This is a FANTASTIC comparison! Phenomenal work. My set-up is somewhat a mix of the two, I use the David Allen Echoes set (discontinued, based off of the CS69+SSL-5 combo, but with more clarity) with an EMG SPC control installed. I get the traditional pickup construction and mid-range character of the CS69+SSL-5 set, with a built-in gain boost and presence control ala EMG. It works beautifully and makes it very versatile. Oh, and of course I also have the neck pickup mini switch. 😎 Cheers!

Nicely done. Nowadays pretty much any pickup can sound great with a few amp knob adjustemts and pedals. the thing that made me switch to the SA pickups is that I keep running more and more into heavily wired stages where there is a lot of interference which causes more noise on the passive pups that I find acceptable. The active EMG pickups tolerance for different settings and stacked tones is priceless... and yeah there is a bit of a difference in tone but honestly it is completely meaningless once you are in a band mix. That is all I got

Great video!! I have a set of DG20's in a Stratocaster and love them to pieces. I was skeptical about active pickups but after lowering them closer to the body and tweaking the SPC and EXG controls it's actually become my go-to guitar as it always sounds amazing under any condition I've thrown at it. Battery lasts a really long time too, very happy investment on my end. Would recommend!
@entrenuves
@entrenuves Жыл бұрын
Thats awesome, would you mind sharing your SPC EXG tweaks?
@aschilds
@aschilds Жыл бұрын
@@entrenuves Sure! These are broad settings, I tend to tinker with the settings based on amp, pedals, clean, etc. I keep my volume at 7 or 8. SPC is set at 3 if playing through dirt, 5 if I'm playing clean and the EXG I leave around 5 to start and then tweak as needed. Lowering the pickups (instead of keeping them pressed close to the strings) results in a much more mellow, dare I say "vintage", tone which makes it play nicer with all the effects I can stack when playing. They don't need to be flat against the body but the more space you put between the pups and the strings the more warm and less sterile the tone. If anything I'd say take ten minutes with a screwdriver and try it out, if you don't dig it it's an easy adjustment to make. P.S. - what DAW are you using when recording tracks?

I love them, but I have found that unless I'm playing Gilmour like tones, they just sound very off with anything else to me. I was scatually wondering if raising mine would increase the dynamics, but I might just lower them and see, maybe it's the heat that's too much. Anyways, my mod to them is running eq, in front boosting the 100hz, the 800s, then run a 20:1 upwards expansion. With that they start to sing and are very quiet.

Suoni Fantastici, complimenti. Ottimo lavoro.

As far as the pick-ups go...I notice the biggest difference in the Echo's piece and while I love the DG20's for the later stuff...nothing beats the 69's on the early stuff...They both sound great but I guess I have a bias.

Very cool.. I have a white strat with three EMG SA's but not SPC or EXC controls, and I might change out the bridge for an EMG 85.. I play mostly rock and blues or metal I guess you could say.. Mostly 70's and 80's rock. . I saw Pink Floyd as a teenager in 1977 on the Animals tour I think it was called? Pings on a wing, etc.. Great show.. It was killer and I remember it cost 12 bucks and i thought that was outrageous at the time, because it was like around 7 or 8 bucks most of the time for a show, but it was well worth it after seeing them.. Great tones man.. Love that tube driver. I have to have a flatter radius fretboard though. I can't deal with that 7.5 inch radius, but too each his own.. Great tones, and nice axes sir! I'm building the strat now with a Warmoth maple neck with maple fretboard.. White japanese strat body and standard US trem, etc.. Old 6 point US vintage trem, etc.. Putting on a nut tonight.. Great tones.. Thanks for this!
@pigxstix
@pigxstix Жыл бұрын
85 in the bridge is great, especially in a strat (as opposed to the 81) it's fatter with big low mids and has more of a fuller rock sound. The shine of the SPC control is it fattens up a single coils like the SA into humbucker territory so it works great with an S/S/S guitar. I don't think you'd need it for a humbucker like the 85. I never found a use for the EXP, it basically scoops the mids, technically it boosts highs and lows, but achieves the same effect of a scooped mid sound.

That was sick dude. I’m looking into upgrading my strat right now. It’s got a 7.25 radius and I’m not loving how much I have to work I have to do on it to get more than a full step bend in the upper registers. Any opinions out there?
@janharald2105
@janharald2105 Жыл бұрын
Thank you! It’s easier to bend on a 9.5, and especially on the B string in upper register where you ending up shoveling you fingers underneath the lower strings. It is also easier to set up than 7.25. In spite of this I still prefer 7.25 over 9.5. It feels more natural to play on and it «sits» better in my hand. I should also mention that my first electric guitar, the one I learned to play on had a 7.25 radius neck… It all comes down to personal preferences. Invest some of your time to set up string action and neck relief that fits you and your style of playing. Play it for some hours, and if you still not loving it I am pretty sure that I have a 9.5 in rosewood lying around which you can swap it with.
