At Packsaddle north of Broken Hill, Joe Baty and his family are chasing feral donkeys on motorbikes.
The often unpredictable ass can be a handful even for Mr Baty, who has grown up handling wild animals.
"Donkeys just keep trying you and trying you," he said.
"They're definitely the hardest thing to muster that I've mustered - I'd be pretty sure about that."
Mr Baty, who lives at Muella Station north-west of Bourke, makes most of his money from goats.
On the side he sells donkeys as guardian animals to protect livestock mainly from wild dogs.
"Donkeys are very vicious animals," he said.
"Even though they look dopey and sleepy, when the time is right they are a powerhouse."

I've loved donkeys since I was a kid. I've always heard they are the best guard animals for livestock. I'm glad they are being put to use rather than being culled.

As a guard against wild dogs you couldn't do much better than a donkey, they hate dogs. I've had donkeys and my dog learnt very quickly not to go in the paddock.

They are concerned about the stress and suffering, and sure a lengthy capture and transport process means more stress and thus suffering, but animals don't just want to avoid suffering, they want to live. I'm sure if you asked the donkeys, they'd prefer capture to death. I'm all for shooting and culling invasive species, but if people want them and don't release them again, even better. Just get them off the land.

I live on a side road about 40 miles out of Kingston, Ontario - it's farm country and forests and animals, including a pack of coyotes, some coywolves, a resident bobcat and a few other predators. Everyone I know out here who has any livestock or poultry also has one or two donkeys on their land and it's very rare to hear of anyone ever losing an animal or a bird. Donkeys take their work very seriously...

BINGO! Exactly right. What makes it SUCH a win-win-win is A) LOTS livestock will be saved; B) Slews of donkeys would have been tragically culled/killed if not rounded up; C) man and his family manage it and have turned it into a business. BRILLIANT! I tell ya this, the donkey is THE most versatile/useful animal there is (even over a dog), and while historically they've spent their lives around ppl, they are also EXTREMELY formidable animals. I'm guessing these Aussies know dingos would be wise to stay away from a donkey, because donkeys are VERY smart, and they know they can weaponize those lethal rear kicks. One solid shot to a dingo's head and it's lights out for the dingo. Horses will generally flee from conflict, whereas a donkey stands its ground and will fight.

In Hawaii we had the same type of donkeys with the band of darker color over the shoulder. They were originally brought in to haul sugar cane and then survived feral in the driest area in all of Oceania. They started to encroach on a town so a local vet arranged to have them rounded up and given to farmers and gentleman farmers. I sometimes fed a pair of them who ate back invasive bamboo. They can have funny personalities and noisily demanding for their supplemental food! The same vet has a horse from the Secretariat line. That horse was paired with one of the local wild horses in an agricultural Valley. The owner affectionately calls the offspring his taro bred. Taro is used to make poi a Hawaii staple food.

I've watched donkeys rip packs of dogs to pieces. 5 dogs don't stand a chance against a group of donkeys. They're pretty fucking metal. I live in wyoming where there are wolves and ranchers use Donkeys and mules to protect their horses and cattle from wolves and coyotes. I've heard of mules killing mountain lions, of course the mule was mortally wounded, but he did his job and protected the herd. Once animals like horses, donkeys, and mules figure out how to kill dogs, they start doing it for fun. I'm working right now with a horse who's favorite hobby is killing dogs. He's killed two strays and 3 of his owners own dogs. He started with it when he kept getting attacked and he just never stopped. Even the wolves here in Wy leave even the domestic horses alone, it's much easier to kill a cow or a sheep. They won't fight back.
