Welcome to science at home in this experiment we are exploring the fermentation between yeast and sugar. Yeast uses sugar as energy and releases carbon dioxide and ethanol as waste. Yeast and fermentation have been used for thousands of years when making bread. At the end of this episode you will be able to demonstrate fermentation, explain why yeast and fermentation make a balloon grow and explain the chemical reaction that occurs during fermentation.

Yep, that is what some chemists do. They say you need goggles, but never wear them. I always wear goggles, and gloves, even for supposedly harmless materials during labs.

I have been fermenting 2 cups of sugar with one package of dried yeast in a half gallon of water for two weeks and refrigerating the product to settle the yeast for a week. I mix it with Bloody Mary or whiskey sour mix and I have a pretty nice drink. Actually, I drink it straight sometimes. I am 90 years old and it has not killed me yet!

lol so actually I did this experiment recently and came out smelling like beer after I discovered a hole in the balloon and got sprayed with the byproducts. Now I'm not saying a lab coat would've necessarily helped, but it would've definitely made me feel like a bonafide scientist (which is really cool in my book).

Great video Sci Guys, thankyou. You probably meant glucose or fructose as C6H12O6. Not sucrose, which is a disaccharide and would be different.

Ok I've done this prac twice and both times ended up with the balloon with least sugar being the largest. Everything was as you gys did but we only left it for 20 minutes. Is this the reason behind our failures?

+DiLLZGFX Yes, there is a reflex that causes your eyes to blink when too much light enters them, to prevent damage. That's why it's so hard to look at the sun, because you have to constantly fight to keep your eyes open, not that anyone should be doing that.

hi there. Can u please explain why One of my homemade bottled wine exploded? I am making a bignay wine a fruit that can be found here in the philippines, and placed it in a used bottle (ALFONSO) after adding sugar and yeast at 6:00 pm, the bottle exploded at around 3 in the morning. What might be the cause?

Does it matter what type of yeast I have? I don't have instant yeast, rather I have "active dry" yeast in a ziplock I got from my Mom. Not sure the difference, and how it relates to doing this experiment.

hello, so i notice that the balloon on the bottle with no sugar had some gas filling it. you can see between it differ on 1:54 and 2:04. can you pls explain whats happening? isnt it supposed to be no CO2 production due to no sugar?

Hello, does the balloon with the most sugar inflate for a longer time? Why does it inflate faster? Shouldn't it consume the same amount of food as the other yeast fungus? Thank you! Really good video!

When washed water left over from washing uncooked rice, added with Yeast, left it for 10 days inside an airtight bottle, gives a very strong smell, what gas is that? And what by-products are produced when that solution is boiled?

May i ask => Sucrose is produced after fermentation and Sucrose is still a form of sugar. So, if consume too much will still cause diabetic, right? ...That for the case of Alcohol consumption.

No big deal, but the chemical formula in the video for sucrose is incorrect; the formula is actually for glucose. Sucrose is C12H22O11.

yeah, sucrose is glucose-O-fructose, the yeast create an enzyme that cleaves the Oxygen and then eat the glucose for food because it's easier to break down than fructose: simply put.

Why is it when making beer you have to leave the yeast in the barrel with an air lock for 2 weeks first... THEN add sucrose after 2 weeks? Thanks
