Ferreting equipment I use

A brief description of all the equipment I take with me ferreting, and some of the reasons why I use it. There is a lot more equipment you can use and other methods of ferreting. In this video I try and show you the basic equipment you need to start off with and all of the equipment I take with me.

Nice vid mate I agree with you about digging out the ferrets and as I have said in one of my vids I never put a ferret down without a collar on. Personally I like the mk1 detector as its what I have always used but I do use the mk3 collars.

Great video, I always enjoy your stuff. It is amazing how different our priorities are, I would not keep or breed from a line that stays with its prey, most of the time digging is not an option. I only use jills or young inexperienced juvenile bucks, always have a dog for marking and LOVE longnets for banks, combined with puse nets. Only lost 2 ferrets in 40+ years. Anyway all the best, keep the vids coming, hope you have a great season. Doug

Like the ferret setup and the Velcro collars idea do you ever bother worming your ferrets ?

and8630 nope never wormed a ferret yet. You shouldn't need to.

hi, just wanted to ask wether you think that velcro collar breeder bands would be strong enough for me to put through my ferret collar, also i have the back mk3 tracer box and a mk3 collar but its not the new circular ones ins differrent, do you know how much they anre to buy or where i could get 2 more as im getting 2 jills this year thanks

smith col the velcro breeder bands is what I use. You just have to make sure they are the correct width to fit through the tracker. If you look on the deben website you can buy the mk3 collars off there.

I buy them off ebay. They are puppy training collars. Just make sure you buy the right width to fit in the mk3

Great video mate I’m just wondering I’ve got a litter of kits that I’ve taken away they’re 7 weeks old tomorrow and I was wondering what age you wean your kits off Mum. Also when are you starting ferreting because I’d like to know when to get out as I’ve thought about going out for the past couple of weeks

any where from 6 weeks onwards. They should be fully dependant from 8 weeks. I should have started at the beginning of September but due to health reason my dad can't. I'll be starting in the next week or so. You can go anytime of the year but its easier from September til april as the undergrowth is less and there shouldn't be many young rabbits about, but that all depends on the weather.

Sorry just another quick question what do you feed your kits as they grow older and how do you get your hobs so big

zac rowe I feed my ferrets raw meat. The 2 hobs are only that big from the breeding lines. It's nothing to do with what I feed them.

graciesbabies they're on tight enough so they can't wriggle out of them. They get used to wearing them.

Ray Brown if you buy them with 1 collar they are £199 if you buy them with 2 collars they are £285. That's on ebay, they maybe cheaper elsewhere.

How do you get permission to go ferreting?

go and knock on doors and ask. Try any local farmers or land owners. dress smart and be polite. Tell them what you want to do and what you are willing to do. You may get a lot of no's and knock backs but eventually you'll get a yes and if you do a good job and they are happy word will spread and you will get more and more.
