The Guitologist

In the late 70s, Fender started making all their large amps with Master Volumes, Gain Boosts, and Ultra-Linear output transformers. This resulted in more headroom and power output, but it was also a controversial change amongst players, who sometimes claim these changes hurt the tone. In this video, we'll repair this completely original example of a 1977 vintage example and demo the tone to see if this is true.

The aroma of charred power transformer interiors is amongst my least favorite smells in the world. You didn't see Brad do a leakage test on those caps. The main reason is he already knows they're leaking (acting like a resistor). I would bet my vehicles on it. I've never seen one of those that wasn't leaking (at least in the last 20 years.

It doesnt change the sound at all anyway, ive change 100s of filter caps, and compared the sound after words, replacing out of spec resistors u can get a sound change or caps in the signal path but not bypass caps or filter caps, as long as you use same size otr measure them to see how much they drifted.

It's the customers amp. The customer tells Brad what work he wants doing to the amp, in relation to how he wants to use it. That is exactly what Brad he has done here. You can't leave old caps in a gigging amp. Don't have a go at a Guy for doing work that he has been asked to do.

Year ago, I pulled an older 70s Super reverb from a dumpster, took it to Mad Science Works in Raleigh NC where they replaced the caps. I also had to replace two busted speakers and then sold it to someone who I knew would take good care of it. That sure was a great sounding amp and I kinda wish I didn't sell it. But to me the Vibrolux/verb sounded just a taste better. I will always keep my eyes open because I hate seeing good amps tossed in the dumpster.

Some of the 70s Fenders tended to be a bit messier in the wiring, and the linear OT setup can tend to overdrive less easily, but they are still worlds better than todays reissues.

Back around 1965. when CBS bought Fender, the CBS engineers decided that they needed to get rid of the 'nasty distortion' that the Blackface amps exhibited, so they redesigned many of the amps - the larger ones, mainly - which players (who loved the 'Fender tone', distortion and all) didn't like. At the same time, CBS made changes to their production, many of which were deemed to make Fenders inferior (same thing happened at Gibson when Norlin bought them). "Can you say '3-bolt neck,' boys and girls? I knew you could..."
@ErikThomasMusic
@ErikThomasMusic 18 күн бұрын
Silverface Fender amps are usually great, and are excellent values. However, the main reasons in my opinion, that they don't hold up to the "Blackface" amps, is that the glued in baffles and glued up cabs, not finger jointed cabinets are a down grade over the pre 1972 SRs. Also lots of spaghetti and frankly some shoddy work happened in the 70s. If you have been inside a Silverface, you see plenty of poor solder joints and work that would never have passed QC pre-1969. 1969 was the year that the scales started to tip towards shoddy work and then the glued in baffles and cabs came in about 1972. HOWEVER, I'm only comparing these to classic "Blackface" amps. By modern standards, "Silverface" build quality is generally excellent. For those of you who will attack me for my opinion: I own a stock 1967 blackface Super Reverb and a 1969 silverface Super Reverb (and a bunch of other black and silver Fender amps). The build quality on the 1967 is much better than the 1969. They both sound great, but build quality-wise the 67 beats the 69. Again, the 69 is fine and is great by today's standards, but the 67 is better.

Man i had one of these back in the mid 80s and id give anything to have it back! I think mine was an early 70s model. It looked like it had been dragged behind a truck, and as it heated up you'd swear someone was frying fish. But, after those tubes heated up enough to light a cigarette on, it definitely had the God tone. Everything worked and it was full of that classic Fender sparkle. I paid $250.00 for it which was alot for a 15 year old punk kid. My pedal board consisted of an Austin distortion pedal, a japenese made Lotus flying V and that was my entire rig. All anyone needed back then was a good clean tone, and a good overdriven sound. This amp was freaking loud too man. Cranked up it had just the right amount of overdrive, and kicking the distortion on gave me a really EVH brown sound that was solid and respectable. Better than pretty much everything made today.

These mid/late 70's super reverbs were rated at 45 watts where the early ones were 40 watts. Begining in 1978, through 1981, they went to the ultra-linear versions where the power was rated at 70 watts using the same dual 6L6 output section. The ultra-linear amps get a bad wrap, but they actually sound fantastic if you're looking for super clean with a three dimential sound. Great for slide guitar.

I recently acquired a 75 pro reverb that is all original, including the caps. The amp sounds great and works just fine, but original caps from the 70s don't inspire great confidence in me whenever I turn the amp on. (Regardless of what some people think), so the amp is at a local shop right now awaiting new caps and anything else it might need. Can't wait to get it back! 45 watts, 2x12, and it came with a master volume, so it overdrives on its own!

Great vid Brad. Just curious, wouldn’t the increased value of the plate resistors alter the output section as far as power distribution? Also, did you check &/or replace the 1.5k screen resistors?
@TheGuitologist
@TheGuitologist 20 күн бұрын
What 1.5k screen resistors are you talking about? There are a lot of articles out there on Rob Robinette's page and Merlin Blencowe's page and others about the pros and cons of changing screen resistor values. The idea for me is to keep the screens more negative in relation to the plates to make overdriving the signal easier, for one, and better protection for the screens also.

I apologise, I got the tube nomenclature turned around. I was referring to the 1.5k grid resistors. Re the doubling up the screen resistors value, I can see how that would cause more breakup. Cheers for the reply.

gee, now you have to lug that monster around. There is a reason that I would prefer a deluxe or a princeton and mic it. Fender amps are all cool though.

Is that 4 x 12" speakers? In the 80's for a while a friend lent me a Super reverb with 4-12s, I though it was called a quad reverb though.

4 10s, the quad reverb had 4 12s and the same wattage as a twin

People who replace vintage tubes that work just fine in a guitar amp with modern tubes drive me up a wall. You’re never gonna get anywhere near the quality of the vintage tubes. They’re just not used in enough things nowadays for them to invest in the r&d to make more high-quality tubes.

Brad, your channel and projects and teaching style are all exactly what I think makes for time well spent on the 21st Century version of the "boob tube". But with that said there is one thing that is a "personal problem" I admit, but bro seriously, the goof version way you say TREMOLO makes me nuts!!!! Now I think you're goofing saying it that way, but others I know who watch your channel all say you do it intentionally. Can you set the record straight for us and please and tell us if you're kidding or not? Thanks very much!

Anyone who's ever dragged a Deluxe Twin Reverb or a similar Music Man 212 amp up and down stairs in venues or basements knows why these monsters were not as popular. Splitting the head from the speakers made lugging them around easier on the back and easier to shoe horn them into the back seat of a two door car. Most guitar players didn't own pickup trucks back then and SUV's with folding seats and hatchbacks hadn't been invented yet. You were lucky if one band member had a truck or van to help haul gear in. That's partly why small inclosed trailers caught on for bands and their replacements; those blood sucking DJ's that helped kill off weekend live entertainment.❤
