As a side note to my other comment, I just have to say how beautiful it is that the husband doesn't try to speak for the wife. Maybe it's just me who has spent time among ESL people. But I noticed that even while she's searching for a word, he gives her the space and time to say what it is she needs to say. They are a lovely couple. I'm glad that they have each other.

The “Insurance” industry inserted in between doctors and patients and regulating EVERYTHING they could treat and prescribe and how much they could charge and taking their cut of profits from doctors and patients caused animosity and turned doctors against patients! When Insurance company CEOs and executives take home 30 million dollar salaries and some doctors work two jobs to survive, SOMETHING IS WRONG!

Yeah it so sad to watch. In Australia we have universal public health care which is free and awesome. We also have private health insurance, for a small fee each week you can get private care and more options. Also we don’t have to fight our insurance companies for any care we need. I had to upgrade my cover a day before a 4 week mental health stay at a beautiful private clinic. I did it the day before I went to the clinic and got covered. We also have this thing called the national disability scheme where all care and therapies is covered by the government free of charge. Families are able to pick private providers of their choice for their love one with money they receive.

These parents need to be given a larger platform. This is a GREAT start but my goodness lets gets these parents in front of any and every form of mass media possible . I would love to see this lead to a massive expose into the underhanded wheeling and dealing going on between hospitals, doctors, insurance companies , and big pharma. BRAVO to these 2 for not letting their sons tragic and preventable death not be in vain. Nobody would ever blame these for completely giving in to their grief if they chose to do so. Nobody would ever blame them for a minute . But they aren’t! I can’t even imagine the strength that takes! This moved me to tears and I don’t even have children. I truly believe you have what it takes to move mountains. It takes a certain type of person to facilitate real change . The two of You are 100% that type of person. I am deeply sorry to hear about the loss of Jeffrey. It is evident that he was fortunate to have such caring and dedicated parents who fought tirelessly for his life. It is disheartening to witness the manner in which insurance companies and hospitals treat individuals nowadays, prioritizing financial gain over human well-being. I sincerely hope that you pursue legal action against all those responsible for this unfortunate situation. I appreciate your willingness to share your story and raise awareness about these critical issues. Fentanyl has become a devastating force, claiming countless precious lives. Last year, I experienced the profound loss of my best friend due to a Fentanyl overdose. This insidious drug knows no boundaries and affects individuals indiscriminately. May you continue to find the strength to persevere in your fight for justice. Once again, I express my deepest condolences for the loss of Jeffrey. It’s frustrating because as experienced nurses, we know a lot but aren’t listened to. It looks like Jeffrey had a subclavian line. You don’t leave a facility with that if you’re stable. You get a picc line. And you don’t feed people with an ileus. If he’s not pooping, the food isn’t going anywhere. Puts people at risk for aspiration pneumonia. Sounds like he needed cultures and ICU resuscitation. And I don’t even know half of what is going on. Ughhhh. This is sad.
@NurseLisa_1
@NurseLisa_1 2 ай бұрын
Let me educate you just a bit & hopefully this makes sense to you. According to the mom, Jeffrey had a port placed in his chest. Stable patients leave the hospital with them literally all the time. They're meant for people who have or are expected to have multiple IV cannulations. I'm sure scar tissue became a problem & hospital staff had increasing difficulty obtaining IV access on Jeffrey with each lab draw & hospitalization so the port was actually a great alternative because it can be accessed & de-accessed very easily. Did Jeffrey eat by mouth or was he fed in the form of tube feeding or TPN? If so, that eliminates the risk of aspiration pneumonia. I'm 100% sure the hospital did do cultures on Jeffrey before starting any of the antibiotics & to aid them in the diagnosis of sepsis (along with labs & vital signs). If cultures weren't obtained they would not have known what bacteria Jeffrey was harboring & what antibiotics the bacteria was susceptible to. All hospitals have a sepsis protocol that includes fluid resuscitation so I'm sure he was receiving the proper amount of fluids based on his weight & condition. I've never heard of nor seen a hospital allow a patient with an ileus any type of PO intake until after the ileus is resolved (via a NG tube to low intermittent suction. IV fluids, medication changes, etc.). Even sepsis itself can be a precipitating factor & cause an ileus. I can't imagine this mothers grief & I fully understand that during the grieving process we look for answers & our hearts & minds need to place blame on people, places, or things in an attempt to find reason, but I'm sure the hospital & all those people who cared for Jeffrey truly did have his best interest at heart & most certainly did not do anything to hinder his progress, neglect him, or cause any unnecessary harm to him, including & up to death.

The medical system in the U.S. is BROKEN...beyond repair. It's ALL about the money and it seems that many "medical people" JUST DON"T CARE anymore. They work their shifts and don't show much empathy. As the Bible says...in the end times, the love of most will grow cold. This is what I am finding in my own healthcare journey(as a senior citizen). I have a strong medical background and I have to CONSTANTLY be my OWN healthcare advocate. I'm weary. I'm so sorry about what happened to Jeffrey and I admire the way you are speaking out.

These parents have done a phenomenal job of fighting for him and advocating for him every step of the way. It takes a long time and a lot of effort to learn medical terminology and pathophysiology, but Had a very solid understanding of a lot of it. it is terrible that they were not given all of the information that they felt like they needed. it is extremely problematic for a doctor or any other healthcare provider to pick and choose what they tell a family, especially one like this, who wants to know every detail with updates and explanations. Yes this is a lot of work and staff is already overwhelmed but it’s just not fair

Thank you for words and insight. I pray you work in the medical field. Looks like it. I do understand what you say, because hospitals are short of staff and sadly 35% (in my experience) of nurses are NOT GOOD and in many case RUDE - specially the ones from agencies - at UTMB Galveston was a NIGHTMARE. One nurse (from an agency) denied to feed Jeffrey. Another one in a different day never came when I called 3 times telling her that Jeffrey was getting fever and was riding up fast. At the end the charge manager came Jeffrey BUTNING UP! … In these two last case were not because they were busy, was because they didn’t care and were LAZY.

@@JESSICAVARIAN I believe you. I have seen some behavior from every level from nurses, NP, PA, doctors that I never would have believed possible. I am terribly sorry for what you both suffered through, especially and most of all Jeffrey. I am an ICU nurse of 15 years. When I was trained, there were very high standards to be in this profession. Right now, I do not hesitate to tell everyone to do their best to stay out of the hospital. It is not a place anyone wants to be. I personally feel it is not safe for many reasons. Just my opinion- I feel that when nurses became “Travel Nurses” during Covid and made up to 6k-8k each week, nursing became a *transaction* True caring about sick human beings, compassion, personal responsibility, and ethics were no longer a priority. That money also attracted undesirable people into this field who are only in it because of the money. Prior to those big money contracts, Nurses were paid fairly the same across-the-board, depending on your state and city, and you wanted to find a job and stay there. Nursing is not meant to be a job that you “grind and hustle” to make money off of. RN’s that hustle for overtime $ or a second job show up exhausted and do the bare minimum. it’s pure greed because Nursing pays fairly well. These types of nurses are everywhere. Doing this for money changes your entire intention and purpose of being there. I am really struggling. Every day is a fight- to get a doctor to speak to a family, to bring attention to a problem that a patient is having that is not life threatening, but yet extremely important, to get answers for patients when they have questions and need information that is within their right to have, restarting home medication that is important to the patient, when they specifically asked to start the medication from home, but you can’t find a doctor prescribe it at the hospital, to prevent medical errors that can happen because of a lack of communication between different specialists, stepping in and speaking up when I hear a doctor speaking to someone in a way that is unprofessional or not giving them all of the medical information that they need to truly understand what’s going on…The list can Go on and on. Being an advocate and speaking publicly about the problems in the healthcare system and at the hospitals is the best way that we can prevent more people from suffering

The problem with getting this type of specialty- neuro physiatrist, at a hospital comes down to payment. This is a very expensive service level that could potentially be required for a persons lifetime. Some may be able to pay privately for it, but many will be unable to pay the bill. Your advocacy and determination to educate the public about all of these issues is critical. The curtain needs to be pulled back to expose what is happening in healthcare today.

These are life's of people that are dying every day of overdose even innocent people that are working to stop the corruption came in counter with and lose their life. No one deserves poor quality of health care. you work and pay for health care and your insurance is always giving the run around they are a industry that makes a lot of money along with pharmaceutical. We have all been in some kind of situation with our love one. God doesn't want any one to be mistreated. In general no one deserves this kind of treatment. Please think about. May God bless you and your love ones. May every day you think of your life and families life with respect because im sure if this would be your child's life, you would want the best health care ever. You would do everything to ask questions and understand what is going on with their health. Every life matters. Go in peace seek Jesus Christ as your savior. Once again blessings and God bless America 🇺🇸

I learned this after 4 hospitalizations of my husband...they don't have pitchers of water at the bedside anymore. Just cups of water (at least at the hospital in my area.) And sometimes the cup wasn't even there. And, the staff doesn't come by to check on the patient except to do vital signs. And morning care is almost non-existant. On admission, the patient is provident a little tub, emesis basin, toothbrush and a comb. None of these were even touched when my husband checked out. Sad. When my husband got home, he needed a bath. These things have nothing to do with an insurance company. No experience with brain injuries? They care for stroke patients for sure. As far as one step forward, two steps back, I can totally relate.

Interesting Mrs Jessica…when you started talking about his condition reversal…holding his head up …muscle weakness. You could see Jeffrey had dark circles under his eyes. Weight loss. Same thing happened to my grandmother with her trachea. it was not being kept sanitary. My mother took her home and made sure her trachea was kept clean. She was able to have it removed and improved. Poor sweetheart. Stable? Unbelievable…he should have been in ICU. Doctors don’t fight for patients anymore. None. This is happening…apparently hospitals are being run by corporations not doctors anymore. It’s like pulling teeth to see a specialist even if you don’t need a referral by your insurance. The medical facilities want the referral. Even then the medical facilities deny you. Something is seriously wrong with the medical system. God bless and be with you both.

So are providers and professionals. You immediately blame the insurance company in an attempt to try to deflect from the providers. That is what we call a trained strategy to try to protect providers. Providers abuse everyday and obviously it happened in this case. Nevermind the amount of fraud in your profession. Billing for appointments that never happen. Billing for one hour after only 15 mins of "care." Let's not manipulate here and focus just on the insurance company. They all failed this family.

What you are going through I have also been through with my daughter. She was discharged with a feeding tube and breathing machine. The hospital said she was stable and no longer required hospital care. WHAT! Well….the hospital discharged her after I fought and fought the administration. Fortunately in my case I had spent 4 months with her in the hospital. My husband told me I was not leaving the hospital. He said that I needed to advocate for her, and so I did. I did not go home for the entire 4 months. During that time i taught myself how to clean her breathing tube and her feeding tube by just watching. It is terrible what these hospitals are getting away with. It’s all about the money.

You are wonderful advocates. You helped your son to get better in spite of all odds and you will help many others by telling your story. As long as health care is a profit making enterprise, nothing will change. Even the non profits exist to enrich the C suites. Universal healthcare is our best hope for getting everyone the care they need and deserve. Also: every local TV station every single day should start their broadcast by reporting how many people died from fentanyl that day, in that community, in that state, in this country. It is an epidemic and with a grandson at risk I worry constantly. I learned a lot from this video, thank you so much.

For the issues in the hospital with the nursing staff, you can be frustrated but losing your cool will never be in your favor. Most hospitals have code of conduct for visitors and yelling at the nurses station to is definitely against it even if you feel your voice is not being heard. It’s a working relationship between medical staff and patient/family so keeping it calm helps communication move more freely. I’m sorry you felt like your son wasn’t being cared for properly :(

I'm so sorry for your loss. I learned about Jeffrey a few months ago and later learned of his passing and I also recently found your book about your other son Jorge. Just know I admire your enormous faith after all you have been through. I am a young doctor myself and after working in Neurosurgery for almost half a year, one thing that angers and disappoints me is how easily medical personnel give up on patients with brain damage. All you did for your son will be rewarded both in this life and the next.

This mother is amazing. What she is telling is very interesting. All of us have to pay attention to her. This is what insurance companies and hospitals need to hear. We care about our loved ones. Michael Jackson has a song called: All I want to say is that they don't really care about us.
