. So who the hell are you, to come along and call him an idiot? I GUARANTEE that if you could not hide behind the cloak of anonymity--that you would be singing a far different tune!

I love that this video is nearing 2 million views. It's a good reminder that a lot of people care about things like this. I waited with a group of about 100 on lookers to watch the changing of the guards and it was unforgettable. I have an audio recording of it and you could hear a pin drop between the marks and arms. I get it that "Fails" and "Stupid Human Tricks" are popular, and that the 6 o'clock news runs a lot of garbage. I'm just happy that we have KZfaq where I can find things like this and other meaningful information.
