Ferdinando Carulli - Concerto for guitar & orchestra in E Minor, Op. 140 (Petit Concerto de Société), Pepe Romero, guitar, Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, Iona Brown
I. Allegro 0:00
II. Largo + III Allegro (without break) 7:11 - - 10:15
Ferdinando Maria Meinrado Francesco Pascale Rosario Carulli (9 February 1770 - 17 February 1841) was an Italian composer for classical guitar and the author of the influential Méthode complète pour guitare ou lyre, op. 27 (1810), which contains music still used by student guitarists today. He wrote a variety of works for classical guitar, including numerous solo and chamber works and several concertos. He was an extremely prolific writer, composing over 400 works for the instrument.
Although not very well-known today, Ferdinando Carulli belonged, in his heyday, to the leading guitarists, to be named in one breath together with Mauro Giuliani, Anton Diabelli or Johann Kaspar Mertz. He was born in Naples, Italy, but moved as a young man to Paris, where he celebrated many a triumph as a saloon musician.

It seems to me that, generally speaking, there are not as many guitar concertos as there are violin concertos or cello concertos. So when I hear this guitar come in I’m a little surprised…this is an exquisite, unique piece of music and I love it! It plays with a fervor and strong melodic line not really heard in the rest of his compositions. This is the one he shines in.

Purtroppo quasi dimenticato in Italia.Andrebbe riscoperto ed eseguito. Ha scritto tantissima musica.

Thanks. You're right, Carulli was a great composer, but today, unfortunately, too few people know his music.

Maravilloso concierto!!

Ferdinando Maria Meinrado Francesco Pascale Rosario Carulli 1770 - 1841 ... was taught musical theory by a priest, who was also an amateur musician. Carulli's first instrument was the cello, when he was twenty he discovered the guitar ... As there were no professional guitar teachers in Naples at the time, Carulli developed his own style of playing ... WIKI

Perhaps some of the sound has been lost in the quality of the recording, however, from what can be heard in this recording a few things are missing. Unfortunately, the orchestra doesn’t accompany the guitar well, often landing on the offbeat. More dynamic contrast can be expected from the guitar. Some parts are missing the energy that is required by the harmony. In sections with many notes, the melodic line can be highlighted more clearly. Often, imagining the music being sung, and with different characters as if in an opera, can help with the interpretation. Therefore the process in learning a piece like this should not be rushed, otherwise details like these can be missed.
