Michael Mann's 2023 biopic covering one very important year in the life of Enzo Ferrari and the famous Modena specialist sports car factory and racing team that bore his name. Featuring Adam Driver in the titular role with Penelope Cruz as his wife, the pair must navigate a path between insolvency and survival as they bank it all on the entry to the infamous, notorious 1957 Mille Miglia. The crash that ended that 1000 mile race across Italy on open roads is show explicitly so be warned, this is probably not for the fainthearted.
One detail that others may notice is that there is a bug in the menu on this 4K disc. Returning to the menu via the 'pop-up menu' option can result in a lock-up of that menu and the only way to get it back is to eject the disc and start again or get to the end of the movie and wait for the menu to appear normally.
The image aspect ratio is approximately 2.40:1 and the sound is Dolby Atmos. The extra features run for a total of around 20 minutes and are also 2.40:1.

If you haven't watched Ford v. Ferrari for a while Dave how about doing the double bill. You'll find the first dialogue between Fiat and Ferrari is in the new film and we see how that ends in the older film. The older film is better but they're different. Be prepared for a bit of a drama and a history lesson and turn the sound up so you'll hopefully feel the cars rushing past camera like we did. John.

Sorry Pieter. I do hope you like Ferrari as much as I do though. If you're a bit of a petrol head like me and love all the chicanery behind the scenes in the specialist car industry around the world then I think you should enjoy it. It's a bit of a history lesson and features the first talk of a Fiat takeover which we see concluded in Le Mans '66. A good double bill next time we run it methinks. John.

I like 'Rush' too Rob. I thought this one was pretty terrific too though but it's more my sort of history lesson which is largely what I did for 17 years with TriumphDVD. Bear in mind that it's a bit more of a drama and a history lesson with the racing element always being around. I found that when it got to the Mille Miglia I felt I was involved and almost there. I suppose it helped that we could feel the cars rushing past camera in here so that could be an element of why wifey and I enjoyed it so much. But we are classic car owners and I love driving a classic sports car where you can feel everything, the steering is like brail and the engine talks to you as you squeeze the go pedal. I've reviewed the U.S. Blu-ray, the Italian 4K, and the U.K. disc that you have. It's the only one (that's easily obtainable, anyway) with both 4K and Dolby Atmos. The picture quality is significantly better in 4K than it is on the Blu-ray. Sharper, better detail, stronger contrast, and those Ferrari reds are more intense. The flat interiors that you're talking about were captured in relatively low light and the contrast is naturally more limited. That's how it looked in the theatres, too. So it's accurate to how the film was produced, even if it's not necessarily dazzling in those scenes.

Thank you Cabal. The only reason I mentioned the low light interior shots was because I was watching for this review but otherwise I'd have simply been enjoying the film and wouldn't have taken any notice of them. If you don't mention such things though some people get quite nasty about it. I didn't mention the bug on the menu whereby it locks up if accessing it via the pop-up menu option. I didn't bother working out the series of key presses that generates the lock-up but it is there. Probably an incompatibility with certain Panny players rather than everything but as I failed to remember it while blathering on I detailed it in the description to the video. John.

@moviecollector5920
@moviecollector5920 Ай бұрын
The fiddling to make things better (or not!) is part of the fun for me. I suppose you had to be a film collector to understand that though. Blu-ray is brilliant, no doubt about that. I underestimated it for a long time, probably because video projection wasn't always as good as it is now so we weren't getting the best out of them until we purchased our first 4K projector. But they are lying to us by putting up video imagery rather than film like imagery. Not always, but that's the usual difference even when a BD has been struck from the same master as a 4K disc. This is why the colours are unrealistic and the picture too bright. John.

Another comment just told me it wasn't yet released in the USA but yet another comment said that a steelbook was released in Europe last year so that indicates it's getting a bit of a staggered release around the world. Perhaps because it's largely about the Mille Miglia that's why it didn't do well in the USA. The same reason that the USA didn't get the 'Le Mans '66' title on that great film because the USA is a bit insular when it comes to motor sport. Sebring, Daytona and Indianapolis are the biggies in America whereas the rest of the world Le Mans is infamous and the Mille Miglia was too in its day. John.

@@moviecollector5920 I expect to enjoy the drama that goes with this story ... it was a fascinating time in the history of both motor sport and Ferrari. Back in the 90's I had a number of work related visits to the various Agusta sites in Italy. One of these was the original home of the Agusta motorcycle manufacture. It was interesting hearing about what it was like back in the day. When I visited it was just another set of Engineering Design offices ... but those working there were still familiar with the history associated. I also spent a lot of time at the original Jaguar factory site in Coventry (Swallow Road). But, whilst the history was still there, it lacked the "colour" that seems more associated with the Italian stories!!

Sky are being a little deceptive plastering Sky Original on the cover. The film was not commissioned or funded by them. Instead they bought the finished article for distribution in cinemas and on home release/Sky. Michael Mann has been trying to get this film made since the early 2000's, and always intended it as a principally cinema release rather than say for streaming. Sadly the lack of audience engagement with cinemas since the Pandemic, probably led to it getting less screenings, than if Mann had been able to make it 20 years ago.
@moviecollector5920
@moviecollector5920 Ай бұрын
There was still a pretty good cinema audience 20 years ago but the terminal decline had set in by then owing to the declining standards in cinemas. I think back to that period now and cinema was brilliant compared to today but to be fair, there just aren't enough patrons to justify any expenditure now... unless it's a special cinema such as the BFI IMAX. Sky shouldn't have put their name on this one by the sound of it David. I never did like the buggers! John.
@davidjames579
@davidjames579 Ай бұрын
@@moviecollector5920 There are a number of factors why cinema audiences are not what they used to be, across the board. Cinema ticket prices esp if you're taking a family are one of them. Although Vue are great value for money. And smaller differences between a good home movie system and a cinema's. Along with the time you gain back, ability to pause if you want to go the toilet/get a snack, and not having to put up with disruptive patrons. Really cinemas have become more about the in Martin Scorsese's words "Theme Park Ride" movies. I don't mean that disrespectfully as I believe these kind of films fulfill that brief, esp combined with 4DX (moving seats, scents etc). But that has to be the reason to go. Outside of Film Club settings like The Prince Charles with their retrospective screenings (often on film) and friendly, enthusiastic audience, there isn't really a place in cinemas for the traditional Mid-Budget Adult Drama like Ferrari. Back in the day these kind of films were Blockbusters in their own right, even if R rated/15/18 Cert. While the days of something like The Godfather being the highest grossing film of all time are long gone, Joker (2019) did show an interesting case where a hard drama about a beaten down society and it's effects on a mentally ill person could make over a Billion Dollars, as long as it was encased in a famous DC comic book character. A fact the director/writer himself acknowledged. It was the only way he could get his script greenlit. I agree. The Sky Original tag implies that if you go onto Sky Movies this is a film they made themselves compared to the other acquired films on there. But they had no involvement beyond the right to show it. As with the other films. I think the film's niche appeal and large budget is probably why the Hollywood studios passed on it (in a previous decade Paramount were going to produce it), so at least we can be thankful to Sky for giving it a cinema release. Although only in the UK, it's distribution elsewhere was picked up by other companies. And the actual funder of the film is an American independent film company called STX.

When cinema tickets passed the £10 threshold the good old days of multiple visits died. It's now a case of pick and choose a handful of films in a year and they all tend to be big tent pole projects. @@AchtungEnglander My wife and I went into a pub earlier this year and a pint of beer and a half of lager was just under £10. If cinema tickets only cost that then it's a bargain in today's world... or at least it is in Britain. For a good cinema I expect it's more than a tenner a ticket. It certainly is to see a film - a real film, not a video - at the BFI IMAX. Everything is relative and with the cost of employing a person today, business rates, turning on the electrics, insurance etc. etc. etc. it's amazing that anything is running at all. You're right, telly does seem to be the most viable entertainment these days but won't it be awful if we lose cinema completely? John.
@AchtungEnglander

@@moviecollector5920 I agree, but as consumers we all practice price relativity and opportunity cost. Given a lot of people have upgraded their living room systems to 4K TVs, sound bars and home theatres, they have built a cinema like experience at home. This is before technology could make VR easier to wear equivalent to putting on a pair of glasses. The demise of cinema would be terrible but given we live in a world where the high street bank is disappearing, businesses need to adapt. The best option would be to create more cinema subscription packages, incentives like free concessions (like a box of popcorn and a drink with the ticket price) or exclusive content like giftbags with material about the film or extra shows after the film like a director interview or making of the film. There are ways to save this business, I just do not see chains using any imagination or taking a risk. I wonder if a lot of CEOs are actually worth their salaries.

This in my opinion is a beautifully constructed film with some of the best performances and cinematography I've seen in a long time,on par with Oppenheimer in that regard as far as I'm concerned. However it's worth pointing out that this is a very different film than anything else in his filmography. It's really a European style character study,vs films geared towards American audiences. Both have their merits,but to call this film weak in any way shape or form is a total misrepresentation, and I think it shouldn't even be compared to anything else because nothing like it has ever been made before really. But manns masterful direction is definitely present. And like all his film it requires multiple viewings
