It is based on that actually, Farokhzad confirms it himself elsewhere. Apparently, when Fiddler on the roof was on screen in Iranian Cinemas back in the day, the audience used to sing along, by replacing the original lyrics with this version.

چند وقت پیش ٫ در یوتیوب یک کلیپی دیدم که در سال ۵۸ فیلمبرداری و ضبط شده بود . در آن کلیپ جمعی از مردم بدور یکنفر نشسته بودند و آن یک نفر ( حدس می زنم ٫ ۲۳ یا ۲۴ ساله ) ادای زنده نام فریدون فرخزاد رو در می آورد و مردم هم میخندیدند . اابته حیف از واژهٔ (مرد) م ٫ برای آن و در حال حاضر این (نامرد) مان . شکل و ظاهر لباس آن ........ها کاملاً مشخص بود که مال یکی از طو........های سیستان و بلوچستان بودند . حیف حیف و صد حیف از تو مرد بزرگ .
