Our latest car for the dealership is this beautiful 2011 Ferrari California. It was due for some regular service including an oil change. We also noticed that the leather on the binnacle had started to pull so we sent that off with Jay from Just Like New Interior to get fixed. The oil change is pretty simple. You remove the under tray panel, drain from the drain plug. Torque the drain plug back to 45nm with a new crush washer. Then change the oil filter. It takes 11 liters of SAE 5w40 Pennzoil Euro Platinum.

Hi - I have a recurring ongoing problem with my 2011 Ferrari California which the official dealership here on the island of Cyprus cant diagnose or fix. Their ultimate suggestion was "for now, just drive the car until it breaks..." THE ISSUE: The car makes random grinding noises under normal driving conditions. The problem is getting worse over time, meaning, the grinding noise is becoming more frequent and noticeable. The car has 26k miles, RHD, UK origin. The noise feels like its coming from under the front passanger seat, which is on the left hand since since its a RHD car. Before the noise used to occur ONLY during light deceleration, however, now it happens at other times as well, including driving at steady speed and under light acceleration. It can also happen when the car is in reverse as well, but goes away immediately after I put the car in neutral. The noise can occur in gear or in neutral, and it can happen when the brakes are applied or when the car is coming to a stop using its own inertia. There is no "consistent" way to recreate the problem. The best chance of recreating the noise is to break from low speed and come to a complete stop. The noise can also occur after going over speed bumps or after making a turn. I have 3 separate audio recordings of the sound. Each sound sample is looped multiple times to make it easier to hear. Shortened link to Google drive: bit.ly/3aCOXeE Official Ferrari HQ suggested bleeding the brakes and changing the brake fluid, with the assumption that the problem was due to the Anti Lock Brake mechanism engaging prematurely. Bleeding the breaks and replacing the brake fluid as part of normal annual maintenance did not solve the problem. Ferrari could not suggest any other ideas. After getting no help from the local dealership and official Ferrari HQ, I was so desperate to find the root cause that I resorted to befriending ferrari techs on linkedin... yes, on linkedin... in the hope that someone would tell me what's wrong and how to fix it. One mechanic from the Middle East suggested the sound may be "crown pinion backlash" and that the solution is to replace the gearbox entirely, which is 20k eur + vat + shipping, and I'm not crazy about doing this until other options are exhausted. The car works fine, but the noise is very frustrating and disconcerning, and I'm concerned it will lead to a full failure of the gearbox/transmission unless it's addressed now. Instead of doing the right thing and initiating a recall, Ferrari HQ support is denying that there is a problem with their cars, which is complete BS, b/c the Ferrari forums are rife with complaints about similar issues with grinding noises. Unfortunately there is no common solution on the forums. Suggestions range from updating to the latest software (which was done) to replacing some hydraulic cables. In fact, the MotoTrend representative drive another california from Nicosia to Limassol after service, and said it was making the same grinding noise all the time. Have you dealt with similar issues like this? If it is indeed the crown pinion gear that needs to be replaced, do you have a way of sourcing this one specific part, so as to avoid replacing the entire gearbox? I am hoping that it's something benign like gearbox resonance from some hydraulic cables banging against metal.

is the cali a more reliable car than the 430?? what are its common issues?
@normalguysupercar
@normalguysupercar 2 жыл бұрын
It's slightly more reliable in my opinion. Engine mounts are common failure points.
@shawnhicks619
@shawnhicks619 2 жыл бұрын
Every Ferrari has known “issues”. The California, for a Ferrari, is much more reliable then the cars that came before it. The known issues though can be wallet busters if your not aware of them. The major issues are the engine and transmission mounts, sensor issues with the top, and the big one higher then normal (compared to others cars with the same transmission) DCT speed sensor failure and wire chaffing. At first the only offered solution for repair was a new gearbox. Now there are Ferrari shops that can rebuild the DCT for below 10k as opposed to 35k for a new DCT. The California has had far more DCT issues then the FF or 458 though all cars equipped with the Getrag 7CL750 can suffer from the above mentioned failures. It’s highly speculated it’s due to heat as the 2013 and 2014 models added a secondary transmission cooler or heat exchanger on the rear passenger side. By 2015 and the California T the gearbox was improved and to my knowledge none of the improved DCT 2015 and up suffered from failed speed sensors. Then other regular Ferrari issues that have plagued the brand are sticky buttons, leather shrinkage and intermittent electrical gremlins, especially if you have a battery on its way out. However if you find a car that’s had it’s issues sorted the only thing you really have to worry about are the engine mounts (inspect during annual service or if you detect vibration at idle) leather shrinkage and sticky buttons. Also expect a high price for brake pads and rotors but with a caveat being Carbon Ceramic brakes last a lot longer then steel, and assuming moderate spirited driving should last a very long time, less with track use. Also with the introduction of the DCT you now no longer have clutch replacement costs, as apparently the DCT is supposed to last the life of the car. Though I have it on good authority that even though the DCT fluid is supposed to be lifetime owners do change it, and many owners recommend it. So, for a Ferrari, basically everything 2010 and up require far far less maintenance making them far more reliable but have some very expensive parts should they fail. So I’m short it’s still a good idea to keep a maintenance fund, budget, or Ferrari new power warranty.

You should use Liqui Moly oil in your cars. The regular formula has the additional benefit of MOS2. I use the Molygen version which also includes graphite and green dye for helping locate any oil leaks in first 1,500 miles. Yes - green oil. My car has 220k miles and changed every 5k miles.

Dan -- I understand the business model such as for the Gallardo, where you do significant work to the car to increase its value and then sell for a profit. But I don't understand the case with the Cali...you bought it from a dealer, presumably at/very near market value, and then did very minimal work that can't affect the value very much. So how do you intend to sell for a profit?
@normalguysupercar

@@normalguysupercar OK, my bad...I misheard "from" when you had said "for" (and I did catch the friend reference, and was confused regarding the source -- the discussion around 9:21 made it sound like your friend had recently purchased the car from a dealership, so I thought he may have quickly decided he didn't like the car and wanted to sell it). In any case, the same concept applies (unless your friend is consigning the car through you) -- unless you bought it at below market value from your friend, how do you intend to make a profit? And if your friend sold it at below market value...why?
@normalguysupercar
@normalguysupercar 2 жыл бұрын
@@Scott-rf5ux Obviously we're going to buy cars below market value. Why people would sell to us below market is the same as why they do trade ins to any dealership. It's simple. No fuss.
@Scott-rf5ux

@@normalguysupercar Fair enough about people wanting a "no hassle" transaction. I do think that the model you're using with the Lambos could let you buy at market value (factoring in the car's condition) and still sell at a profit because I believe that the significant improvements you make to the cars will increase their market value more than it will cost you to do those improvements. At least that's how I hope that it works out for you guys :) btw, I had stopped the video a moment too soon when I originally watched, and I hadn't seen the damage. I'm glad it seems everyone is OK and I hope you guys end up whole financially, as well.
