I've found that the scraper makes as much difference as the rod. The Light My Fire obviously comes with a VERY good scraper. I'll bet if you tried that scraper on the other rods you'd find there's not that much difference.

I use only hacksaw blades for strikers because, well, it means I've got at least 1 hacksaw blade with me at all times. I've seen 100s of guys who can cut wood 10 different ways, but none of them can cut metal. If SHTF and I have to leave my home, I want to be able to cut metal, at least well enough to harvest a gate post and plumb hot air into my shelter.

Try changing your striker or modifying the one it has. You need a sharp 90 degree angle with a 60 80 or 100 grit sand I wont go over that if i modified the striker my self if i make my own i use a lathe cutting bit about 1/2×1/2 ×4 inch

Well,....saying a ferro rod "poked you in the chest"...Ha !....isn't, (nor should it be), a valid review comment.....however, I will agree, that although The Aurora is a great set-up, (aluminum capsule/O-ring for moisture), it does lack in "refined "spark production, using it's striker. (but you could use another striker or knife also).

This is one of the best firesteel comparisons on KZfaq! You have excellent hand control and technique. I see a lot of so called "experts" doing reviews, but I can tell you've actually got the experience to back up your oplnlons.

Country Prepper I'm also able to get a decent spark from about 1/2 to 3/4 inch of my Doan's bar and my Firesteel.com rod. I agree that the cheaper rods require more material scraped off to "light", so they're not such a bargain after all.

Nice demo. I think if someone is just getting started they should go with the best/easiest to use, the Light My Fire. Experience will allow you to use any that throw sparks to get a fire, but a beginner needs all the help they can get. Fire is so important that the extra money is well spent.

Those Swedes know their stuff, eh? I love all types of fire starters, tinder and so forth. I have that Bear Grylls one around here somewhere. I like the mixed metal rods that have a higher magnesium content and throw the how shower of flaming metal. I also purchased magnesium shaving off eBay so that if the weather is bad, I can just put those right on my tinder bundle and go from there. I also finally found a Corona sharpener to use as a striker and it is the reigning champion striker, imho. Great video, as usual, my friend. Stay warm and enjoy your weekend.

I one with the aircraft aluminum casing is by far one of the worst ferro rods I've ever used, I hope you're experience is better than mine. I'm a ferro rod addict, own more than 50, 40 of which are 6in × 1/2 rods, bigger is definitely better in my opinion. Firesteel.Com is the best rods I've ever used, but you pay for them. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experiences with me, I appreciate it sir.

using different strikers = different results. A good high carbon striker is the key on any rod.
@Countryprepper

+Ei Pi Actually carbon has nothing to do with it. You can strike a ferro rod with a piece of glass.

how doe the light my fire rod compare to a nathan4071 half incher ? can the LMF have little slivers shaved off to punt in the bundle like nathans ? BTW , really enjoy your vids :) jeff
@Countryprepper
@Countryprepper 8 жыл бұрын
+BOOTYMONSTER I would definitely go with the ferro rods from Nathan4071 mainly because you get more for your money and it is much easier to start a fire using natural tinder sources with a large ferro rod. I still like the LMF firesteel for small kits that you also have surefire man made tinder with. I should do a video about this.
@tikkidaddy
@tikkidaddy 4 жыл бұрын
Firesteel dot .com deluxe Bunker Tube...makes Solo look like a joke. LMF is excellent, just not big enough. I would gladly pay them more money for a 1/2 by 6. Nathan4071 has the best firesteels on ebay. With the 90 degree HSS square striker? You could set an ice cube on fire with his BEAST ferro. Tiny little ferros and flimsy strikers just tick me off and make me reach for my Exotac Titanlight.😂 Cubby Grylls needs to jump out of more planes, do something else to make his money He's not selling me anything with his name on it.😂
@duxdawg
@duxdawg 9 жыл бұрын
The LMFs only spark that easily until you have worn about 1/8 of the diameter of the rod away. After that they act just like the Coghlans. The ferros and scrapers you have are all very good but your technique needs work. Should always fluff your tinder, just heads up ball. Keep working on it, you're heading in a good direction by testing these against each other. Cheers mate!

im not sure if you knew this but there are actualy 2 different types of ferro rods or fire steels what ever you callem. one has less magnesium in the mixture than the other, I think the light my fire is one with the higher level of magnesium.
@joey8obby
@joey8obby 7 жыл бұрын
The one with a higher concentration of Mg combusts faster, and combusts hotter. That is why LMF firesteels don't throw a spark as far, but instead create a concentrated spark fireball right off the front of the rod. cheaper firesteels usually have the lower concentration. They don't combust as fast, don't burn as hot, but they throw a spark much more impressively.

Awwwwe, Wool ruins all the fun! If you caught on fire the other hand you could have had it on film and sold the footage to Hot Hands. I can see it now, a Hot Hand Super Bowl Commercial, Starting with your hands burning, then someone walking over and just says ''Hot Hand's? Your Doing it wrong'' End of comercial, lol
