Both are used to talk about a small quantity of something. However, they have slightly different meanings.
You can think of "few" as not many. It emphasizes the lack of something.
You can think of "a few" as "some". It emphasizes the existence of something (as a small quantity).

Hi,Jennifer How is it going? I’d like to add an awesome remark concerning "few" if you don’t mind! You know "less" joins uncountable nouns e.g. less information WHILE "fewer" joins countable nouns e.g. fewer mistakes Examples 1) There were less people at the party last night (this is grammtically not correct) 2)There were fewer people at the party last night ( correct) 3) 10 items or less (incorrect) 4) 10 items or fewer (correct) You’re the best teacher I ever had, I still believe in Jennifer Thank you so much

It has the same implication as with an example of "half-full or half-empty glass". Is a glass half empty or it is half full? One answer has a positive connotation and another negative and both are correct.
