Cake Smash Photoshoot - Behind the Scenes

In this video I'm photographing a beautiful one year old girl during a cake smash photoshoot in my photo studio. We started with some portrait pictures and afterwards she got to eat a giant cupcake. Afterwards we blew some bubbles in an antique bath tub. My husband was in the studio as well to record professional behind the scenes footage.
I'm a full-time photographer in the Netherlands and I'm planning on showing you a but more of my life as a photographer. Are you interested in photography? I'm planning on sharing videos in which I show you my typical work-week as a photographer. I will give you tips & tricks concerning photography, photo shoots, backdrops, studio props, camera settings (iso, aperture, shutter speed, white balance), photoshoot outfits, photoshoot make-up etc.

IMPORTANT
If you are interested in photographing newborn babies yourself I would highly recommend you to first learn about photography in general. Master you camera, photograph in the Manual mode, learn about aperture, iso, shutter speed, white balance, light and composition. Take photos of your friends (adults or very patient older kids) and make sure you don't have to think about your camera anymore when photographing babies. Learn about editing as well. Please, don't experiment photographing Newborn babies without training. Attend a workshop by an experienced and professional photographer with an expertise in Newborn Photography. Learn about the anatomy of babies and invest in good quality cameras, lenses and props. Babies are extremely vulnerable and small and their safety and comfort should be your highest priority. Start with simple poses and make sure you know and understand that many 'pinterest poses' are composites. Please, don't try this at home. If you want beautiful photos of your own Newborn Baby, I highly recommend you to hire a professional and experienced photographer who is trained and specialised in Newborn Photography.

Hey Fenna! Love your videos... you inspired me to start experimenting with studio photography. What lenses do you use for these shoots. I own a canon with crop sensor and I love the looks of portraits in studio using my 50mm, but when I want full body shots or two siblings for example I don’t know what to use (my studio doesn’t have a lot of space). I’ve tried wider lenses but I hate the distortion of it. Any advice on this please? Thanks a lot! Keep on the amazing work! Kisses from Portugal!

Love your videos. I'm surprised you still just use a Nikon flash in the soft box instead of buying a dedicated studio strobe? If you are worried about power cords I use the Godox AD200's, battery operated and very fast recycle.

I never throw away my background after a cake smash. I don't use paper, but vinyl. It's very easy to clean with baby wipes/water soap etc!

Hey, congratulations, beautiful pictures. I just wonder from.your camera settings, why 640ISO, isn't that too high?

Thank you! On a crop camera using ISO640 might cause the darker areas of your image to appear grainy. However, on my full-frame camera the pictures are still sharp and crisp with an ISO of 640. I can go to ISO 1000 without any problems as long as my image is well exposed. I don't have to brighten my image when I retouch. It really depends on the sensor of your camera and how well you image is exposed. I could go lower by decreasing my shutter speed or shooting with a bigger aperture. However, I don't want movement in my pictures and with a cake smash the parents want the girl and the cake to be in focus. I could also increase my speed lights, but I don't want to bother the kids with a stronger flash. Now it really doesn't bother them at all and I love the combination of studio light and natural light.
