Loose fences invite trouble. In this video I review a fence stretcher made in Australia by James Higgins. This tool allows you to quickly, safely and easily maintain barbed wire fences and prevent bigger problems. I show you how the tool works demonstrate its use and give a few tips on staying safe working with barbed wire.

Bought one of these with the needle after watching this video. I found it really simple to use, and I actually enjoyed working with it. The stretcher is really well made too. I really enjoyed watching this video again, but it's even better when I held my tongue right ;)

I get so much from all your videos Tim, and I really can’t put anyone of them as my absolute favourite. However, this one is right up there with your best. I just bought one of these strainers based on your review. It’s not the first time I’ve bought something after looking at products you feature in your videos. I really appreciate your frankness and clear delivery of your subject matter. Thanks so much

I see these types of things at field days all the time, but my knowledge of fencing currently extends as far as deciding it's probably not a good idea to experiment with peeing on the ones with insulators! I need to learn how to fence, so appreciate the great videos you do on this Tim.

Love your videos Tim. Tip you can drill out your handle of the fencing pliers to bend your wire over a secound hole small wire thru the metal removal(staple) side.

My dad takes a claw hammer place the wire in the claw of hammer and twist hammer 45 degree along fence. Move down 12 inches and repeat until tight. Very fast.

The only other good method I know of re-tensioning barb wire is to get those#4 crimps for twisted wire. Just strain with a regular chain stainer, cut the slack wire between the strainers, and slap on a crimp. But as usual, Tim's method is cheaper, no crimps!

I dont have that tool, I just twist the wire up and then put a plain wire through and twitch it up to stop the twisted barb from unwinding. I suspect this is compromising the barbs strength compared to using the tool you used here ? I saw another guys solution where he just twists up the barb using a large staple, then twitches the staple back onto the barb using the staples legs. Will give that a go next time

I love my texas fence stretcher but that one is cool too (don't get the cheap chinese ones they break almost immediately). I really like that needle, i wonder if something like it is available in the states.

Can the Higgins wire stretcher be used to repair/join broken wire too? If so can you a video on that or provide a link if it already exists showing how it’s done. BTW I bought these recently and used them yesterday to fix a very slack old barb fence. It worked a great.

Glad you like them, they are a winner with barb! You could use them with plain wire (the old 8 gage stuff) but I would not advise twisting high tensile wire as this significantly weakens it. Cheers.

Yes Ian they can be used to fix broken wire, I need to make a video showing the technique, but give me a call if you like to discuss (number will be on your tax invoice)

Hi Tim , great tool never seen one these here in the UK, usually strain up with a Hayes and have enough wire to make a double loop join ,saying that would you do this twice on one wire or take two bites with the tool? Great video's so much to take in .... can I send you pictures of my fencing using your instructions on FB?

Hahaha... I do the same thing with instructions Mr. Thompson.... If I have to read the instructions... I probably shouldn't have bought the tool in the first place!

I'd enjoy my day a lot better not fixing fences, having a couple of quite ones on the back deck taking pot shots at the neightbours cattle ;) Looks like a great idea now Tim. I'd seen them before but wasn't convinced because I couldn't see how they worked. The 12" wire links seem like the go. And if it goes slack again, just replace the links. Might have to invest in a set. I'm all for easy maintenance.

Tim what do they call those things you just broke off? I was hoping to put some on barb wire from being pushed up but don't know what they are called and where to buy. Also can you please do a barbed wire fence installation demo including straining the wire? Our bull keeps breaking the fence and until we do an electric outer fence need to get a decent fence put up. Thanks

Like them Tim. Thanks. Would these work to pull ringlock back in line where the roos have separated the wires vertically? Some you can pull by hand, but others are just too hard. Cheers.

A good beating with a cheep aluminum edged bullet level usually does the trick. Or put the level on and beat that with your wire cutters. Aluminum is softer than zinc so you don't damage the galvanised wire.
