This is an extensive field evaluation of the #fenix TK 16 V2 #flashlight for use in tactical #searchandrescue operations. 'Tactical' simply refers to the need to adapt to changing conditions on the ground over the course of a long search. Such usage favors a smaller and lighter flashlight instead of the much larger (10K+ lumen) lights that are often used for targeted area searches.
My standard night loadout consists of a headlamp and two shoulder-mounted flashlights. The Fenix TK 22 UE is on my left shoulder and I have both red and blue filters for this light. The TK 16 V2 was evaluated as the 'right-shoulder' light in this exercise. That light is most often used to briefly (anywhere from 5-30 seconds) illuminate territory beyond the view of my headlamp.
This exercise followed a prescribed scenario and illustrates frequent use of the TK 16 V2 in a wide variety of wilderness conditions from wide-open spaces to narrow trails surrounded by trees. All five lighting modes are shown in the video.
The exercise was filmed with a Go Pro 9 at the LBJ Grasslands near Decatur, TX. Filming was at EV +0.5 which I've found provides a better on-average representation of how lights appear as I see them. The disadvantage is that up-close highlights and reflections appear brighter than when viewed with the unaided eye. Please keep that in mind during the video.
Each segment was recorded one-take with no re-takes.
The video is nearly 30 minutes in length, so if you want to fast-forward to the final evaluation, I can offer two quotes from the video.
"On a scale from 1 to 10 where 10 means exceeding all possible expectations, this is as close to a 10 as I'm likely to see in my lifetime."
"I don't know what your application may be, but with five different lighting modes ... Fenix reliability ... the quality of the controls and the light ... I've got to believe ... this is your go-to tactical light."
I hope you find the review helpful. Thanks for your time! Subscribe here for new reviews and community updates: / @l5-sar

Thanks! I like the light so much, I'm probably going to purchase a second and retire my TK-22 UE. That will give me a TK -16 V2 on both left and right shoulder of my ruck.

Does the flashlight ever go-off accidentally, when the tail switch is unintentionally pressed? Or do you find that doesn't really happen? Just wondering since there is no lock-out feature with this light. Appreciate the in-depth review!
@L5-SAR
@L5-SAR 2 жыл бұрын
I've never had that happen. I have the light attached to the top right strap of my ruck, which is placed in the back of the truck and gets bounced around like any other piece of gear on my way in territory. I found the tail switch required a bit more pressure to activate than I was used to with other vendors - NiteCore for example. But, I suppose that it could happen. If I were to transport it long distances while packed away, I'd likely transport it either without the battery or with the cap unscrewed just enough to prohibit a connection.

@@L5-SAR OK that's good to hear it doesn't accidentally turn on. I had a Fenix UC30 that would constantly turn on unintentionally via it's one-button all-function side switch. Sometimes the battery would be almost drained by the time I noticed it was on. Good tip about the cap unscrew. Thanks for the reply!

Awesome review, How’s the light holding up to date 2022? Has the heat issues finally gotten to it some people have complained about it. I just ordered one anyways because of your review
@L5-SAR
@L5-SAR 2 жыл бұрын
I have not experienced any issues with heat. It's still mounted on the left shoulder of my ruck. Now, when in Turbo mode, I use it in bursts of no more than a minute at a time. I have used it once in a lower mode for nearly an hour. No heat problems. Hope that helps.

@@L5-SAR yeah great tips! I’m not worried anyways about the light overheating on turbo which I’ll consider only for burst shots. 1 min in plenty fine. I’ve had a few lights myself. I worked security for a few years and used the Klarus XT11 600 Lumen version and it kept that brightness 2hrs claimed. Real world and using an 18650 3600mah battery it started to step down at 1hr 30min marker. Anyways I’ll be happy with the 1K lumen output and the APF technology because I think after about 3 years that’s where the failure of my klarus finally came from. It just stopped working as the light burned out but it was probably the switch. The fenix tk16 v2 so I’ve read about has the newest propriety technology sending a signal from the tail switch to the circuit board of the light. But anyways great review and I’ll be looking out for the next 1 👀😎🤙🏼💯 Oh and be safe out there ! 🙏

@@aquasound-escapes898 Thanks. I did a stint in executive protection. I think the switch will end up being the weak link for me as I hit that switch over and over and over and over for months and months during training season. There is a good aftermarket for Fenix parts though and I've already ordered a backup tailcap 'just in case'. No problems so far, though and this is my second season using the light. And yes, I'm always worried about safety. When it's cold enough, I'm the only creature outdoors in 40K acres on two legs. If I lose it out there, no one is coming for me. Next review, btw is part 1 of a 3-part review of the Fenix HP 30R v2 headlamp :)

@@L5-SAR roger that. It’s too bad you don’t have a companion. Can you get paid for SARS work? These new LED lights make it much easier I bet. I think fenix waited the longest before jumping on the 2,3,4K lumen power train before coming out with a light and having the right technology, R&D (APF switch tech) to make sure their lights would last long enough (at least the life of the tail switch) 200,000 clicks. But that’s awesome you know how to track… a very important skill should you ever need it. I’m thinking about training to become a PI. And then if I have skills as a tracker, that would complete much of my investigatory skill set in finding a loved 1.

@@aquasound-escapes898 I can get paid for night operations provided I'm working at the request of the family of the person(s) needing assistance or for a company wishing recovery of assets (from say, a plane crash). I truly hope the Fenix switch outlives me, but the one thing I learned from my instructor (non-active duty Force Recon) is that all mechanical devices are subject to failure. So, I expect everything to fail when I'm out in the bush and have backups prepared. I carry three headlamps (one of which I may need to give to a person in need of light), at least two (most often three) flashlights. I also have small clip-on backup lights on my headlamp straps on my bump helmet that can be immediately activated in the event of a main headlamp failure (or hot-swapping batteries in the field). Thanks for the conversation!

Hello sir which one you recommend between tk16v2 and nitecore p23 i?
@L5-SAR
@L5-SAR Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your question. That's two lights separated quite some time in terms of the technology curve. As a free light for wilderness Search and Rescue, I'd now gravitate towards the P23i, but it probably means using a separate light for tracking as the P23i is a bit too high candela at the low end. Off to strobe and one press to Turbo are nice features of the UI. See the wilderness SAR video of the P23i on the channel to see for yourself and decide for yourself. Good luck!

I don't own the P20iX, but at 4000 LM, it seems like it's worth a serious look. Historically, I've had heat problems with NiteCore flashlights, but there is really just one way to find out. Put the P20iX on my left shoulder and the TK 16V2 on the right shoulder (where it's currently mounted). Let the battle begin! I'll be back out at the LBJ Grasslands probably first or second week in Oct depending on how my Ragweed allergy goes this season :)
