What a tour this was! I can’t thank Jerry enough for inviting me out. A once in a lifetime opportunity that I’ll never forget. Jerry is at the pinnacle of what so many technicians dream of. Working on amazing cars with amazing tools. Can’t beat it. So much passion for the Ferrari brand, I can see Jerry making it far here. And a Honda guy too! I love it! Thank you SO much Jerry. If you enjoyed the tour Jerry took us on, give this video a Like!

He mentioned that Snap-On flank drive mars the finish on the bolt. However, you can get Snap-On wrenches without the biting edges for use on collectible cars, aviation etc. They have different options. As a retired technician I would never get near a nice car with a Pittsburg wrench-I've tried them and the tolerances are terrible and can round nut edges. I've also had them snap in two without warning. I've tried every tool brand (and own most) and will only trust Snap-On, Mac, Proto, Hazet or Wright with heavy daily use on important things. Icon and Gearwrench aren't bad for the money.

Very cool, loved this tour! Seems like a great guy, and I really relate to his story. I'm more keen on Mazda and Honda, but I guess I wouldn't be opposed to working for an ultra luxury brand if ever offered the chance (though I'm more of a Porsche gal, tbh!) Meanwhile, it's been a bit over a decade since I've last been in the auto field professionally. While I've continued to do it as a hobby through that time, I'm finally considering getting back in to the professional side of things. I'm anxious for a multitude of reasons tbh, but regarding tools, I really appreciate the ideas to add to my otherwise somewhat basic collection.

Also kind of sad to hear that even this work is flat rate. I'm hoping I can find hourly work here in Detroit. As he said, it's not a super high volume locale, and even if it was, I don't want to have to be in a competitive environment for that gravy work. As well, I don't like having to take shortcuts at the potential expense of my quality of work. I like being (relatively) slow and methodical.
@jerryf703
@jerryf703 Ай бұрын
Hey! Don’t let flat rate discourage you! Plenty of entry level positions that start hourly and progress to flat rate. One thing that comes to mind is Porsche’s apprenticeship program that is available at some of the dealers. Give it a shot! Also plenty of independent shops that specialize in euro and I am sure could use good people. Good luck!

They pay their techs crap compared to what he was making over in Cali, plus he has Lamborgini, Rolls Royce, Maserati, Alfa Romeo and Lexus experience. They're definitely ripping their techs off there with the type of cars they're working on.

You must be in Richmond. Should have came down here to Tidewater. Could have showed you marine diesel field service truck and shop. Great job.

I bought a snap on torque wrench from a guy in Austin that said he was selling his tools because he was going to be a mechanic for Ferrari and they provided their own tools. No idea if this was true or not but his name was Ed, anyone know Ed? Lol

Interesting! I know a lot of shops provide some tools but I’ve never heard of a shop providing all your tools. That would be nice.
