After FFXV came out, I played hours upon hours and tapped over and over. Effed up my thumb and wrist, nearly got a serious case of carpal tunnel. Gaming wouldn't have been the same.

This is basically the only thing I figured out on my own. My logic was that it makes it easier to phase if you can queue it up by holding both buttons at once, then just release attack as soon as you need to dodge

Another issue I have with the whole tap vs. hold the button thing is that the main attacks sequence (aka the Ravage part of the combo) animations-wise is absolutely not intuitive and unresponsive when it comes to tapping the button and design-wise goes completely against the rest of the combo partitions. That's why I forever will be butthurt about them replacing the combo attacks for one-handed sword they shown back in 2014 in the Overture presentation and during the October ATR. They actually looked like separated strikes, fluidly chained together rather than all of the swings being a part of one pre-scripted animation (even though they were initiated by holding down the button when they were shown). Such a missed opportunity to not give those attacks to Sword of the Father too, and instead they just made something that looks exactly like the Sword of the Wise combo.

Serj Angelo switching between regular sword and the wise gets those same attack patterns.

If you time your attacks with the animations you get different combo's and special attacks. Sword of the Father had one

This is really good! Now I dont need to explain this all the time xD Some details I actually did not know, like the range from Scepter :O

You forgot to mention initiation of back side attacks and corresponding link strikes. From my experience, tapping initiates back side attacks more often, but I hope you can test my theory and include it. The reason it'd be relevant to your discussion is because of the invulnerability these aninations grant as well as the high damage and removed damage cap (with AP invested) these moves have.

I haven't noticed anything like that. An attack always gets the Blindside bonus if you initiate it behind and enemy. Blindside link strikes just have a random chance of happening during these attacks. I just don't see how tapping/holding could affect that in any way.

Christopher John if you tap at certain frames in the attack animations you will do special attacks and do different combos.

The way you explain this makes think, why "holding vs tapping" was controversial in the first place?
@asetoniffxv22
@asetoniffxv22 7 жыл бұрын
Well, from what I can tell there are two reasons. People tend to think the one they're used to is the superior way, because it works better for them. It's easy to mistake being uncomfortable with one method to it being somehow worse. Also there are the million trolls and people who just are not very familiar with the mechanics who keep saying that holding the buttons is somehow the equivalent of an auto-battle. Like, this holding system could be implemented to Kingdom Hearts and it wouldn't make even a small difference.

Lulcielid time your attacks and coordinate with the attack animations and you will see that tapping offers more animations and special attacks
@thevideogamearchive.

Been preaching this since launch. You can hold but tapping offers different combos and more attack animations. Like with greatswords.. You tap once for the initial attack then wait and you will see noctis do a stepback animation. When he finishes that animation tap attack again and he will do a area spin attack that is awesome but in all the videos I have watched no one else has ever learned it. Sword of the Father also has one and alot of other weapons have different combos too. It's timing along with coordination. Kinda like the amiger unleashed combos

The Video Game Archive Its because the whole point of the video is to show that both are pretty much the same thing. There are no aditional combos when tapping or holding o.o

The Video Game Archive what you are talking about is called Charge Attack (name gave by Comrades), where stop attacking and then attacking again does a special attack.

MemoriesLP No these moves have been in the game since launch and charge attacks are something different. I just found this guy's channel but he does have videos on what I'm talking about. I'm actually happy I found them cause I actually learned somethings myself. Find his greatsword moveset video and you will see. The move I described is called tempest

You can do "Charge attacks" by delaying your next attack, but those are possible to do with holding and tapping.

The thing I don't like about 15's combat system (other than being terrible at explaining what you can do with it) is that it no longer mentions the CRVCD system even though it's still in the game. Another thing that bothers me is that some weapons are far more effective to get the full combo out (case in point, Great sword ) if you hold the button instead of tapping it. However with some weapons (like KOTW) you are also much less effective with tapping the button as opposed to holding it. You know how you can stop attacking after holding or tapping the button to go into the finishing blow? In KOTW's case, you have to be at a certain point in the combo in order to cancel into the finishing blow

I the reason why remnants of the Episode Duscae system even exist in the game is because of some really messy spaghetti code in the combat system. They just built the current system on the same foundation and thought "yea, it's fine". I really haven't noticed any difference whatsoever with greatswords, no matter i I hold or tap. Could you elaborate? As far as I know, KotW doesn't even have a manual Finisher. It just comes after doing combo starter and four attacks. Canccelling only makes you start from where you left off.

" is that it no longer mentions the CRVCD system even though it's still in the game" Not only that, it became severely more random compared to Ep. Duscae both 1.0 and 2.0 versions which were much more consistent compared to the final game. In Ep.Duscae (and hell, even the Platinum Demo) I always knew what attack will be initiated after the dodge roll, I knew that my offence would always start with a Crush move and and that when the enemy's health is critical, Vanquish move will initiate. Final game though is random af with the lame ravage combos activating absolutely randomly at the start of your assault (which is especially not fun when you're locked on to an enemy that's like 5 meters away from you).

Asetoni FFXV when you use a great sword, from my experience if you want to get the entire combo out it's better to hold the button rather than tapping it. I say this because I am currently trying to learn combos in the game and saw a great sword tech vid as one point of reference (you commented on it). I don't remember if the guy said it in video but some of the combos he did were impossible to pull off if you tapped it. I only found out later in a comment that he said it was crucial to hold the button. I can back this up, because when fighting smaller enemies with the great sword if you tap it, more often then not Noctis will keep resetting the 1-2 horizontal swing. Holding the button, even against smaller enemies will allow you to keep getting the full combo out as opposed to tapping it. As for KOTW I'm not surprised you say that because I had the exact same problem. You do have a manual finisher for it (I assume you mean vanquish) BUT you have to be very close to when Noctis does a sort of pose with it. You can clearly see the pose before he lands the finishing blow. I want to say that if you are within 3-2 hits before the pose you can cancel into the finishing blow. It's really weird. You can also cancel from the pose as well, but the only purpose of doing so is to switch to another weapon to do an attack or finishing blow then switch back. An example I can give for this is to get near the pose (I find being at the pose makes it easier for switching) and do the Trident of the Oracle/Swords of the Wanderer glitch. After you switch back you can go into the finishing blow

Serj Angelo could you elaborate what you mean when you say the game is random with combos? The CRVCD system is still in the game, it's just more free compared to the demos. In Duscae, you had to lock one weapon to each slot, and whatever action that connected to that slot would bring out that weapon. In the retail version, every weapon can now utilize the system in itself if that makes any sense. In the demo, whatever you had locked to descend would always bring out that weapon and only that weapon. Whereas in the retail version every weapon has its own descend animation, or counter animation. The thing with that system in the retail version is that every weapon has its own CRVCD system and the beauty of it lies in chaining attacks with different weapons

Ah, I know the video you're talking about. I'll have to re-watch it and try that stuff again to see how it works then. Interesting stuff. I'm still very skeptical about the KotW Finisher, if only because no other Royal Arm has that. Man, I wish I could test this now...

Meh. I wish ffxv had either gone the full fledged action game route like nier or been completely turn based instead of this unresponsive limbo with wasted potential. The 'advanced' techniques in this game are a joke.

well that's what happens when they're forced to make the game "accessible". holding should have only been for charge attacks, not auto attack imo. KH did it pretty well in regards to combat not being too complex and easy to pick up and keeping solid performance(for the most part)

funny part is : Most reviewers that gave bad score for bad gameplay don't even know this. To hell, They though the whole game is holding button.
