Day two! In this second video of our four-part series on MIA Festival in Shanghai, we patiently wait for our local lighting techs to finish building the main stage and spend the afternoon configuring our control network, setting up the new artnet nodes, and preparing for the weekend to come.

Really love your vlogs. I am learning so much from these vlogs (spec sheets, terminology, inside look). And I really love your attitude! I am an LD situated in the Netherlands running some relatively low key shows (compared to what you do now) - about 4 universes and I am running Obsidian Onyx (Martin M-PC previously) with Art-Net. Looking forward your next vlog! Can't wait!

You are such an inspiration! Living in Sweden, basically all LD- edu is for theatre... But watching you gives me all kinds of hints/inspiration on how to think, even on mydmx 3.0 rigs at work. (Working at a youth club trying to get kids turned on to the whole live aspect of music/stages/FOHsound/LD) Big kudos to you for being an LD who is taking it to YT for all of us to learn from. And making it comprehensible!

Great video Christian🙌🏽 can never go wrong with too many splitters 😌 how did it feel running a show on 3 pin Dmx? What are your thoughts on the whole 5 pin is better than 3 even though it’s still just the same thing and doesn’t really matter? Or does it?
@christianjackson
@christianjackson 5 жыл бұрын
It doesn’t matter at all to me if the entire rig is 3 pin. As long as you’re not using microphone cable and the data cable is within dmx spec who cares what connector it uses.

Hi I'm a CS student, and a small project team and I are currently creating a (software) light controller. May I ask you what you would wish for to change in the usability of the controllers of the current industry giants (GrandMA etc.)? Further; I've seen you use various 3D Scans and models from venues: is there an unofficial norm to these?

Save money and space on Artnet nodes by buying the hardware used in carnival rides such as large ferris wheels. They are industrial without screens, mount on DIN rails, configure over the network like configuring routers, and once configured, need no attention. They are hardwire instead of all DMX jacks so a breakout box needs to be made. An 8 channel unit without the screen and configureation issues can be found here: www.sundrax.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/manual-ArtGate.pdf. These are easy to mount in a road case, can be POE powered, support DHCP, merging, have isolated outputs, etc. Ports can be configured as input or output, so you can mix in your favorite console if it does not support Artnet. Some devices can be configured to support E1.31. Put a bunch of these is a decent road case with a panel of the DMX jacks conveniently mounted, or distribute them to dedicated sections of truss and fly them using POE to send signal and power to them. Hint, Network cable and network switches is less expensive than DMX cable and DMX splitters.
