@@tuotykoroky96 The US G&L's are amazing and that's a great price. However, keep in mind that the string spacing on the 5-strings are a bit narrow (17 mm?). I couldn't get along with the narrow spacing on my old 2500. If that spacing works for you though, they play and sound incredible.

Regarding the neck width and finish and so on: G&L offer customization of such things with a very small added price, so you could have a satin finished standard jazz width neck if you order from them. My apologies if someone has already pointed it out.

G&L JB hands down. I've owned close to 10 basses over the course of 20 years, I have 3 now and they're all G&Ls. They're a real unsung hero in the industry. That being said, I've had the opportunity to have a run of the new Fender American Pros and I must say, they're great. The Precision 5 was definitely the pick of the litter for me. With G&L, you have amazing build quality as well as even better options. With Fender, you have better resale value and the Am Pros definitely come with one bitching travel case. IMO both are legit choices.

I was in the market for a Jazz recently. My main bass is a Modulus Q5 but I've been wanting some retro tones. Got me a nice Precision but which Jazz to go for I wondered? Enter the Sire Marcus Miller V7... WOW!! Just Wow!! How they can make such a brilliant bass for so little I don't know but it punches way above its price range. Respect to the Big F and G&L 'n all but the V7 really does it...

For what it's worth, I have owned a G&L 4 string since the mid 90s and a 5 string since the 2000s. I think they are under rated basses that don't have the branding of a Fender nor a Music Man, however I feel they are hidden gems and bit of a connaiseurs choice. If you feel buying a G&L bass, go for the USA ones, not the Indonesian ones. The latter is a good starters choice but leaves you wanting as an experienced player.
@JG-ux7of
@JG-ux7of 5 жыл бұрын
I love every brand Leo Fender made. My first guitar was a Mexican Strat and my first bass was an American 72 Musicmaster that had the sweetest neck. I then fell in love with an American Jazz deluxe which was my favorite bass until I bought a 94' Musicman Stingray bass and realized the Musicman Stingray was capable of doing anything you ever want a bass to do. My first Fender guitar that I really loved was an early 90s Japanese Jazzmaster which later was replaced by a 72 thinline telecaster. My dad bought a G&L Legacy that really made me interested in G&L. It had a flatter radius making it easier for bends and I prefer the treble and bass knobs over the 2 tones that only work on 2 of the 3 pickups. I bought a G&L Fallout Tribute last year and loved it. I wanted to try and improve it so I put a Seymour Duncan JB humbucker in the bridge and a Bare Knuckle True Grit P90 neck pickup recently. I upgraded to CTS pots and a switchcraft jack. I also added a Tusq string retainer for the 3rd and 4th string and replaced the stock one with a Tusq retainer and switched out the nut for a Bone nut. All in it cost me under $600 and it's my favorite guitar right now. I bought the Fallout for $350 on Reverb, the pickups cost me about $150 for both on Reverb. The Tusq trees were 12 bucks and the nut was $8. The pots and jack were about $20 combined. I love G&L guitars, my next guitar will be a ASAT Special Tribute. They do such a good job on the Tributes and I like to mod my guitars so the G&L Tributes are perfect for me. I never had the balls to mess with my American Fenders or Musicman, the fear of devaluing them is too great. I love Fenders but I actually prefer G&L guitars over Fenders for reasons already stated.

The G&L JB (and JB-2) are terrific basses and a great value for the money. Large variety of tones are available, from deep almost-dub bass rivalling a P bass to a punchy, bright jazz tone. The sustain is unbelievable due to the proprietary G&L bridge. The neck is super-playable (older models have a satin finish). And the instrument is very light, about 6.5 lbs. Not as well-known as some other brands, they are very well made and something of a "well-kept secret" among moderately-priced basses.

I started playing bass first and when I started playing guitar I realized how much more theory I knew than so many guitar players. Bass players master modes and most guitar players are only familiar with Ionian and Aeolian. Most of them just play Pentatonic scales muting notes and wiggling their fingers fast. You always know a good guitar player when hes got the balls to play slow enough so that you can hear the notes ring out. The rhythm training is also important. You write better guitar riffs when you understand the bass, not just the rhythm/groove aspect but the melody and harmony between bass and guitar. I would also say bass players should learn to play guitar to some extent for the same reasons, when a bass supports rhythm, adds melody and harmonizes with guitar, it's at it's best.
