That Milan side had great players, but they get way too much credit. They won one league title and two Champions Leagues in the 2000’s yet people keep calling them the greatest team of all-time. They were not even as good as the Milan sides of the 80’s and early 90’s. I find that this is mostly due to everyone feeling nostalgic over their players. 2008-2011 Barca would absolutely wipe the floor with that 2000’s Milan side.

Not to disrespect all central players who were captain but I've seen captains like Gerrard, Totti, etc who were good but their greatness sort of came at the expense of the rest of the team as all passes had to go through them taking away from the team's potential creativity. Hamann easily had the best penalty conversion ratio at Liverpool yet Gerrard took the penalties to satisfy his ego. Same could be said about both Ronaldo and Messi who are brilliant players (possibly the best ever) but every other player has to take a back seat when playing with them. Ronaldo's penalty conversion rate was not even among the top 5 in Real Madrid but he was obbsessed with his goal tally that he still took penalties (thus the nickname "Penaldo" was coined). What makes Lahm so incredible to me though is how diligent he was in letting others lead when required. That German team seemed to have a different on-field leader each game in a way that there was no egos in the team. Despite being possibly the best right back of all time and an incredible player Lahm never carried himself as someone who was better than anyone else on the team or a bigger star. I probably didn't appreaciate him enough when I was younger but as I've gotten older I've seen so many egotistical players that want to be captain for all the wrong reasons and I've looked at Germany with severe jealousy sometimes wishing I was playing among a team like that with a captain like Lahm.
