It's been a while since I published a piece! This was the first in my all-Spanish program for my first DMA rectial at USC. Sor originally wrote this piece in THREE clefs, and it was meant to showcase his abilities as an operatic composer for solo guitar, although he never received any success as such.
The piece begins with a lengthy, dramatic introduction (0:00), followed by an original theme and 7 variations (5:17), and a brief concluding finale. And thanks to Adam Borecki for the impeccable recording!

Thank You! I am very appreciative of the fact that I could listen to ALL of it, with very necessary repeats which not only added to my listening enjoyment, but honoured Sor's intention, which I relish for its enigmatic power in itself. A magical piece very well rendered.

According to the Wiki entry on Sor, "Op. 7 was a large and strange piece, notated in three clefs, and no guitarist at the time could play it." Aside from the use of three clefs, is there anything else particularly strange or difficult about this piece--it sounds pretty unstrange to my ears. Please elucidate if I'm missing something.

Funny you should bring that up! I actually wrote that wikipedia page about 10 years ago for a college project. That exercpt was from the biography by Brian Jeffery (Fernando Sor: Guitarist and Composer), and I'm as stumped as you; the piece does not seem strange to my ears. Perhaps it was just the way it was notated, or possibly it was uncommon for guitar pieces of the time. A lengthy introduction, theme and variations, and finale might have been common for other instruments, but guitar writing has always been about 50 years behind the rest of the musical world. It is, however, very difficult to play. Something you will really only know when you are working on it.
