Old school cutting list, but nice to see it still done that way. I had a project for a client to make eight sets of cupboards and shelving for eight rooms in a client house. I used a program on the iPad called Carpenter Pro I think, cost me a little bit, but, it saved nearly eight boards and did the calculation in 10 seconds. And I gave the cutting list to my saw mill, who did all the cutting for me. Saved me and the client a packet of money and only had 5 percent waste from the boards used. Love watching your projects,

And I recently started using thru Dominoes just to try something different and they work great as well. No issues with either method. Ron

Dave, I always enjoy your videos. Nice detail and narratives. I think the reason people might not follow your method is because it takes a lot of time compared to alternatives like dados or dovetails for drawer joinery which are much quicker if you get your machinery setup to do multiple drawer units and, I think, look much cleaner than pocket holes. Still, nice demonstration of another method of joining and assembling drawers.
@DavidStanton
@DavidStanton 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Jeff. I guess it comes down to what you are comfortable with and also what gear you have at your disposal. I may do some drawers a little differently with timber, but for melamine this method or using the domino seems easy.

Having recently bought an HKC with 1400/2 and the parf system for drilling the holes i can only advice everyone to do the same! Right now im working on ways to reduce dust. I have the 1400 set up in almost the middle on a 800x600 top. The suction is under the table where the saw blade goes. Too hard to explain how but it's pretty simple. Maybe ill make a video.

I am in awe. This is very enjoyable to watch, and when you used the track saw while attached the the drawer front I nearly lost it! I am also loving the use of metric system tools. I live in the US but am Canadian by birth and this 5/8 of and inch stuff sucks. I am an amateur DIYer, so my question is if I were to splurge on one Festool power tool/item - which one would you recommend? I am currently thinking the track saw is MONEY! Also, are you by yourself as you work and narrate? If so - you need to be on Netflix or something because your energy and warmth make the viewer feel like they’re in the room with you as you speak!
@DavidStanton
@DavidStanton 6 жыл бұрын
Hi there Judith! Thanks for your words of praise and encouragement. Totally by myself...never watched netflix and not sure of what it is? Festool make many tools and for good reason, they all do different things. For sanding, I would chose the rotex above all the others. For joining timber it is the domino 500. For cutting, the hkc 55 would be great. For drilling the CXS and the PDC18.

David Stanton Ooh, Netflix is an online streaming TV and movie service that has become so big in North America, that they produce their own content - the way a TV station produces a series. In the US/Canada we also have a lot of shows that are kind of like ‘reality TV’ - Some are about cooking, or home remodeling, I think you’d be a ⭐️

Interesting video Dave. I wish Gorilla Gripper made a version with a longer handle so you could use the shorter handle version in your right hand and the longer handled version in your left so that you can walk sideways to the panel you are carrying and be able to carry the load with both hands! I modified my second gripper with longer handles and it worked great. A older gentleman saw it and bought it. I told him he had to leave it to me in his will. 😊. Now I’m am getting to the age he was the. Guess I need to modify my replacement that I purchased. Time to make thinks easier for myself! I have started to use other fingers for jobs predominantly for everyday tasks such as holding a coffee mug, now I hook my thumb over the rim of the mug. Amazing how little things like this help. My index finger on my right hand is the one suffering most, so I give it a rest as often as possible.

Beautiful work as always David. I have really enjoyed the whole series based around the bench, I was just wondering, once you have screwed the one piece drawer front to the front of all of the drawers with the screws, could you then remove all of the drawers with the drawer front attached and then place the back of the drawers on the bench/floor and then cut the drawer fronts with the fs guide and plunge saw? I'm thinking that would be easier with my bad back and knees. KUTGW.

Hi Dave - great seeing work from start to finish. I was wondering - did you use the same 16mm melamine for the mitre station cabinets (top and bottom)? And is it just the stuff you can get from Bunnies and the like? I plan to build a similar (smaller) mitre station soon and am a bit hesitant to use 16mm material...
@DavidStanton
@DavidStanton 6 жыл бұрын
Yes Steve. All from bunnings but make sure you get the full 2.4 x 12 metre sheets as they will be HMR (high moisture resistant) unlike the stuff that is pre drilled and edged for wardrobes which will not last very long at all.

16mm material is a tad cheaper and it is easier to handle and lighter than 18mm. My 2 cents

Dave , I love the concept but my concern is the combined weight of drawers, tools, work and force on that work, i.e. chiseling a mortise, on the drawer bearings. Oh well, time will tell. good job, russ
@DavidStanton
@DavidStanton 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Russell. I share that concern but I have also had some triple dogs made. These are a bar that covers 3 dog holes with 15 mm deep x 20mm dia pegs. They simply push into the face of the drawer being used and the couple below and it shares the load. Time will tell but the main abuse these will be getting is support for panels as I apply edge tape and maybe some hand planing.

When you cut the draw fronts insitu you said don’t do this with a regular circular saw. Was that because of the aluminium?

@@DavidStanton First of all I'm sorry if I offended you in any way. I just found your enthusiasm about soft close mechanism very funny but only in a good way. I usually build drawers the standard way with rebate and thinner bottom or go with one of those prefabricated drawer systems from Blum or Hettich. Last week I started to build a drawer for storing papers of different formats. I decided to try your system as these drawers have to be very wide and heavy duty and all prefabricated systems that would meet requirements would be too expensive. Paper is surprisingly heavy. So I built one drawer and was thrilled with it. Virtually no sagging, no going out of square when you pull only on one side. After playing with it and watching your video for the 15th time ;-) I realized how actually the way you assemble it plays a big role. What are you doing is: when you assemble the drawer you first put the clamps at the corners and compress, then screw them. That creates a small bow in the middle. THEN you put the clamps in the middle and tighten the middle ones. This creates compression in all joints and MDF is very strong under compression. So I assume this is where the strength is coming from. So, to conclude my long story in bad English, I'm and avid follower and really like your enthusiasm and knowledge.

Dave, great ideas and video’s. However, how much would it cost to equip a workshop with all that Festool kit? Without which, most of the work you did would be totally impractical. Shame for ‘most’ of your audience, I’m sure.
@DavidStanton
@DavidStanton 5 жыл бұрын
Interesting point Barry Turner, but you don't need to buy Festool gear for similar tools. I use festool because they are the tools I prefer in some situations. You will notice I also have Ryobi, Dewalt and Hitachi to name a few. Most of my audience are resourceful enough to buy what they can afford and use my ideas to get a great result.

Ok Dave, thanks for the swift feedback (not many do that!) I do enjoy your video’s but ‘assume’ you’re sponsored with the amount of kit from whatever stable, I for one unfortunately can't justify so much kit expenditure, (here in the UK such items are very expensive!) but I do try and ‘copy’ ideas from many woodworkers, as well as you, on this medium. Keep smiling. Barry

@Toolman93 5 жыл бұрын
Barry Turner , As an amateur, I can understand your concerns. IMHO, the biggest advantage that Festool gear often has is speed and convenience - some features very important to professionals. You can often achieve the same or very similar results by investing more time instead of money with less expensive tools. However, I do advise anyone who can possibly do it to try to save up enough money to get a Festool Tracksaw combo (ideally with dust extraction). It really is a game changer. Some things (e.g. Dave’s drawer front trick) can’t be done any other way. But the biggest reason is the ability to ACCURATELY cut sheet goods much more easily and safely than you can possibly do it on a table saw (especially for an older, retired guy like me). I purchased a TS55 over 15 years ago and I’m pretty sure I’ve saved the difference in cost by not wasting so much expensive plywood.
