A lot of variations in the MIJ E Series. Have one with hardtail. Serial number is approximately 2000 numbers higher. Stamped string trees, Fender Fender stamped on bridge pieces. Decal is under the finish. MADE IN JAPAN is at base of neck on back side. White plastic 5-way switch. Same codes on pots.ST-462 stamped on neck.

Have a similar E9 Korean, but with a flat radius. Yours has one hell of a slab and full sized pots. Totally thorough job . . . I learned a lot. I agree to keep as much as possible original. Your MIJ is a 'sleeper,' and will be worth a lot one day.

Thanks for taking time to comment. That guitar was sold quite a while ago but it was a good one! Have three more from the same era to sell off as well. They still aren’t fetching a lot of money so people can get their hands on a good one without breaking the bank.

I have the exact same guitar MIJ 1987 but it says Squier on the headstock. I got it new when I was 13 and it has sentimental value to me. The story of the mid 80s MIJ Fenders and Squires is very interesting. I would love to play mine again but the frets are horribly worn away. I may spring for a refret and maybe even a re-radius to 12".
@bbmade
@bbmade Жыл бұрын
It’s worth getting a refret for sure. I don’t know if I would change it to a 12” radius though, but that’s personal preference of course. Maybe play an Eric Johnson signature Strat first. I think that’s a 10” or 12” radius. A 9.5” radius is a good compromise and I’ve also done 7.25” to 10” compound radius boards which are sweet. Find someone reputable to do the work and you’ll enjoy playing that guitar for years to come.
@sunnys5150

@bbmade hey man and thanks for ur input. Yeah, so all my guitars have very flat radius becuse I mainly play Ibanez. I also recently built a partscaster with a Player Plus neck that also has a 12" radius. I really can't do with the 7.25 radius the orig neck has. I may just go for a 9.5 but we will see. As of right now I have a Fender MIM classic 60s replacement neck on the body with Pau Ferro board and it's also a 12" radius. Its nice but it just doesnt have that old mojo. No blood n sweat on that new neck. I just want to get this thing back to mostly all orig except for the elecs and hardware. I had to replace the bridge with modern spacing/ vintage mounting holes for that 60s neck so everything is good to go. Just gotta spring for the neck work. I'm gna feel 14 again once I get it all done. There's just something about those sentimental guitars we all own. 🙂 Cheers my friend

@@sunnys5150 Ahh, sounds like you would be happy with a 12” radius. I’m pretty stuck on 7.25” on Fender style guitars. 10” or flatter feels weird to me but, all personal preference. Follow your gut instinct if you get it refretted.

Very nice chap .... nice guitar. They hold a bit more value here in the UK I'd say. I guess that's because we don't have teh loyalty to the USA build and they sound excellent! Subbed for hopefully many more videos.

Matt Allen - thank you! They really are good solid guitars. It seems harder to find the Fender labeled ones as opposed to the Squier labeled versions. They seem to me the same instrument. I bet you’re right about the USA loyalty here. I have three more of these and one has the “Made in Japan” scratched off down into the wood.. Thanks again!

Shielding can help. If you want to do it yourself the conductive paint works pretty well. I’d clean the cavities with some compressed air, brush and vacuum out any debris. Brush on 2-3 coats of shielding paint and then put foil on the underside of the pickguard and a piece of of foil from the wall of the cavity to front of the body so it will contact the foil on the pickguard.

I have the same MIJ strat as this except mine is candy red. It has the exact same issue with the selector switch where there's some static/screeching noise as I operate the switch. Was the fix for you just to clean the traces and the internal contacts or was there a specific issue you had to correct in the switch? The solder seems to look fine, but would you recommend replacing the solder on the connections and the ground? Thank you for your advice, this video really helped me learn more about my MIJ strat.
@bbmade
@bbmade 6 жыл бұрын
The Goodest Dude for this guitar the fix was simply cleaning the switch. Since it’s a sealed switch it requires disassembly unlike the normal CRL switch you see in the American Fender guitars where you simply spray cleaner on it and move it back and forth a few times. You mention a screeching sound as you use the switch though which makes me think maybe you have some high gain tones you like? There was issue with the solder connections on this switch I simply desoldered everything so I could take the switch off the pickguard to work on it. Hope that helps!

I'm restoring an old E-series Stratocaster from the '80s and I'm curious if you know what the output is on the old E-series pickups? I'm debating whether it's worth the time/money hunting down old E-series pickups, or if I should just stick to the vintage-spec alnico pickups I've currently got because I much prefer low-output pickups. Thanks! I enjoy your videos. : )
@iainfreeman5112
@iainfreeman5112 6 жыл бұрын
TheCubasy I have one as well. I know they’re low output, I don’t have numbers. But they were the lowest output sounding guitar I had. Sound wise it was bright and sweet. I did like it really and personally preferred them to Mexican pickups I had, which are much higher output. I have replaced the pickups and whole wiring though. I just wanted a different sound. It was easier to replace all the wiring and pots so I can go back without much soldering. Personally I wouldn’t go looking for the original pickups if you don’t have them. But I’ve kept mine if I want to bring it back original to
@TheCubasy
@TheCubasy 6 жыл бұрын
Gotcha. People seem to ask outrageous prices for them unfortunately. As much as I like low-output pickups, my current set is just way too weak for the guitar, so I'll hunt down some old '80s U.S. pickups instead, those would be more worth the time/money. Thanks for your help!

I’m so sorry I haven’t seen this comment. It just appeared in my activity on my phone app today. I would say if you need pickups get something you’d really like rather than hunting down originals. They sound pretty good stock but I would pursue originals if I were in your shoes. I use Lollars in my builds but there are sooo many great pickup makers out there these days. I have three more Strats from this era to look over and put up for sale, just need to carve out time.

I have that guitar. I used it for 3 nights and didn’t used it again. Having to remove the neck to do a truss rod adjustment was not something I didn’t want to do. Who thought of that??????
@bbmade
@bbmade 3 жыл бұрын
I hear ya. It’s easier to make the guitar with the truss rod adjustable at the heel. Not sure that was Fender’s rationale but it does make it easier.

I don’t know why Fender doesn’t use threaded inserts with machine screws for the tremolo tension springs. I just think the wood screws look like a cheap way of doing it.
@bbmade
@bbmade 3 жыл бұрын
@Dennis Maxfield - My first guess would be cost. It might not seem like a big cost difference on a few guitars but on hundreds of thousands it adds up. It might be more work too which adds cost. I do like threaded inserts on bolt on necks. Thanks for the comment.
