I have cuttings from a ficus that I've kept at 4 ft for 3 years now, (Its outside, and I've been following Bonsai concepts when trimming and repotting.) and can't wait to try a clump style. Thank you so much for making this. My first crack at bonsai was a ficus ginseng and it failed so badly (from lack of experience) that I had hesitated to try indoor bonsai again. Fast fwd 2 years and my wife received a ficus ginseng as a bday present and promptly handed it over saying, "you're the tree guy." After watching this, I feel much more comfortable with the idea of indoor bonsai. Keep up the great work! Maybe sometime a video on feeding indoor plants?

I love this video, because it takes time to explain some time scales. Could you make a video discuss this as an overal hobby. I'm brand new to this and one thing that no one seems to discuss is how ,long things take to happen and how often the trees need attending to. Other than watering daily, I mean how often do we repot, and why do we repot, How often to prune. How often to bend and shape. I understand this is different for each species. So let's give an example. I have four trees. Do I tend to them twice a year, once a month, once every 2 years? - I love your style of teaching and enjoyed every video on your channel so far. thank you so much for taking time to make these.

A very good explain on pruning and repotting , from the beautiful small ficus exhibit, one gathers that a lot emphasis on the shape of wood structure during the development period.. Truly you have a keen eye of a Bonsai artist🎉

My favorite bonsai material by far is ficus. Lived in Florida for many years and ficus do so well there. Just moved north so I will have to protect my trees for winter. F. Nerofolia and F. Retusa "tigerbark" are my two favorite. Both do great propagation from clippings.

Can you do an update on these trees please?? Also, I am encouraged by your trip to the Wicklow Mountains a while back. I would like to do a forest bonsai but I want to make into like a fairy garden or some such. I really loved the rocks with all the moss and all the moss on the trees as well. Can you tell me what trees might be the best for this project? You said in one of your videos that moss growing on the trees is not good, are there any that might do ok with moss on them? Is there any particular moss I would need to use? I have a yard full of random moss all over the place, I hope I can use that, it's freakin' everywhere! i had a really hard time finding a ficus locally that was not a "ginseng" ficus. so i bought the ginseng and cut the grafted thumb thick top off the big bulb of root stock. and planted it as a large cutting. now i have a real ficus bonsai on its own roots lol

Hello, great video! I wanted to ask do you let all your trees grow for like 3 years before you start to prune or cut branches so that they produce a thicker trunk? I'm just getting into bonsai and I got a ficus ginseng, but since its the middle of summer idk if i should cut or prune anything and wait for spring or juat let it grow for a few years?!

I've never used wire, that's interesting. I have a ginseng ficus in my kitchen window. I have removed any yellow leaves near the base. I also trimmed off any thin dying branches. It has never been fertilized. Will Miracle-Gro work, and which kind should I get?

Hi. I've been struggling to find an answer to a bonsai question for months now, and I've now resorted to asking in the comments of random youtube videos about ficus. I have heard conflicting claims about what ficus trees can be grafted/fused together. Some have said that anything in the same genus will work. Others have told me that they need to be the same 'species', not saying anything about subspecies or cultivar differences. In your experience, how forgiving are taxonomical differences in ficus grafting? Specifically, I'm hopeful to try and graft oak leafed creeping fig to a larger bonsai, to give cascading and trunk-crawling foliage, but that benefits rather than harms the main tree. I know that grafting such a small stem to a larger tree is going to be a colossal challenge, but I'm up for trying. If it really is anything in the same genus, I can buy bonsai starters for very cheap, and just go with that. But if its species only, then I'm kinda stuck. Of course, there is such a thing, though rare, as full sized creeping fig bonsai. I'd rather have a slightly larger bonsai, and I'm not a fan of the cascading style they all use, but that would be a workable option. Except, I've heard another set of conflicting claims... I've heard a few times that Ficus Pumila Quercifolia isn't the correct scientific name for oak leafed creeping fig. I cannot seem to find it's real scientific name, but regardless, I'm now suspicious of its actual taxonomy. If you have any advice/knowledge on these topics, I would appreciate it very much.

When making clump trees could they be cut so the cambium connects at the meetings of the trunks like grafting?

Adam, I have a question about my ficus ginseng. I bought a larger one that has grafted branches, and I'm finding that the leaves are falling quite a bit. I am keeping it inside in a fairly well lit area, watering as needed etc. I'm wondering if planting it in a deeper pot next spring would help it establish more roots? And I'm wondering if I remove some of the grafted branches if that would help the tree? I'm not a fan of the grafted look it turns out! I'm totally new to bonsai, and have mainly been doing basic care for my bonsai trees, the most successful of which are my ficus ginseng, but this larger tree is relavitely new to my collection.

There isn't a "repotting season" for ficus, especially if kept indoors. Otherwise very cool video. Enjoyed your content. You really know alot and are doing a great job. To be clear the consensus was to repot in the warmer months because most people move their trees outside in the warmer seasons, however if they are kept indoors it makes no difference. Unless kept in a really cold room compared to normal house temperatures.
