Very true words! I feel very happy that I've been able to make a difference in the lives of several stray cats, all have passed away except for one that I'm still caring for. The ones that passed had love and care during the last years of their lives, and I'm so glad I was able to give them that. 🐱💖

Tonight I tried... at the end the road when I was coming home, was one of my local foxes that had been hit by a car. Poor thing was thrashing about and yelping in the middle of a busy road. A lady driving by stopped contacted a local emegancy vet, and I managed to pick it up and wrap it in a blanket (while dodging traffic) and load it into the boot of the car... luckily had leather gloves on as I got bit a few times. Got to the local vet, but he died shortly after. I've had a few success stories, but sadly more that end like this. It's all just a matter of timing. If one of the cars before me had done this he might have been ok, I don't know how long he'd been there... I hate dealing with stuff like this, but comes from when my dad and a 12 year old me walked into a lake and saved a swan that some kids had stupidly got caught in their fishing line, after it took their bait...we saw them run off when it happened. taking a hook out of a swans beak is not fun!

Animals can teach us a lot. I was feeding feral cats with my husband everyday in our neighbourhood, there was particularly one that was extremely wild. We were always trying to take time with her, giving her food, sitting near her,... She started trying to interact with us despite being terrified of cuddles. Long story short, I went to see my parents abroad and got stuck there because of the pandemic. My husband was alone and kept feeding all our little friends by himself, even being depressed. This wild girl noticed he was in pain and actually went to visit him everyday, saying hello at morning in front of our door, welcoming back home, even asked to come in. At night she was just sitting in front of the bed, checking on him while he was sleeping. Never asked for additional food or anything special. She kept my husband okay the whole time I was away. Needless to say, I came back with a bag full of toys and treats. Cats are brilliant.

@@bocaraca3814 It certainly doesn't make the situation worse! Ignoring them would! Not all strays can be rehomed easily for several reasons, not least because they might not want to. A lack of adopters is also a problem: usually people go after kittens. Some shelters in the US resort to killing the ones they can't rehome: at this point, better well fed in the streets. Possibly neutered. Bless this lady and her husband for taking care of them

But once they crossed a certain line, they became total lap cats ❤ The situation was unique in that they started hanging out in my yard, so I was able to put the time in. This often isn't the case ... I will say that both of those cats touched my heart in very special ways ❤ ♥

@kalla6674

It takes patience but most adult ferals can be socialized and become loving house or indoor/outdoor cats. Some will be shyer and not like being picked up or handled but still love pets, but plenty of houseborn cats are like that too. They have the same domestic genes as housecats, just some have been supressed for the sake of survival. Feral is a learned behavior, domestic is the default. No feral cat is truly happy living outside, they may enjoy some aspects as do housecats, but they certainly don't like the cold, the predators, the difficulty in finding food, the cars, ect. That said there will always be cats that are different and don't want human attention no matter what. I had a litter of kittens from 2 weeks old bottle fed, all sweet and lovely adopted out except one, this one orange tabby female. Up until around 3 months old she was friendly but very needy, wanted to be with me all the time, but then very suddenly something changed, I think she had something wrong in her brain like people get personality disorders. She began acting like a feral cat and wanted no attention from me at all, eventually she went to live outside on a friend's farm and still comes to eat but wants nothing to do with humans.

I can relate so much to this story. I took in a feral ginger tom after my poor old cat had to be put down. I said never again after her but as any cat lover will tell you, when they are gone they leave a massive hole, so I went to my local shelter and instantly connected this stunning ginger boy. The shelter said I'd never be able to handle him and that they haven't ever seen him play but I can assure you with a little bit of time, he plays and loves to be stroked and have his hair brushed. At times he'll scratch but its never violent, its like he was taken away from his mum far to early and never learnt how not to play rough.

The damage to his eye and teeth is heartbreaking. He looks so much like my own cats who almost had a similar destiny, they were listed as feral kittens and by the time I got them they were debating between putting them down or returning them to the feral colony. That would’ve been so terrible considering how friendly one is and the other is so afraid of his own shadow.

@@annaleview5235 Aw that’s so sweet. I think sometimes if the animals aren’t immediately friendly they get labeled feral. My boys never once appeared aggressive, they were just terrified. They had shut down and were curled up together. The tiniest amount of affection plus a bag of temptations opened them right up. Also, I love your name!

Feral cats are the best because they pick you.. you can't force them to be there, to love you or show you affection, it's most definitely earned 💕❤️🐈🐾 Thank You for your years of service, just know there's more of us out there 🥰🤗

My late grandmother was the neighborhood cat lady. People hated her for it. But she was a holocaust survivor. She was in auschwitz at 15 and lost most of her family. She told me she would feed the cats because she knew what it was like to be starving and cold and she couldn't stand to see the cats suffer the same as she did

This past winter I took in an elderly, male, battle- scarred cat. After the rocky initiation period, Mr. Whiskers settled down and became a LOVE BUG! People in the neighborhood who knew him as a stray couldn't believe it. He gained weight and his matted fur is now shiny and plush. (Amazing what good, clean food and a warm place to sleep and de-stress can do)! I let him into the house this winter and he acted as a kitten. Rolling around on the floor and showing his belly and purring non-stop. MR.Whiskers the skinny, scraggly, 14 yr old(?) stray cat has found the home he had been seeking all his life! He is an Indoor/outdoor cat. The only negative is he thinks he is "number 1" and the 2 younger, neutered males are intimidated by him! But, it is a work in progress.

Thank you for sharing. For the rest of you out there looking at this video from the comfort of your own home, please support them financially through donations or through contributions of cat/dog food. These rescuers spend their valuable time and resources to make these resources possible. I should know as I used to do rescue work myself and it can be physically and emotionally draining. You should not be surprised how many people out there are hostile to rescue work and to rescue workers (& to animals). Ravi Peiris M.D.
