Ninja's rework in 5.1 was so bonkers good. They had a huge identity overhaul and it's awesome now, easily my favorite of the melee DPS jobs. Super fast burst window, TA feels badass because everyone else syncs their own biggest spells and damage combos around it (I get a warm fuzzy feeling when I see Bahamut or Diviniaton come out during TA), and then the Mudras themselves are ridiculously loud so you can always hear yourself going BONK!BONK! when comboing, it's so much fun.

For me personally? I give the W to Dragoon. Decent support, fun mix of GCD and Off GCD moves to interweave. The spear play animations are beautifully. Getting your life of the dragon up for that big jump is just neat. On top of it all their Limit Break 3 is just beautiful.

Nice video, as always! One small note, though - as a DRG main, we actually aren't as mobile as people think. While Elusive Jump is amazing for a lot of situations, we still lack a true gap closer (which every other melee has, including tanks). All of our jumps should be used on CD, so they don't really count as gap closers, IMHO. This is made painfully obvious in situations like Shiva Junction in E12S. Mess up your slide by even a little bit? Big oof for uptime. My hope for next expansion is that DRG gets some kind of jump that is really only for gap closing, more akin to Shoulder Tackle and Gyoten. Could even have it share a CD with Elusive Jump with up to 2 charges. Otherwise I hope they don't change or add much, as I love the class as it is.

I don't really have any issue with Junction Shiva in E12S. You should be in a Life cycle during that point, so you can just use Stardiver after the stack. That also happens to be right around the time when either Lance Charge is ending or Dragon Sight is beginning, so it's still in a buff window. As for the knockback during Statues, you can actually use Elusive to counter that knockback. The knockback doesn't turn you, so you can actually use it to reverse the slide and end right where you started. Or, once again, you should be at a Life Cycle during that period, so Stardiver is ready just in case.

Update to anyone looking into this in late 2021: An update (I forget which number specifically) removed the Greased Lightning stacks from Monk entirely and now the job simply has traits called "Greased Lightning" that you get at the level when you used to be able to channel 1 greased lightning stack, and it increases in potency at levels when you'd be able to hold an additional stack. So now, instead of building up speed and maintaining it, Monks just come out of the gate fast and ready to kick ass.

Very nice video ! Ninja takes the W for me. Started the game with a random class, picked up rogue as soon as possible, then Ninja all the way to 80 (Ninja was the reason I wanted to try the damn game at first). I've basically done everything as a Ninja and THEN started to try other jobs. Ninja still feels the better in my hands because it's versatile af. You can zip around for free, trick attack is massive, doton is amazing for trash mobs packs, and the mudra mechanic feels amazing and rewarding. Also, it is secretly a caster. Sometimes when everything aligns perfectly, you can actually be a ranged DPS for a decent amount of time. For me, it feels like it has everything : single target damage, aoe damage, mobility, utility... it really is an amazing package. Also, you don't see THAT many Ninjas around because they don't have an actual starting class (you gotta pick rogue first) and they have the reputation of being hard. So when you are the only Ninja in a raid/alliance raid, and you are performing well, damn it feels good.

I play Ninja because of my childhood, always been a favorite of mine. Turned out to be a very difficult job to learn for my first MMO but now that I am 2 months in it's starting to get easier. (started the current savage raid yesterday with Umbra). I really like the mobility of the job with increased movement speed and Shukuchi. I also like that it has the ability to do decent damage at range for when bosses have mechanics that require you to be out of Melee range. The other Melee's are less efficient at ranged from what I have seen.

The fantastic design and balance between the four melees makes me have hope that one day the healers will have a similar situation. Tanks are almost there (DRK and WAR playstyles are too similar for me to say they're all the way), and casters are solid. I started 2.0 as a melee player, and for most of the game's life I've been one, but I recently had to go tank/healer for raid in ShB and so I'm kinda jealous. All four of the melees are so fun to play and optimize.

A possible con for SAM is it's optimal combo rotation isn't obvious and you have to fiddle with filler combos to line your big Iaidos up with party buffs. So what seems like a brain dead easy rotation is slightly awkward and changes with Skillspeed tiers.
@bwpbwp9613
@bwpbwp9613 3 жыл бұрын
This is a pro IMO, it makes optimizing on the job super interesting and rewarding. Keeping your tsubame and higanbana lined up with raid buffs and on CD even with having to lose GCDs to mechanics is super satisfying. Ex. I have to move out to do a mechanic that costs me a GCD. I normally use 2 filler GCDs with my Sks (optimally Yuki+Hagakure), so I will instead need to use 1 this cycle (optimally Yaten+Enpi).
@lethaltoconcrete2194
@lethaltoconcrete2194 3 жыл бұрын
@@bwpbwp9613 I agree. Samurai is very approachable, which is great, but the nuances of optimizing it vis-à-vis keeping Tsumabe off cooldown, doing filler GCDs and accounting for downtime either on the fly or because you know the fight mean there's still room to grow in skill. I feel like that helps it strike a really awesome balance between being new player-friendly and rewarding expertise for people who main it.
@HatsukaRaigeki

Thats one of the reasons why SAM is the hardest melee to optimize and losing one of the combo GCDS outside fillers results in maasive potency loss by the end of the fight due to how clunky tsubame and refreshing bana on time with meikyo is.

Having leveled all melee, DRG has the smoothest rotation of them all. As I main SAM, i wish it had the overall flow of DRG cause everything just...flows together. Nothing gets in the way, it just links to another part of the design and improves it. SAM, while nearly as easy, has some weird damage windows in fights due to Hagakure change and of course that Double Midare.
@anthonydelfino6171
@anthonydelfino6171 3 жыл бұрын
Possibly this is just me, but I feel the opposite about dragoon's rotation. The number of different skills required to make a full loop is so many, and the job has such a bloat of OCGD attacks and buffs, that at least for me on a PlayStation it's impossible to fit them all on a single crossbar, thereby making the job more likely to be played poorly simply because you missed a jump or something similar to that. Interestingly, as someone who mains monk, the rotation there is also pretty long, but it's just different ordering of the same six skills and the flow of hitting them and moving for positionals has a better fluidity to it that makes it more predictable.
@Riptitde777

DRG main here, I started a new character to relevel monk to try out since the changes. Was a lot of fun early on would say its the most fun melee in mid-arr levels but started to become a chore again at higher levels, switched to samurai and really enjoying that more than I ever have can see it becoming a solid back up job for me once I've fully got the hang of it at 80. For Monk though, just as an opinion would it be better if demolish had a shorter duration? It seems at odds with the rest of the rotation as you alternate between each skill for the rest of the 'combo' but only refresh demolish every 3rd turn, it would be easier to handle and get into a rhythm if it alternated like the rest imo.

The dragoon only gets Doom Spike at level 50, sonic thrust gets unlocked at 62, and the full AoE combo at 72 with Coerthan Torment, so only in ShB do they get their full single target *and* AoE rotations.

Hap.. your Midare on display looked kinda weak xD no 100k Midare? come on SAM is capable to pull that off^^ Though I love on NIN how everything lines upI mostly prepare with: Huton into Hide (resetting Mudra) Shukuchi to the Boss: Suiton > True North > Trick Attack > Shadowfang > Kassatsu > Hyosho Ranryu > Ten Chi Jin (into Suiton) > Meisui > Melee Combo Starter > Bunshin > Anokean Edge (+repeating the Anolean Edge Combo within Bunshin) I know this isn't optimized but it's just lovely how everything lines up! how Trick Attack lines up with Shadowfang and Kassatsu or Ten Chi Jin with Meisui!! NIN just became so much more Fun after the Rework, hench why they dubbed the MNKs Rework Ninjalevel xDD

This is going to be a very strange question considering the video topic but: during the first few clips, your character moved towards the striking dummy, but the camera remained stationary. But it seems as if this is your character and not recording another player while you're stationary as the UI updates with each strike in sync. How'd you achieve those shots [if you don't mind sharing your secrets] Cheers

Absolutely not. Ninja is one of the more mobile Classes along with Monk. Huton by itself makes Ninja one of the fastest attacking classes next to the Monk while Tsukuchi gives you a pretty sick smoke bomb teleport fitting the fast angle. The only abilities that actively roots your character is Assassinate due to animation lock and TCJ which is necessary to balance it.

18:35 - 18:45 photobomb, lol Makes me think of the Aflac Duck or something. :D EDIT: Oh, I should probably say something about this topic...but melee is the one thing I DON'T ever do in this game, so have no real knowledge base from. I have LNC at 20 or so, finally got NIN and MNK to early 50s, and...unlocked SAM. So many Jobs have ability bloat, and the melee are just insane to me. And while it's fun to do a Crystal Tower where I'm right up on the boss punching/slashing at it, it's hard for me to mentally track mechanics that way vs, say, RDM or MCH or WHM or...well, you get the idea. I want to level one to cap just in case there are role quests in 6.X that have different sets (I used PLD, WHM, RDM, and MCH, respectively, for tank, healer, caster, physical in ShB), as melee is the ONLY "role"subrole I don't have at least one of at level cap. But where Jobs like MCH will replace skills with better ones (heated shots) or casters/healers will upgrade skills (Stone/Glare line, Ruin lines), and some even have context abilities (RDM's Verholy/flare and Scorch), melee almost never have a simple ability overwrite at higher levels, so you end up keeping ALL OF THEM, which cases mass button bloat. And, unlike some other Jobs, you not only tend to keep them, you tend to USE THEM as well, meaning there aren't things like Fluid Aura that you can just drop off your bars if you want to free up a slot, with only a few rare exceptions (like MNK Fist abilities) but that even those could have situational use (Wind to move faster or Earth to soak an attack) And add to all THAT the fact I like to play Jobs by class fantasy/flavor as much as playstyle (the only reason I keep coming back to SCH is because I love the class fantasy of being a learned tactician/medic better than the WHM "sorta-but-not-quite Druid", even if the latter always seems to call me back as well; and I love MCH as the "everyman" Job made for common people to be able to make a difference in the world - to the point the Job stone itself says it has no history or memories and you're making your own; that is, canonically, the WoL has learned all the MCH Job abilities him/herSELF, and so doesn't actually need a Job stone to use them, where all other Jobs you're using the knowledge contained in the stone, hence your quickness of mastering advanced techniques...and also I'm from Texas, so love of guns just comes with the territory. :D [which is also what got me to pick up GNB; I still love PLD and feel it has the most "class fantasy" of being a tank, right down to being able to use Cover for an ally, but I also like that I only need TWO sets of crossbars for GNB while I need half a third tab for PLD...) ...needless to say, it gets complicated. :) I wish Rogue was a full Job, but...alas, it is not. So while I like the quick and slashy slashy fighting style, I'm not a fan of Ninja magic Naruto kind of stuff. And likewise for SAM. I like MNK, but can't play it to save my life. XD I do love the "Emperor's New Fist" glam and just going out and punching bosses, though. But the guildmaster that talks like an invalid (and tries to SPOILERS you) doesn't help, exactly. Which laves DRG...which I suppose I should try. Slower GCD with less abilities to keep track of and a straighforward rotation MIGHT actually be more mu cup of tea, and I've always liked DRGs in FF games, like Freya in FF9 or the DRG Job in FFTactics. So maybe.....

Way late... but Monk main here. One MASSIVE Con I can think of is Monk is the only class that doesn't have a (reliable) ranged attack. Dragoons can throw their lance, Ninja has Knife Throw and even Samurai can send a wave attack to slash at range. Monks.... have one if we burn our Chaka for ONE attack. So any encounter that requires a sustained "away from the boss" (like Her Inflorescence for example) Monk's DPS drops to 0 where the other melee can still get SOME damage.

Ive played most of the classes for ages, ive been a player since 2.0 and i go in and out of my "flavour of the month" picks. My "main" since it came out has been RDM but when it comes to melee, id say its a tie depending on my mood. That tie is between Dragoon and Samurai. Dragoon is so fun, the jumps the rapid hits and long combo chain followed by awesome party buffs make this class feel very rewarding with its combo of good damage and good team utility, you feel worthy, wanted and you dont just feel like you are there for one reason. Samurai on the other hand is a special kind of satisfying, I love this job for its totally "selfish" playstyle, you barely have to pay attention to positional as you only have 2 that are very easy to hit and you have a lot of time to set up for. You have amazing damage, the rotation is 2 parts strict and totally free which is super weird in a way, atleast when i play i feel like while yes it has a standard rotation, if you fuck up its very easy to fix and get back on track with the help of hagakure resetting your Sen, and Meikyo shesui allowing you to generate the sens you need. Over all I think they (for me) are tied. One is for that all rounder, the other is for that Focus of just doing raw damage. The recent changes to monk are great, I used to hate monk, mainly because it doesn't fit with my play style, im more of a caster player as it is, but the high GCD mixed with rapid positionals and a lot of them makes it feel annoying, the recent changes have made it feel a lot better but I still find it to be to busy for me getting lost in the rotation. Ninja is a nice niche, it kind of feels like the sister job to red mage, Red Mage is a caster that has some melee, as where Ninja because of its mudras kind of feels like a melee with some caster stuff, the set up to casting your mudras is fun, the burst is great and getting trick down is always nice. Its a pretty balanced in the middle (of my ranking) job. Over all like Happy said, the melees right now are all in a wonderful place and they are all worth playing and depending on your playstyle!

Last time I played Huntard they still used MP and rolled Need on everything. So I punched it into google and took the first result I got, which was a good 'ole Icey Veins guide. You want your pet to maul faces off to give you the Focus you need to smash things in the face with a two-handed weapon. While utilizing all manner of traps and other tools designed to kill. So far we don't have a class quite like that. Granted you will get a Company Chocobo that you can mount and fight with. This is part of the main story and its function is to help you out while solo'ing things in the open world. It cannot be summoned in dungeons or the like. Otherwise none of the melee classes summon pets aside from temporary ones like the Ninja's shadow clone you saw in this video or Dark Knight's shade. Summoner seems comparable. They permanently summon pets and give them direct orders not unlike Kill Command as part of their main rotation. They also have some really big burst phases. However they are casters that shoot magic out of books. Demonology Warlock would probably be a more apt comparison to this class. Looking at your rotation Machinist might be the closest mechanically as you have a bunch of different stuff to throw out on CD, or if charges are about to cap, or if Focus is about to cap. They even have a Wildfire Bomb of their own just called Wildfire that puts a status on the enemy. The more weaponskills you use while that status is up increases the potency of the resulting explosion when the status falls off. It can also be detonated manually if you know the boss is about to become invulnerable. Don't worry, they still have a fire cone aoe in Flamethrower and a poison one in Bio-Blaster. They also have a giant drill and bowgun. They are the class with all the rando gadgets for every situation not unlike Hunter's traps and stuff like Murder of Crows. However it doesn't use melee weapons, but guns instead. They also aren't available as a starting class. You need to reach the first expac which requires a lot of story progress and being level at least level 50. I would advise checking out Mr. Happy's video comparing ranged phys DPS to each other. That will cover Machinist and the most direct Hunter comparison, if only because they both use bows, Bard. Which is a starting class in the form of Archer. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bZxjdMmh2ayyY2g.html As for what's not in the game: In November we are getting Reaper. A class based on angry farmers that can't use magic, but did figure out how to summon demons. They wield giant two-handed scythes and summon a spoopy ghost that feels more like a JoJo Stand than a proper pet. Based on the little ability display showcase they had the ghost may generate some edgy resource to go into super edgelord mode. Unfortunately this Job will start at lvl 70 and will only be available if you own the new expac, Endwalker. If you planned on just playing the trial or buying the starter edition then you won't have this as an option at all. There is one other that may be coming though it's hard to say when, if ever. Since this game draws inspiration from all the older Final Fantasy titles we can speculate on classes that will be added eventually. Beast Master is a class in some FF titles, usually the Tactics ones IIRC, that has been expressed in an NPC in some recent content. There's an antagonist who wields a big axe and some really big monsters that he commands to kill you. This is in a 48-man raid where one of his greatest beasts is the final boss of the raid. At one point in the middle of the battle one of the parties of 8 people have to go up to a separate platform to fight him alone. During that time all of his beasts come out of the woodworks and the rest of the 40 have to deal with a fuckton of adds, 4 of which make the boss invulnerable. Those adds can be killed and the boss damaged again, but new ones will respawn shortly and the this is while the other adds are making massive aoes. If the party of 8 wins then the beasts shirk away seeing their master lose. If the party loses then the beasts go into a frenzy at his victory and wipe the whole raid. If you are curious then the raid is called Castrum Lacus Litore which is a part of the Bozjan Southern Front. That Beast Master dude also appears as a solo duel on the Front if you're curious about that as well. Mr. Happy has videos on both. Of course this doesn't mean we're necessarily going to get Beast Master in 7.0, or ever, but it is a good sign and pretty neat regardless. TL;DR Start as Archer, unlock Bard, get familiar with the role, and when you get to Ishgard go unlock Machinist.

i think people are missing something regarding the Monk changes: no longer NEEDING to hold onto GL4 means no Job needs to have a means of holding onto a buff, Black Mages have there one that needs time to re-use, but odds are once you NEED to do it again, you can just pop the skill, monk you had to either pop PB or build up from nothing. this allows a lot more freedom for designing raids in future, i hop to see more interesting fights going forth now :) i do like how we now have our 20% attack speed from the start, no clunky build up, and Botherhood buffing all is nice, im normally getting 2 to 3 Forbidden Chackras off. only thing i dont like is SSS being on the GCD, its meant to be our GTFO skill, but i rarely find i can pop it off, i would keep the double GCD thing on it after use but allow it to be used whenever like a skill, if they are worried about its high 540 potency, lower it a tad.

Ninjas still have to hold onto Huton. The cooldown is long and in dungeons you can just pop it before hitting an enemy, then hiding. Monk also now still has to watch its Twin Snakes buff, samurai has its buffs from Jinpu and Shifu... and I'm pretty sure dragoon has one to maintain as well but I don't play the job to be able to speak to it. Sure these aren't as severe of a loss as losing Greased Lightning was, but they're still out there.

@@anthonydelfino6171 my point is, how often do you NEED to pop the cooldowns? its not like it takes anywhere as long as the build up time for GL4, that is my point, the buffs you mention are typically maintained once up, like GL4 was but if that fell off you still had to hit at least 4 times, unlike other buffs which typically are button press. 4 skill uses vs one ability? the DPS loss was quite high.

As a MNK I can say the other stances have their fit. Often during certain fights when you know a boss is about to unleash their powerful raid wide aoe where you have downtime it's nice to pop Fists of Earth and Riddle of Earth for huge survivability. And during some fights where there is downtime but lots of movement, dodging attacks the extra movement from Fists of Wind makes it nice to avoid incoming attacks. Could definitely be tweaked but I would hardly call them useless, especially when learning a new fight.

I can't think of many mechanics where you need speed and have no uptime. Especially since sss gives you a big CD and you need to form shift and meditate and anatman so you probably don't even have time to stance switch. It's easier to just stay in fire and do all the other things we need to do. Earth may help sometimes but normally when you take damage, that's the boss becoming targetable again so we'd lose a gcd in fire

I just can't choose. For me, as I am not allowed to buy games, I also look for jobs that come together by 60. Which makes things harder. I want to pick Dragoon but Life of the Dragon, Mirage Drive, and Nastrond come by 70. Also, the fact the all classes have combos and that GCDs are longer than I expected make it so that Monk becomes slightly less preferable(also the positionals, I just can't do them), because I love combo-based gameplay like a fighting game, but the GCDs make that slower and the fact that all classes have combos means that I can get combos on other classes. I also like rougue classes and daggers, but the Ninja seems to be based around Ninjutsu magic, so that seems a bit boring. So which one should I choose?

@@PureOctarine yea i tested two scenarios with and without the anatman and the damage was up there and the rhythm isnt thrown off since you weve in ogcds any way just have one up to keep the damage going you'll be fine. I just don't like never having TS up

@@360spider06 but anatman isn't an ogcd. So it costs one gcd. Weaving one ogcd at a time is fine as it doesn't affect gcds but anatman does.

Monk has only two positionals just like dragoon unless im mistaken. Monk is helluva fun and dragoon too but a rotation a tad too rigid i guess il level them both then decide what will be my main.
