Not only is it small, light, and affordable, it sounds amazing and very different to the Fender '65 Deluxe Reverb. It goes from Fender clean to "gnarly" on the "Custom" channel which offers the "Bassman Tone Stack". Both the Vintage and the Custom channel share the Reverb and Tremolo which is a feature not available on the '65. This '68 Fender Deluxe Reverb will be a fixture for my live performance and studio work.
A big thanks to Dr Ric for being a part of this video demo.
Amplifier Blurb:
1968 was a transitional year for Fender amps, with tone that was still pure Fender but a look that was brand new. With a silver-and-turquoise front panel and classy aluminum "drip edge" grille cloth trim, the Deluxe Reverb received a fresh new face as it remained the ideal recording and performing amp. Small, light and moderately powered, it produced big tube tone, with world-class Fender reverb and vibrato effects. For countless guitarists ever since, the Deluxe Reverb has been the go-to amp for classic Fender sound.
The '68 Custom Deluxe Reverb Amp pays tribute to the classic look, sound and performance of Fender's late-'60s "silverface" amps. In a special twist, both channels boast reverb and tremolo, and the "custom" channel has a modified Bassman® tone stack that gives modern players greater tonal flexibility with pedals. The amp also features quicker gain onset and reduced negative feedback for greater touch sensitivity. The '68 Custom Deluxe Reverb's single 12" Celestion® G12V-70 speaker also delivers a more distinctively rock 'n' roll flavor.

Brad, I’m not primary a country player but the cover band I play in dabbles for sure. I think with the right EQ on the amp and a compressor pedal this amp can definitely get a nice country sound. Though I would recommend looking in to the ‘65 reissue. The ‘65 breaks up a little later and has the bright cap on it.

Mine does you can hear the more you crank it it gets pretty loud click pulsing to the speed when Vibrato is switched on w/.instrument or not any setting a pulse is going w/the speed . i never had a tube driven Vibrato before, is that ghost pulse'n normal? @@utubehound69 mine doesn't. If the vibrator off you can't hear any pulse from it. I plugged into a power conditioner in my living room and it made the hiss to much to bear. Touching my metal knobs on guitar stopped it or if I touched anything metal on a guitar pedal so I'm assuming it's a ground loop in my electrical system that I was hoping the power conditioner would take care of but it didn't. I guess I'll just have to get a really long power cord

One of the reasons I got the amp earlier this year was because I came across this review- great job! I've seen a few questions about the hiss; the dreaded 'white noise', so, to those considering this amp, I thought it might be useful to give some feedback on the subject. Yep, it's definitely got some hiss. It's not just the single coils either! This thing still hisses and spits whenever I put humbuckers through it. It also 'pops' when I turn on/off with the standby! BUT- and here is the thing- the hiss really is only there when I'm not playing and the sound it makes when I am playing is just lovely (and I'm a worse than average player!) which, for me, more than compensates for any white noise when I'm not actually hitting any notes. Shane from In the Blues wrote a great article about this and it's cousin the '65 DRRI and the relative question about being 'loud enough' to gig with and mentioned the white noise then, so I was pre-warned and expected it. And it's not a 'fault'- unless you call the fact it's designed this way (something to do with reduced negative feedback, too technical for me) a 'fault'. But it IS something to bear in mind. In a band setting/on stage any amp noise would get lost in the activity mix, so I suspect folks that purchased this to play quietly at home probably got a shock at the level of hum/hiss when they first turned it on! That said, even at '2' on the volume dial you can't hear the hiss when you are actually playing. All in all, I love the amp and the way it sounds. As an aside, I've also got the '65 DDRI- no white noise, no 'pop' and definitely no 'vibrato tick' (another story!) from that one but, for me, it has a more 'sterile' sound. The '68 has some character!

Once I heard and felt the tone of natural tube breakup through a Fender amp, I never looked at overdrive pedals the same. It's an addiction. It's like the notes bounce off the fretboard, and your pick controls how high they go. Even the best pedals dull that sensation a bit.

@PMO269
@PMO269 2 жыл бұрын
@@davidpopelka4073 believe me I’ve been playing tube amps for 35 years, including Mesa Boogies, Fender and Marshall, and there’s nothing comparable to an amp with no master volume (such as many Fender models). The choice to not put a master volume in their circuit is done on purpose, in this way when you increase the volume you saturate both the pre amp and the power amp tubes, and this gives you a unique sound and feeling on the strings. There’s nothing similar to that sound including Mesa Boogies that have been my main amps for over 20 years. Obviously the only way to use non master volume amps is through a power attenuator, and nowadays there’s plenty of outstanding models (I use the Tone King)

Fender thru Fender. Delicious. All Fender amps have that great spot where the amp is warm & responsive, but still tight. If you go any further they get wooly, which I know many people love, but it's not for me. I put the amp in that sweet spot, then push it over the edge with a nice overdrive for solos, so you get as much burn as you want, but no flab.

I just picked up one of these amps 2nd hand for $1,350. It'll be the last amp I buy (famous last words!). Overall, it's a great amp, but there's one small quirk; the tremelo is only active when the foot switch is connected (my Princeton RRI wasn't like that). This amp is fairly civilised in a domestic enviroment ... you can keep the volume down to 'bedroom levels' and it still sounds nice. Of course, that's assuming you own your house, don't live in an apartment & there's nobody else in the building :) The 68 CDR takes pedals well ... A Joyo 'American Sound' turns the Fender into a monster. Now I'm tempted to get the Joyo Californicator (the Mesa Boogie based pedal), however most of the time I just play straight in & keep the sound clean. I don't know how good the OEM tubes are, but eventually when I replace the tubes, I'll buy a reputable brand name set. Although the Princeton was a nice little amp, the Deluxe is definitely the way to go.

@Jonathan-L
@Jonathan-L 8 жыл бұрын
+KRUSTYskates ... Yes, $1350 is about $965US (I'm in Australia, not sure where you are). The local stores are asking $2,025 without haggling a deal, so when this one came up for a lot less, I grabbed it. Maybe I paid too much, but they're rarely available for sale, so I jumped at the chance. My dream amp is a Concert II (early 80's Paul Rivera model), but would be very rare to come by. Anyway, I've got it now and it'll be a long-term keeper ... my 21 year old son gets a decent amp before he gets his first car, the way life should be :)
@KRUSTYskates

oh gotcha! Im in the US. Good deal from the conversion. Still shopping for a used or vintage one. Went and played a 65 RI today and was wayyy too ice-picky at high volume. Loved the surf tone and lush reverb tho. Need to try the 68. Cant find it anywhere locally. Found a 68 Twin RI and loved it! But way too heavy. Hows your 68 DRRI play? Have you tried the 65?
@Jonathan-L
@Jonathan-L 8 жыл бұрын
+KRUSTYskates ... Hi Krusty, I know what you mean by that 'ice picky' tone ... I blame myself for not having a good picking technique, hence I lack the finesse required to play notes smoothly. I'd love to hear an accomplished player using my MIM Tele (Tone Rider Vintage pickups) & the '68 CDR and hear what it sounds like. The best tone I've heard from a Fender amp is John Heussenstamm playing a Tele into a Concert II (early 80s, Paul Rivera), but of course John's got a superb technique which would bring out the best from the guitar & amp. He could probably make the 68CDR sound nice, however the Concert II has a really lovely sound that needs to be experienced in a live gig scenario. The other thing I noticed with my 68CDR is that a tube(s) has become 'micrpohonic' (probably been that way before I bought it 2nd hand). I'm yet to locate the culprit. To answer your other question, no, I haven't played into a 65DRRI Blackface, so I can't compare the 68CDR. Oh, the one thing I can say about the 68CDR ... plug in a Les Paul, strum a chord and you get that Peter Green sound. Hunt yourself down a Concert II :)

He gorgeously played a few jazz chords towards the beginning, chords which shimmered more beautifully than if he had been playing a $30k archtop guitar thru any 50's jazz era amp including the infamous Standel 25L15. That, for one, was a remarkable feat. Two, he beautifully nailed AND super glued some clean BB KING ish tones with more clarity than BB himself ever got out of either a Fender Twin or the Lab Series L5 amp that was auctioned at Clapton's 2011 Crossroads auction. And three, his crude but succinct discriptions brilliantly detailed the various aspects of this amp as if he were a literary talent like Earnest Hemingway or Mark Twain.

Santiago Ruiz If break up/distortion pedals is a concern, would you stilll go for the 65? I played with a hot rod deluxe this weekend (volume at 3 - 4 aprox) that really opened my eyes.. like, I need a real amp (I've a small SS Yamaha amp..) and I remember having the same "blown away"experience with the DR (65 and 68) I'm also thinking that.. if I need too much gain for other styles I'd probably use an amp simulator (Positive grid BIAS) not the same, but it gets the job done. I play 90% clean, but a like some grit here and there ( Es 335, am std strat and a ibanish Yamaha) I play jazz, blues, r&b and ambient stuff (delays,loops) sorry for the long comment but you have so so much experience, I'd appreciate your thoughts a lot, keep up the fantastic job! Would you get the DR ? Or is there any other amp that i should look at? (Home use, small gigs)

I guess what I want to know is this - would you have been get those tones and still be heard (without being mic'd) if you'd have been playing with a drummer and bass player? I really fancy one of these, but ideally don't want the hassle of micing up for small pub gigs.

Hi Guys, great review! I've played with it a bit and the only negative thing that I noticed was that it was really noisy, even with the guitar volume turned down, you can really hear it in your video too, while Ric's speaking but NOT while he's playing, did you guys felt the same? Thanks in advance :)

MY QUESTION!! those amps dont have loop on them, so delay, reverb pedals...must be by the input, its the only way no doubt...is that a problem?? i mean...in other amps you use loop for working with delay pedals, because normally its the best way to do it. In this case is it a problem? do they work as usual and in a high level?? thanks!!

Another quick question Shane. You're just off to a gig in a pub / small club - your guitar and pedals are already in the car and there's a '68 deluxe reverb reissue and a Supersonic 22 sitting by the front door. Which one do you grab?

Great review - and you're a great player too, with top-drawer face melting capacity. There's some talk of reliability with this 68 customs - they're MIM rather than US - is that correct?

I cannot talk about the deluxe Rever reissue. However, I just purchased a circuit board from a brand new princeton reverb 68 reissue which a guy had gutted out of a new reissue amp. I am hoping to rebuild it and therefore have myself a reissue princeton for £59 plus the cost of transformers and a head cabinet that I will manufacture myself. I was so disappointed at the borad though. Very flimsy. There is a separate small board for the 2 input jacks and it connects to the main board via a small white cable. The connection is extremely wobbly and I could not believe how Fender can get away with selling such a cheaply built amp at the price they do. I might film it tonight and post a video on youtube. For gigging that map cannot be reliable at all. Needless to say I will modify the input jack on my build.

So this is a re-issue of the 1968? How does it compare to an actual 1968? How dos this amp compare to a Silver face Twin with JBL D120F speakers? I got that one, only Fender amp I have had..was thinking of getting another great Fender amp, thought you would have useful input. Your playing is totally kickin', by the way.

Do you think its worth the extra $$$ to go with the 68 Deluxe vs. the 68 Princeton reverb ? You get the 2nd channel that has a blackface tone stack right ? I wonder what the clean goes thru on the Princeton ? thanks

David trueslayor Bought this 68 DeLuxe this weekend. Great Amp. Played it with my Fender Strat and Gibson Les Paul. Both sounded great. Tried the 65 Deluxe too: more clean headroom but it does not have the little raw edge the 68 has on mid volumes. The 68 has more character and is a fair bit cheaper than the 65. I liked it much better with the Les Paul than the 65 DR. With the Strat the 65 is nice too. The Princeton is also ok but you really hear the difference of its 10 inch speaker. The 12 inch in the Deluxes handles the low end much better (and 6V6 Fenders have a lot of low end).
