Nice work on the fender. Little trick before you lay the fiberglass, trace the outline edges with a sharpie pen on the tape. It'll transfer to the fiberglass and give you an easy to follow line for trimming the fender out.

I’m going to be a critic and say this isn’t how it’s supposed to be done. Three thin layers is not going to cut it. No gussets or stiffeners. No mounting flanges. You should have made a stiff mold instead and then used mold release, gelcoat, and chopped strand mat and you’d have almost perfect reproductions of the foam overfenders and they’d be strong. I can’t imagine trying to fix what you made enough for a finished product. You were so close!
@BuildCreate
@BuildCreate 4 жыл бұрын
Never mind a bit of criticism. I added more layers, but never mentioned this in the video unfortunately. There are many adjustments i want to make, these will be much easier when there is a little flex in the shell. I'm always changing my mind when it comes to things like this and i wanted to keep it open to changes. Once i have the final shape i want i can make molds further down the line if i wish.

Nice. Technic wise I'd say use a bigger bush to get the resin on. Dont be shine with the resin I'd usually soak the first layer because the next layer will soak up the excess resin from the first layer and makes it easier the wet out the next layer. Also wet each layer before moving on. And give every layer a good roller get out as much air as you can and really work the resin through the glass. And the main thing is work fast... Keep it up its looking good.

To nail the other side make an other one using the inside of new one as a mold then cut it into equal 2 inch strips to make a identical templates for the other side. Cut templates out of foam. Use cloth not the mat. only use mat for making molds. I build for the big guys. Add cf to lips, edges and attachment points, use honey comb to prevent flexing, add hidden brackets to keep rigid, if it vibrates, or flexes it will create micro cracks leading to failure.

Absolutely true, and then a rubber "rolling pin" roller wheel tho contour / shape, but also to "inject" or push the resin thru matting. This also leaves you with flatter surfaces, less air pockets, etc etc, afterwards.

1. ALWAYS use a respirator with activated charcoal filters when mixing and/or applying polyester resin. It's toxic stuff - carcinogenic. Some old time glassers have passed on or gone REALLY STRANGE from not using a respirator when they should. 2. NEVER allow fiberglass dust from cutting or sanding to get on bare skin. It will itch so bad you'll want to skin yourself. DAMHIK! 3. Similarly, a t-shirt isn't really enough protection from dust but you can get by for brief periods. 4. Chopped strand mat (CSM) is a lot easier to wet out (laminate) if you brush on a really thick coat of resin first. That way the first layer of CSM will wet from inside and outside. Mix the first brush coat of resin with something to thicken it up, where I live the thickeners usually used are Cabosil, Qcell, or fume silica (all of which require respirator use). 5. The mold is pretty flexible with only 3 layers of CSM, so before you peel it off the car, glass in some stiffeners from strips of wood, or bend some thinwall rigid electrical conduit and glass that in. The resulting stiffness of the mold will make life easier later and your mold won't be flopping around.

Nice work! I've got 2 questions: first of all, why fiberglass, and why not carbon-fibre ? the second is an easy one, how can you make it symmetrical ? Im wondering on that all the time, when i want to make a widebody.. ordering a kit is like 3k$, but DIY i cant imagine how i mirror the exact same shape&lines to the other side... Thank you ! :)
@BuildCreate
@BuildCreate 4 жыл бұрын
GoldhandRenthal Well, I’ve not worked with carbon yet. I’ll probably make the front diffuser and side skirts out of carbon to get a feel for it first. There is a still a possibility of giving the fenders a carbon skin....not 100% yet. I like to make shit up as I go haha. As for symmetry, I cut two of everything...that includes all the supports behind. Also, take a shit load of measurements. It’s a lot easier than you think. Hope that helps dude!
