In this video I' m in Canosa Sannita, an Italian municipality in the province of Chieti in Abruzzo, to document the majestic parish church dedicated to Saints Philip and James the Apostles and its mighty and solemn bells. This church, resurrected in neo-Romanesque style on the rubble of the pre-existing one destroyed by the war on 24 January 1944, was reopened for worship, restored and embellished in the years 1970-1988 by the generosity of the entire Christian Community of Canosa and emigrated abroad with the help of the local Administration by will of the Parish Priest D. Giuseppe Grasso and of the Pastoral Council. It was dedicated to Almighty God in honor of the Saints Philip and James the Apostles by His Most Rev. Mons. Enzio D'Antonio Archbishop of Lanciano-Ortona on 26 November 1988.
The original 18th century church was in a rough late Baroque style with a neoclassical façade with a triangular gable and a large window in the centre. The portal was flanked by two blind niches while the lateral bell tower was a tower. In current architecture the facade is in exposed brick and is marked by string course frames. It consists of a rectangular central part with the central arch and the series of openings above it, and more rearward lateral parts that contain the side naves. The entrance to the church is via a gated portico which houses a statue of Christ the Redeemer. The door, embellished with a stained glass window of Saints Philip and James, has an architrave and is surmounted by a lunette. . The central body is surmounted by a fake cylindrical dome with a horizontal crown surmounted by a drum with a hemispherical canopy supporting a crucifix. The external walls of the main façade and of the dome drum are made of exposed brick and those of the sides are plastered. The church is divided into 3 naves, the larger central one covered with two pitches and the two smaller lateral ones covered with a single slope. The naves are delimited by two rows of rectangular cruciform pylons, with a column placed at each corner, with dividing arches up to the transept, which emerges onto the hall through the covered dome roof. The vault of the central nave has a lunette with windows on the sides. The side naves covered with barrel vaults are adorned with splendid stained glass windows and statues of popular devotion such as Sant'Antonio Abate, San Rocco, San Gabriele dell'Addolorata and the Patron Saints. The walls are decorated with prestigious paintings by the artist Giuseppe Candeloro.
The quadrangular bell tower is detached from the church and shows a elevation characterized in height first by three small single-lancet windows, then by the vaulted arched windows of the belfry and finally by a pyramidal spire. The belfry hosts a concert of 4 bells probably recast after the war by the Daciano Colbachini Foundry of Padua. They are electrically electrified with traditional Pasqualini logs. The notes of the bells are D3, F#3, A3, D4 respectively. The face of the bell tower facing the square bears the following inscription:
"LE NOVO MEDIOQUE DIE/SUB VESPERIS HORA/CUIUS TERRAE CANUSII/NOS COELESTES PATRONI/MATER AVE CONCINIMUS"
The third bell is used to sound the hours. In the video we see the plays performed for the solemn Holy Mass at 11 am, on the day of Corpus Domini (2 June 2024).
