In my opinion part of what helps the Blues Jr. fight about it's weight-class are the better than average Output Transformer. These are great little amps, they respond to modifications well and although not a Low Power Tweed Twin that can give that feel. The fact they have reverb it a big plus, sadly the reverb on this amp is not tube driven.
@JackFossett
@JackFossett 3 жыл бұрын
HK Guitar ya know the reverb is honestly the big detractor from this amp. It sounds much better with it turned off.
@hkguitar1984
@hkguitar1984 3 жыл бұрын
Jack Fossett I totally agree with you. If this were any brand other than Fender the reverb would be acceptable, being a Fender though one would hope they would have used a tube driver. Myself, I've found no single amp is acceptable. It won't be long I'll have as many different amplifiers as I do guitars. Great video Jack, thank you.

Well, I had one also, stayed one day only at home, got it back to the store, sounded to boxy for me. But I was thinking to get to it again and change the speaker for a greenback because I heard lots of great things. Should I get a 68 custom, Princeton 65 or 68 or a Blues Junior? :D

I used to have a 57 Tweed Deluxe and a Blues Jr and they were not even comparable For lower volumes the Blues was perhaps more usable, but with an attenuator the Deluxe was still way richer and fatter. No contest.

Great video with some outstanding tips. This is my first valve amp, so I took quite a while choosing, I believe mine is a pre-III MIM NOS. I love the way this amp sounds with my 79 The Paul. I made some adjustments based on your suggestions and I could not believe it, but it even sounds better. Thank you so much. Enjoyed the album. My grandfather was huge cowboy/western guitar music fan, Thomas Point really had me thinking of him.....that was very cool...another thank you. This amp is so perfect. At home or practice, I could not even begin to get the levels up to a nice level for saturation and near the clip if the wattage was ANY higher and yet mic'd, I screams that creamy tone with little effort (I tend to use the fat switch will just cut through a mix to give a solo a nice pop) I hate to use a lot of pedals (though they are unavoidable when doing covers). I do use a Blues Driver for heavier distortion, but there is nothing else you need with this beauty (and yet it IS very pedal friendly). The tone....ah, the tone. Where do you keep your volume on the guitar?
@JackFossett
@JackFossett 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the thoughtful response and listening to the music! I really appreciate that ~ I mostly keep the volume relatively high on the guitar, either wide open or backed off to no less than 7 or so. I find that less and I lose too much of the signal. I do frequently record with the volume at 9 or so just to tame a small amount of the brashness.

I have been looking at videos for this amp for awhile now, hoping for one exactly like this one! Your video is by far the most informative and in depth coverage on the FBJ that I have seen and I’ve seen my fair share! I bought my FBJ in 2006 it has the lacquered tweed cover, Jensen reissue made in Italy C12N speaker, cream board, “NOS”(new, old stock), made in Mexico with the “Limited Edition” Chrome plaque on the back much like yours and I run the Ibanez mini tube screamer. Thank you so much just wish I seen this video sooner👍🎸🇨🇦

Recently got my Blues Jr Tweed NOS with the Jensen speaker in it. I absolutely LOVE this amp! My first tube amp. Really appreciate this review, as it shows me how to get different tones from one amp like this. I have an American Strat and Epi Les Paul 60's Standard (2020). I can't get the crunch from the amp for the LP, but this amp gets just hot enough to make it sound really nice and thick. Next month I'm hoping to have enough for a Ts9 Tube Screamer. Your demo of it was amazing. Can't wait to put mine to work! Great review!

I just got my first Blues Junior today in a swap from an American friend. We were in Amsterdam and I just moved to Boston, so I gave him my Fender Bassbreaker and he had his Blues Junior sent to my place. Holy crap I'm blown away! I owe the man many a drink because this amp is leagues above the Bassbreaker imo. Taking a fair bit of the mids out and pushing it with a Boss SD-1 gets me the best overdriven tone I've ever heard myself play.

Thanks Jack. Have the same amp. That is about 5 or 6 years old. Played in a Classic rock band with this amp for 4 to 5 years. My band finally broke up in 2020 but lately I've been taking it to Jams. And I just ordered another set of tubes yesterday because it doesn't want to be set at the edge of breakup anymore and it has started to get a little harsh last week. Thanks for the eq tips. I didn't know that the reverb could make it brighter. I do run my master at about 9 though. I noticed yours was way lower. Looked like your master and volume were about 2 to 3.

I'm 70 years old and love my tube amps. Recently I have been playing through a 3 year old Marshall MG50CFX solid state guitar combo amp with a built in 12" speaker, or using it's 8 ohm speaker jack out connected to a 212 or a 410 cab. I am finding I can get any tone I want, clean, crunch, overdrive, distorted overdrive. I can't believe it, but it's true, it's a great all around amp. I play every day, all day long so I have the time to experiment with the EQ.

Bought one off a friend over a decade ago for $100. The reverb never worked but didn’t care cause it was such a deal. I Just replaced the original tubes for the first time and got a new reverb tank and it sounds killer, it’s still the same little amp but that reverb added a new dimension, and maybe it’s a placebo effect but with the new tubes it just sounds fantastic. Great playing. Just bought this amp. If you are in doubt, dont be. Its sound comes straight out of Heaven's gates. Beautiful cleans with quite a bit of headroom for jazz or whatever. And great drive further up. Good tone at living room volumes. Its a keeper, and for me instantly better than the IV from a side by side comparison, especially the reverb. Go now and buy it.

I have two BJ tweeds a Mex and USA. I will sometimes run them both in stereo, which is really cool and big sounding. The two amps separately sound a bit difficult maybe bc of circuitry and tubes or just age. But I like the versatility...and if one goes into the shop I can always easily get by with the other. And all for le$$ than a Deluxe Reverb...

Thanks for the review 👍 I can tell I use my Laney 50w tube amp and best tone I get when I'm use 70% and my settings is bass 10 mid 9 and treble 7 reverb 5-7 And I'm play a 1955 stratocaster. And this settings drive out the SRV tone ! His key was push the amp and then add Tube screamer 808 or ts9. As I'm playd outdoor we needed to microphone it to PA. See Rory Gallagher he did use 2 AC30 he play it hard why he had so big tone. Best regards from Sweden Scandinavia 🇸🇪

Hi Jack- Loved this video! I have been wrestling with the tone on my blues Junior for a while and the tips you gave here were fantastic. I play a 1972 Les Paul Deluxe with a Dimarzio PAF Humbucker neck pickup and a Dimarzio Super distortion Humbucker bridge pickup. One question- did you have the fat switch engaged in the Les Paul examples in the video? Thanks again for the cool info.
@JackFossett
@JackFossett 5 жыл бұрын
frankburrows sure thing, glad it helped! Some Les Paul clips had it and some didn’t. Generally I find a thicker tone guitar like a Les Paul doesn’t necessarily need it, but it helps push and drive more. Kind of a “to taste” option I guess.

Thanks! Actually it isn't. I prefer bigger Fender amps as I like a lot of clean headroom and a wider dynamic range.

Thank you for this review ! I'm wondering if this wouldn't be an ideal companion for my Reverend Warhawk and her revtrons pickups. playing some rockabilly till the end of the night... what do you think ?

I haven’t played the Warhawk, however, having played plenty of Filtertron pickups I do think this amp suits the tone and style
