In this video I discuss my thoughts on the current jarring healer shortage that is plaguing Final Fantasy 14: Endwalker. This is a problem that goes way deeper than simply healers not being fun, but in the core designs of end game and raid encounters themselves.

I hate savage content in ffxiv. It's just a test if you memorize all the mechanics. There is no fun in clearing until you do. And if you do, you dread of the moment that you have to do it the next week again.

It's less of a healer problem and MUCH more of a other role types refusing to use ALL of their abilities (mitigations specifically) problem.

Personally, I think they're just over streamlining everything so it's making it boring. It has it's pros and cons, and was working to an extent because in older MMOs, you saw less of this specific kind of issue but the systems in games like Everquest have their own host of problems as a result of those systems, which is ultimately why so many games have rejected that system or moved away from it. FF14 wants every job in each role to be able to do everything which makes them all kind of homogenous the more they push into it, dungeons are more and more linear, you wall to wall pull everything then fight a boss like 3 times and that's it now with no real variety anymore. Healers feel boring because they all just spam one attack like 90% of the time, there is no support role or buffs/debuffs anymore aside from damage buffs really with very rare exceptions, all jobs are moving to a strict 2 minute burst which severely limits boss design and job variety even more, and pure vs barrier healers causes issues because again, they want all jobs to do everything so there isn't really a situation where one or the other truly shines or has much difference at the end of the day. I wish they leaned into the fact we can swap jobs whenever we want, made the jobs in the roles have very clear strengths and weaknesses with big differences in kits and then just change how gearing and materia works to make it easier for players within a certain role to swap within all those available jobs to fill whatever role is needed in the comp or for the fight to really broaden what jobs can do. And they need to bring back support and debuff abilities IMO, maybe even things like elemental weakness and resistance or magical vs physical(although that would be harder with job design) because it's hit the point where they're streamlining the fun and variety out of the game and it's made it so everything kind of plays out the same way more and more with only one way to do each type of content. There is almost nothing seperating jobs anymore but DPS or buffs to DPS and every job feels like it has to be basically the same as all the others in the role as a result. Give me at least one healer that actually has a DPS rotation, I remember cleric stance and all the shenanigans from back in the day, there were issues but I'd honestly take that over where it's going where the fun is getting polished out.

I used to play ffxiv and main WHM. And I have to say I agree with you here. I’ve recently hopped in to WoW and despite its may flaws, healing in it imo is more exciting than ffxiv.

I love 14, but I agree with alot of what you said. I miss how 11 had pure support roles too. That and I feel like boss arenas in 14 could be so much more dynamic to make fights more interesting . Always the same arena layout with no use of platforms or nooks.

what happens when SE focus content and jobs for casuals only, rotations are too easy, raids, relics, have been made easier, SE needs to a realm reborn this game again and listen to everyone.

The conversation that there is a lack of healers in ff14 is false. All you have to do is play the game. There is hardly ever a problem finding healers in content. Healers are everywhere in ff14. The duty roulette always calls for more tanks. Out of I think 8 choices in duty roulette like 6 will be needing a tank, 1 a healer, and the raids sometimes will needs a dps. Just turn on the game and see and this narrative is easily disproven

Yeah boss fights are scripted and the hardest part of endgame in 14 is the other players. I've been saying that for years.

I'm contributing to the healer shortage, because there's not enough healing to do. If you WANT to heal and be challenged, you literally fall asleep in anything but progression content.

Active healer in XIV here. I play SCH. I loved the complexity of it back in the day, and I still feel like it's the most complete of the healers. Sure, my main "rotation" for DPS is all of five buttons (DoT, long cast single target, short cast single target, consumable single target, and instant AOE) but on a mega pull in a dungeon, it's possible to slap the ground for nonstop damage and barely worry about the tank thanks to Excog. I miss things like our ground AOE bubble for damage and our multi-dots and ability to spread them, but I don't think those will ever come back. I do hope they add a consumable AOE damage for level 99 and give us back an AOE DoT.

This is the only video out of dozens that actually brings up the core issue of FF14's on-rails fight design. Everyone else glosses over this or gobbles up what YoshiP and the team have served for years in lieu of "difficulty" which is a slew of all-or-nothing "mechanics" while dancing around a memorized boss fight that is scripted down to the millisecond. At that point you're not playing the game - you're emulating a robot completing an exact sequence of predetermined moves.

As a healer main in both wow and ff14, and from a different point of view, at least you don’t get idiots who like to ignore boss mechanics expecting the healers to somehow keep them alive, because they’d just get insta killed in 14 raid fights😂

I mained healer for multiple tiers and a few ultis. This tier I had to swap to DPS. All the healers I know, either stopped playing healer or have said this is the last tier they will play the role. Either everything is going to shit, and people are dying and blaming YOU for stuff you couldn't prevent, or the groups are as smooth as butter and I get to spam 1 over and over again. There's no reason to play healer. At least with DPS I can work on my rotation, and fitting it into my buff windows.

I was terrified to play healer in FFXIV because healers were always the linchpin of the group and the one that saved everything.

The biggest turnoff playing healer in FFXIV for me was we went for "healers shouldn't damage enemies (or do anything else other than HPS numbers)" to healers DPS until someone dies, then SC + Raise because the numbers look better for the parse, because f*ck the party's damage, I want to look good on the parse. That's not a healer problem that's why I don't like parsers. I remember back in FFXI we has Haste, Slow, Dia (defense down), Repose (sleep that worked on unsleepable enemies like skeletons and ghosts) Teleports, Paralyze, Silence, and a host of Elemental and Status resistance spells, and Banish which stripped undead of their damage resistance. Of course, whether you meleed and "fed the mob TP" or not, people told you to just Cure. They expected you to stand still and do nothing until you needed to Cure. In FFXIV, Holy is an AoE stun, that halts packs of enemies for 7 seconds, and people told us not to use it, because it's a Hallowed Ground on every pull. But, because healing numbers and damage numbers > everything else, even clearing the fight, Cleric Stance and Holy was frowned upon. Now we just have Glare, Dia for 95% of our single target (which is 99% of "current content" because people don't want to deal with mechanics and adds, they want to dodge things and shoot things, because that's "skill" and putting up numbers on a parser is "skill").

I main a healer in FFXIV (astro) and a lot of the "healer shortage" is limited to party finder groups. A big part of that is party leaders setting the minimum ilvl to 615. I use the gearing paths for multiple classes. My astro gets the tome gear while I use the normal raids to gear my tanks and ranged dps in that order. I haven't missed capping my tomes and my astro is still ilvl 614 so I can't join the party finder groups even if I wanted to (and probably would since I enjoy the harder content). The duty finder for thing like roulettes are almost never healer in need. It's usually tanks in need for everything but alliance and normal raid roulette which are usually dps in need.

It's also a culture issue. I'm grinding out my heals to 90 right now. I've not had a single wipe and only 2 deaths in leveling dungeons. 0 commendations across all main scenarios, leveling, and other dungeons I've run. Hop on my tank to do extremes or 90 dungeons all 3 comps dropped on me at the end. Used to if you healed you got commendations, and thanks, not you just are a vending machine for health that is expected to punch everything in the face.

As someone who came over in the great WoW migration in ShB, you hit every nail on the head with this. I've mained healer since actual vanilla wow, and healing every fight in 14 is just....boring. I know when the damage is coming; one aoe cast + oGCD and everyone is good again. There's very rarely any maintenance healing, hell not even on the tanks really.
