strum bowing is a concept of playing all the subdivisions, but only letting some ring out and muting the rest. Tracy Silverman of Turtle island string quartet coined the term. It's more of a way of thinking than a sound effect. I think it's definitely possible to integrate strum bowing with chopping, either vertically (chop + lift) or horizontally (chop + up bow*). It will be considered strum bowing as long as you keep moving your bow alternatingly. Once you flip the direction or rest for a subdivision, then it's no longer strum bowing. *By Up Bow, i mean playing a solid note with a horizontal motion
