This video is intended as the introduction on fertilization using pellets and explain how & when to apply and when NOT to apply as a general guidance. This is based on Hardiness Zones 8b.

Interesting information. I've always heard not to fertilize in the fall because you dont want to push growth when they are dormant that it could hurt the trees and to fertilize in early March. Thanks for the info!

Fertilizing in the fall is fine for trees that have established roots. We don't want to fertilize them in winter for the reason you mentioned.

Zman it all depends in where you live..here in Utah if I fertilize in fall the trees will try to push new grow and then die...this was my number one mistake I did as a beginner in bonsai...most places and all bonsais will benefit if you only fertilize during spring and a little during summer

Do hemlocks back bud in your experience? Ive got one going on its 3d year and I haven't seen any back budds.

Not really from old thick branches, only from the new and thin foliage.

Can I use small fertilizer pellet holders and place them around a large pot?

How frequent do you fertilise bonsai trees no one seems to mention this...thank you

usually every 2-3 months. For young material, I start it from March. For older ones, from May - Sep.
