In the 18th episode of "365 Days of Plants", we cover the care tips for Ficus elastica 'Variegata', which is a popular large "tree" variety available for the home. I don't usually find them as large as its cousin: Ficus lyrata, but still yet, these are relatively reliable growers and can reach impressive sizes after many, many years. We'll go over where these plants are from and their general care tips.
You can check out more of these videos here and on my IGTV @homesteadbrooklyn.

Hey! Fun fact: Ficus elastica *definitely* grow in Sumantra. Not "maybe." And it's actually quite important. The higher altitudes of Sumatra where rubber trees grow as a part of the rainforest are one of the only few remaining places orangutans and other endangered primates live in the wild. Without ficus elastica in Sumatra, orangutans' natural environment in the highlands would literally wash away. Rubber trees' strong root structure in nature is that strong! It's fun to have ficus elastica as an indoor houseplant (I have several varieties. I LOVE it!) but also really important to emphasize its native importance.

Off topic: I really love your accent. I am a Filipino and whenever I watch you and your featured plant, I can't help but adore how clear and understandable your english is. No need for a subtitle whatsoever. Subscriber and a fan here. Your goal of telling interesting things about a specific plant for about 2-3 minutes per video is a stress reliever and so satisfying to watch at least for "Plantitos" like me. (That's what we refer to plant lovers here in the Philippines.) Keep up the good work and happy planting!

I bought a tiny baby ficus elastica at a local nursery it’s only about three inches tall. I’m sure in several years I’ll have a plant that is much too large for my space but that’s future Kelly’s problem. My point is you can get these lovely plants without making space for a giant tree (yet)

I recommend super bright light for ficus. At low light, it'll die. At medium light, the growth will be stunted to 1 leaf every 2 months, with lower leaves falling off fast. 4 hours of morning sunlight is good for optimal growth indoors. It'll do best in a greenhouse or full sun, with a shade cloth always ontop.

I treated myself to a small, plain green version of this ficus about 15 years ago, as a lovely desk plant. It’s since gone thru several pots and grown into a massive specimen that lives on a sideboard and nearly touches the ceiling. These can be a little hard to keep in good condition. I’ve had to move it far from any window and supplement with LED lighting. It’s also been overwatered a couple of times - it lives in a pot with no drainage - and actually started to rot, but I saved it both times with drenching and flushing and a bit of peroxide. It will drop leaves when over or under watered. Mine was getting terribly leggy until a year or two ago, when new branches and leaves suddenly appeared near the soil line. Now the base has filled in nicely and it’s just the middle that looks oddly bare. I think that will fill in though over the next year or two. I was thinking about air layering it and dividing it into two smaller plants, perhaps giving one away to friends. But now I don’t think that’s necessary. Laziness has paid off. 🤣 It hasn’t quite outgrown the pot, although I’m not sure where I’m gonna put it or what I’m going to put it in if it grows much larger. It’s already arguably too big for my apartment, but it’s doing so well I guess I’ll just work around it.

So these can actually be "beheaded" and will root from the stem, if you treat it with rooting hormone and root it in a well-draining soil. When your elastica gets so tall it starts to brush the ceiling, you can propogate that way! www.gardeningknowhow.com/houseplants/rubber-tree/propagation-rubber-tree-plant.htm I have one about 3ft tall that I am nursing to health from an outdoor store (the gentleman actually heavily discounted it because it was in such rough shape). I will be moving across the country within the year, and plan on beheading mine and taking the cutting since it will be easier to travel, while "gifting" the rest of the plant to a friend or family member.

The lady simply loves her variegation! 👩💕🌱 Even lighting and proper watering. Use this high tech meter when you water☝Give it a good drench then don't water until your finger is dry at the second knuckle. Also, rotating the pot a quarter turn every time you water will keep your ficus elastica straight and tidy. 🌿😊👍

I propagated the healthy top of a fungus-ridden variegated ficus at the end of the winter. By summer, I had it growing in almost full sun in a west facing balcony at a Mediterrean climate. Apparently this thing loves light even more than most people seem to think. I was initially apprehensive of full sun hitting it for more than a couple of hours, but then I saw that as soon as a new leaf opened, the tip kept growing and the next one would pop in a week, which I'd say was like triple the growth rate I'd seen. The weird part is that after a while, leaves tended to take the darkest of the green hues of the plant almost entirely. Now that it's back inside, the new leaf seems variegated again. I'd think this would be more likely to happen if it was growing in insufficient light rather than the opposite.

I have 6 Rubber plants(two green, one black, two varigated, one Altissima)which I bought from a very small size a year ago and now they're all thriving.they're all right behind my windows.I use bigger sized plastic pots for them(bigger than what I usually use for other plants) with lots of drainage holes and I use 30% normal potting mix+ 30% extra perlite,+20% coco chips or orchid mix+20% vermicompot for them and fertilize them once a month(except winters). water them almost once s week during spring and summer. in mid spring I prunned them and now they're two-branched.going to prune again when each branch grows it's third leaf(if it's still summer by that time). do the pruning only if it's spring to mid-summer and or if your plant is actively and rapidly growing

Quite alike, except for the rosy tint. "Tineke" has white to cream color patches. Another variety named "Ruby" has the same pattern of patches but also has a rosy cast from the edges inward. Ruby's cataphylls also carry a deeper rosy or orange-ish cast, looking like a flower is about to open. I believe Summer's model here is Ruby. I have one also and it's always a thrill to watch as the colors change day after day.

I just got this plant, and the newest leaf, which has yet to open, started getting kinda soft at its tip. I watered it once in the past two weeks, making sure the soil was completely dry. I have it up near my South West window that is more West than South, though I am in Montreal, and we have had weird cloudy weather for the last ten days... And, I have lightly washed her leaves and also sprayed her a bit to make sure she has humidity. I also put a little tray underneath with rocks and a bit of water for added humidity. It can be pretty dry here, but got the humidity in the house up to 50/60%, so maybe don't need the tray? Anyhow, I love this plant and the leaves, and I just don't want to do her wrong :) What would make that new leaf wimpy at the tip? Thanks Summer Rayne!

Aaron Reynolds I’m having the same problem, do you know what caused it? Im thinking I overwatered it when I first got it... and it wasn’t getting enough light either.

What type of grow light do you recommend? I have the darker kind of plant near a south facing window, but there is a cover under the window that blocks out light so they don't get as much as they could. I am worried that come winter they may not do so great in the space I have them in.

Betsy Begonia did a great video about grow lights recently! Basically there is a lot of information about people trying to grow fruits/vegetables/marijuana indoors and the technical specifications get overwhelming quickly. But if you're just trying to keep your plants alive over winter, a basic LED task light placed a foot above your plant and left on for 12 hours a day will help a lot.

If the tips of leaves turn brown on a plant is it best to cut them off with a scissors, pinch them off with your fingers or leave them alone?

Hi, I live in Tasmania Australia 🇦🇺 and bought this plant from Bunnings. It’s on the small side still but has lots of leaves. My question is temperature...Tassie is freezing in winter as well as cold at the moment in Autumn. I have it on a bookshelf in a warm north facing room. Seems happy as the leaves are in good shape. A few leaves curl and curled at the sides. Is that ok? Also I have a west facing window that gets filtered afternoon sun in winter, but the heat pump is in the room in lounge. Which would be the best place for it? Best temperature? and when to repot? Thanks.

I wanna know too! My neighbor has an outdoor 15 feet high ficus elastica that he trims twice to thrice a year once the tree is already bending and he just throws away the cuttings. I'm gonna ask for some cuttings for propagations next time he trims his tree.

Easy to propagate with cuttings. I'm sure there are many videos on this platform to explain it.

Would this grow under a 6 ceiling led lights that each produce 2500 lumen in different directions ? 3000 lux on the light meter going higher the higher i check this from top level of the ficus.

I have little black bumps on my ficus elastica, but I can't figure out what they are. I've cleaned the leaves with a diluted Castile soap mixture, and the bumps swipe clean off. Can anyone help me identify what they are?
