I've noticed the subtle changes in detail of facial expression. I wonder if that would be the case for older content.

Yeah reminder that 7.0 and ARR might be the only first parts updated with the rest coming soon after. You’ll see characters still updated but the additional environmental changes won’t be there in full, at least as far as we know now.

That would be very cool. There’s that giant chasm in the ocean to explore after all. If it’s not msq, it could be perfect to explore via relic grind. How have we not had a dungeon that includes some diving/swimming this far after Stormblood, that’s what I wanna know.

I think you need to think of it from an MMO perspective only and also consider the original art-style and age of the game. I do agree overall that the new graphics don't really hold a candle to some newer single player AAA games but from an MMO perspective I think this is a good first step in starting to modernize the game. Taking the most popular mmo in the world and giving it a fresh set of paint for the player base is only going to make the best mmo currently even better. Also the game does have a very large player base who have already registered an account (30 mil) and its a subscription game so I'm sure the main focus is retention of current players.

There's nothing sad about it. Visuals are part of presentation. If we had all the same music in the game but it was recorded at a terrible low bitrate and sounded like it was coming out of a trash can, it wouldn't hit the same. If the controls took 3 seconds to respond to your jump command, it wouldn't be the same. Most people would not accept such damning flaws elsewhere, why should they with the visuals? I mean it's a video game, you spend the entire time looking at it. So make it look as nice as you reasonably can without pricing people out of their hardware. Everyone cares about visuals to some extent. If the current visuals don't bother you at all, that's great, but it just means it met some minimum acceptability for you. If it was the same game with gray blobs and comic sans as the the font, you might reconsider whether or not caring about visuals is sad or not. This update isn't to wow people, it's to keep that minimum acceptable level at a point where new players aren't immediately put off by the fact that everything looks really dated. It's to keep the visuals from becoming distracting in a negative way. The antialiasing change alone is huge. The game is jaggy city right now and any amount of foliage just shimmers terribly as the camera moves, it's very bad. So these are very smart things to target.

​@@dafire9634See, you get it. But they're right that a big problem for the game was lack of shadows and weirdly washed out color. There is still room for improvement after seeing these changes though, just won't have to pump in so much compared to right now.

Because it's a single player game and not an MMO. MMOs are way more demanding and prioritizing performance will always be better than pretty visuals. Case in point: BDO. I can't get enough of those graphics, but whenever I need to do large scale stuff, I have to dial the settings down.

Do you mean anti-aliasing? I believe Yoshi has mentioned in the past that it is not something they can do much about because of the engine it is on, and it would require an overhaul. I could be wrong, but I believe he has address this before somewhere. I agree it would be a massive improvement if they could.

Did you both miss the part of the video where they're introducing new antialiasing AND upscaling methods? This will fix the issue.

The main problem is that this is an MMO not a singleplayer game, so graphics MUST remain accessible or you alienate a very large portion of players who just cant run it, So you need many players and spell effects as well as large zones, for example FF13 on ps3 only managed those graphics because it was a corridor simulator. In the first graphics update showcase they showed the base Hyur in CG and expressly said from the start they werent doing that. A lot of people underestimate how much just good lighting gives a scene, Warframe is an example where they got away with low res textures for years because of great lighting

No mod or shader provides proper antialiasing. There's a few that try but they fail. That DLSS toggle alone will shit all over every mod the game has ever seen, assuming it has a proper implementation.

They don’t just simply apply post processing shading. They redo all the textures with higher resolution.

Shaders are a filter on the image, they cant make gold textures reflective
