In today's video, I drive a Ferrari 612 Scaglietti. Not long ago, I had my first chance to sample the epic V12 GT from Maranello. Today's though is a little bit different - the popular but now maligned F1 gearbox has been replaced with a factory looking manual - but is it any good?

JayEmm, many thanks for this piece. Based on your comments, I have decided to spend the money converting my 2005 HGTS 612 rather than source an alternative manual car, such as a Porsche 992, at greater cost. I just love the manual driving experience over a robotic or auto box. The handling on the 612 is fantastic. It’s just the gearbox that lets it down a bit. I know the cost won’t be reflected in the car’s value, but I am not planning on selling it and am more likely to give it to my son when I am no longer insurable to drive it, which apparently is at 75. So, 15 years to go! I will let you know how it goes.

In my opinion the 612 Scaglietti is probably one of the weakest looking Ferraris of all time - not particularly beautiful (in my opinion) or exciting (in my opinion). White colour does tend to shave off a few years from the car, however, in this case it does very little. Rear of course is freshened up a bit due to the contrasting colours of the taillights and black panels, but the headlights in the body colour age terribly and even more so in white. The best colours probably have to be the darker greys, silver or that blue (also in darker tones and shades) Ferrari originally released the car in.

An underrated car from Ferrari. The novelty of a V12 in it. There's also the old school metal gated gearbox as well. I think that is probably easier to live with than the flappy paddles - despite the heavy clutch.
@tjanderson5892
@tjanderson5892 Жыл бұрын
100% agreed. If I could ever afford a beast mode Ferrari the last thing I’d want would be some lame paddle shifters. Is it dumb to ask if there’s even a clutch w/ those? Give me a classic standard tranny to slam gears and feel the V12. Paddle shifts on Ferarris imo are like gettin to ride a bull, but doing it in 4ft deep water. Still wild, but nowhere near the full experience

It’s simple - back in the day we were sick of manuals as that’s all we’d had for years: with phrases like F1 GEARBOX, SMG, SSG etc etc we were all excited for new ways of swapping cogs, and paddle changes looked so damned cool. It’s only after we’d had them for a while we realised the vast majority were inferior to manuals, and some were downright shite. It was something new though and that’s why we all went for it.

I manual swapped my late model Toyota Soarer with the 1JZ-VVTI engine. I added a Supra V160 6 speed, and used all factory manual components including ECU's and the Dashboard from the same model year, factory manual car. It all worked first go, and 1000% the car is better for it being a manual from a driver involvement perspective.

An open gated manual Ferrari has to be better than a robotised manual, 612 is very Colour and Wheel sensitive, paint it TDF Blue, with a tan interior and change the wheels to silver and it’s perfect

Contemplated trading in my manual 997 C2S for a left hand drive F430 with the F1 box almost 18 months ago. Verdi Ferrari can do conversion to manual on F430 and 599’s but they had a 18 month waiting list. The cost of the work itself at the time was circa £25k. Although the effort and wait would definitely be worth it, I would’ve been stretching myself too much financially and decided to stick with my 911 for now. It’s definitely something I would like to do in the future providing the prices of both the car and the work haven’t shot up ridiculously again. Nice review also 😊

I have been driving now for 60 years and I always had manual gearboxes in my fun cars, but moved to sequential boxes in my race cars when a win on the day was measured in 100ths of a second in a hillclimb. I had been knocked down to 4th with 3 sequential gearboxes in the 3 places and all of us on the same time until we got to the 100 of a second bit. And now my road cars are all DCG and can live with the heavy traffic without limping at the end of the trip. On some of the more demanding roads in the Queensland hinterland I can get just as much enjoyment from the paddle shift as I hurry the car up the mountain with 3 large bikes behind me that cannot close enough to pass. And when I get to the top and pull over, they pull over too and share the drive.

Jay, from what I have heard the 612 conversion is not as challenging as the 599. Something to do with the size of the torque tube and a nasty vibration in 3rd gear (which is present on the OEM installation as well). Great video as always!

The 612 has no touchscreen. Its TFT display was all cutting-edgey when these were new, and in fact you will find yourself grateful for its digital speedometer readout. The street driving range of 0 to 80 mph on the 220 mph speedometer occupies less than 90 degrees of the dial, making it a challenge to read. The standard screen on the TFT also has very legible oil pressure, oil temp, water temp, and fuel gauges, imo a much better setup than four analog gauges.

I think time has been really kind to the looks of the Scaglietti - I think it’s ageing really really well. If I squint, it has hints of a modern, Gen II Ferrari 330. I’d say manual 612s will become true future classics. Ferrari has a habit of doing that. The 348 was absolutely unloved in its day, but now it’s becoming a cult classic and much more desirable (and expensive).

If I could do a manual swap on my Jaguar XKR X100 I would if it was reasonably priced and didn't effect the rest of the car. It can be done but it's silly money to have it done. It's a shame Jaguar didn't offer it from the factory even if it was at a high premium.

yeah the transmission controller integrated with the stock ECU is the problem I think. If you go aftermarket ECU, options open up but you are still probably spending 5k minimum. Jaguar Specialties in the US does relatively affordable swap kits for GM v8s and manual trans, but if I was going that route I'd get an old XJS convertible with a tired engine and swap that instead. I'm in California so old Jags with no rust but fucked engines are pretty common.

It certainly is not for 4 adults cross country trip, in tact not many car can provide enough confort other than Maybach. Enough said, 612 is best fitted with F1 manual transmission for a GT. The question of "how much are you willing to pay for a manual swap" is a great one. In 2006, I spent $1500 US converting an SW20 MR2, which was absolutely worth it even with the Camry 2.2 lump we got in the US. Around 2018, I got a quote from a Jag specialist for $10k US to convert any V12 Jaguar XJS that one could drive to their shop. No doubt things are pricier now.

I`m waiting for the sporting car manufacturers to realise they are selling entertainment packages and many of their existing and potential customers want a manual. Autos are fine and yes we know they are now often the fastest version but they are boring and tend to give the impression the technology is in control, not the driver. I`ve personally yet to find a clutchless gearchange satisfying regardless of having a lever or paddle to move. Manuals rule.

@@nightdriver7216 I guess if the car is used mainly in heavy urban traffic auto is convenient however for those of us to whom a car is more than just a "video game " type experience a manual gearshift is an essential part of that tactile experience and I believe as things get more and more automated and technical things like manual gearboxes are becoming more desired. By the way as a 456 owner (6 spd manual) these V12 cars shrink around you when actually driven on the open road.- we also have a mid engined V8 Ferrari to compare..

Love your videos, but please - it‘s Porsche not Porsch, you don’t say Ferrar i.o. Ferrari as well … best regards from some guy actually living in a „Ferdinand-Porsche-Street“ in Germany! Keep up your good work 👍

Throws me off seeing the E-brake on the left side while the steering wheel is on the right. Is that normal for all right side riders? Or just this modded out horse?

JayEmm and Robin (brogenville): Could you expand on the comment that the fuel mapping is still in need of tweaking? Are you required to remove the ECU from the car to reflash it?
@brogenville

Hi bill, yes the two engine ecu’s come out to get reflashed. The only part I got help with was the corrections made to the engine flash files, which is where the ecu whisperer 360trev comes in. Look him up- his exploits in modifying Ferrari ecu’s are the stuff of legend. The 599 MAF’s are much bigger than the 612 MAF’s, and this is first 612 in the world to use them. At the moment the previous maps were all carried over, and just the calibration tables for the new MAF’s spliced in. It just needs a little fuel pulled out in the lower part of the Rev range.
