Hi Bruce, I know all too well what the problem is with the reverb line in the Deluxe Reverb Reissue amps and how you can fix it. I went through the same problem with one I bought back the 90s, swapping it for another, and talking with the ever unhelpful staff at Fender. The one person was amp help was my amp tech. The problem resides in how Fender cut corners with some the wiring and circuitry with their reissue series they put out in the 90s. If you notice the the foot switch jack in the back of the is a 1/4” TRS arrangement. The Fender amps made up until the early 80s have a pair of RCA jacks. The wiring for the reverb line and vibrato (tremolo) are wired internally much differently on the reissue series compared to the original design of the Deluxe Reverb that dates back to the early 1960s. This is Fender at its cheapest. The reverb line is a very high gain circuit and is prone picking radio frequency (RF) interference. With reissue series Fender got shielding and grounding wrong. The matter is subject to where you live. When you sent your first purchase back to Melody Music they probably never had a clue what the problem is because they don’t have the kind of RF issues you have where you are located. Unfortunately, simply unplugging the the foot switch from the back of the amp won’t fix the problem. What I did fix the problem was pull the reverb tank from its bag and wrap the cardboard backing with tinfoil. Then I wrapped the entire reverb tank in foil, plugging RCA patch cables through the foil into the input jacks on the reverb tank. And here’s the important part, you want to make sure the negative leads on the RCA plugs are making contact with the foil that is encasing the reverb tank. What you will be doing is shielding the reverb tank because the peeps at the Fender don’t. And won’t even know what you’re talking about. Give what talking about a shot. It won’t cost hardly anything, just your time. It worked me. But I have never bought another reissue series Fender. I stuck most to the original vintage models ever since. I hope this helps. Dave

You are welcome, Bruce. I can assure if get the reverb shielded and the shielding grounded, your problem will corrected. Otherwise, all of Fender’s reissue series amps reverb have this problem. But it’s only subject where the is located. It might work fine in middle of the Golden Gate Bridge, but not at your place, near radio transmission towers etc. I kind of wonder if Fender is actually aware of this problem and are not going to admit to it subject to a massive recall. This is yet again another fine example of they don’t make ‘em as good as they use to. The vintage fender amps don’t have the RF issues the reissues have. Keep me posted on the outcome. It should work. And if it does, perhaps you can do a follow up video. Glad to be of help. May your day be a blessed one. Dave

Hi Bruce, I think you run into the same problem unless you get a vintage Deluxe Reverb built up through 1982. I know when I fixed the problem on my 1993 DR reissue I changed the cables. But recently changed them again. But I digress. Meanwhile, something has crossed my mind. I know there are some new variations on the Deluxe Reverb reissue that include variations that are robot assembled to custom shop hand wired blah, blah, blah.you have wondering, if the foil shielding and grounding didn’t work, how much worse have Fender amps become? Did you thoroughly try the foil trick? BTW there is a trick a good amp tech can do to test for RF issues with a walkie talkie. It works. But some amp manufacturers are really out to lunch on the subject of RF issues with their amplifiers. I have something like 25 amps and the only ones that have or had RF issues are my 93 Deluxe Reverb and a 2019 Bad Cat Cub III15R. The latter was an expensive item, like $2000. I haven’t delved into the problem with it. But all vintage amps made in the 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s don’t have RF issues. I do have a Matchless Lightning Reverb from the late 90s, I think. It doesn’t have RF issues. But you have me pondering where some Deluxe Reverbs are being made these days. China? Mexico?

I use to drive a tow truck with CB radio. Channel 18 on a CB will output from amps. I've used it to call for help to call the fire department during a call. This was 1976 before cell phones.. lol

Hey not sure if you fix the problem yet or not, but I do know your solution. I am a licensed electrician and have fixed this problem in studios several times. The issue is the grounding system inside of your house. What you need is an isolated ground. Basically what that means is you buy an isolated plug, and inside that plug it has its own grounding system separate from your home. You plug that into your wall, plug your amp into that and that should totally fix the problem.

Just Bought a '93 Deluxe reissue, Its immaculate condition but I guess it have the same problem like the new ones.. I can hear the tremolo and kind of a hiss when there is the reverb on.. I try to change the reverb tube and see what happens. I hope its not the caps or some burned resistance .. Then I have to take it to a repair shop..

I heard this is the issue specifically with the 64 custom deluxe reverb. I appreciate this video because like you, I am very picky and bothered by noise/loud hiss. As a clean player, any noise becomes distracting. I don’t see this issue with the PCB 65 deluxe. Also, I notice 0 of this sound with their 64 hardwired Princeton reverb. It must be the circuit which allows reverb on both channels. I noticed this exact issue with the one I tried locally which sadly made me pass on it and I got a 57 fender twinolux which is dead silent and threw a reverb pedal in front of it.

If you pay attention to the amp in the video, it's NOT the 64 handwires Deluxe, it's a typical production line 65 Deluxe reissue. I have the 64 Deluxe handwired and have no such issue at all. The only problem that I sometimes have with almost all my combo amps including the 64 deluxe is at some certain very low notes the cab can rattle. Which is not a huge issue as it cannot be heard when the amp is loud.

The grounding scheme of this design is aimed at lowest manufacturing time/cost and bugger all actual performance. Look at how the original amps were grounded internally and revise to conform as closely as possible to that scheme. All noise will be gone.
