Thanks for sharing . I have a 50ah pack made with those lifepo4 10 ah cells in a 50 Cal amo box and haven't had a chance to try it at field day yet so we'll see how it holds up. I picked up 4 , 50 watt solar panels to charge it and with a pwm controller want to try that mppt you have there but it's a little pricey right now. I have my controller output of 30 amps, and to help protect the lifepo4 cells in case they run down to 10.5 volts instead of a bms .

I would venture to guess that 50ah would get you through field day with the solar charges hooked up. Let us know how it goes when you get a chance to field test it. 73, de KM4ACK

One mistake I've made was not measuring the current draw from the Raspberry Pi. It's not much, but over many hours, it adds up. I think at your latitude, 10ah isn't enough for 24 hours contesting style @ QRO. Please read Peukerts law. I took out the big guns 576wh solgen with 2x PowerFilm R28 panels. Portable power was a non-issue. If I can only do something about the lightning...

Yep. Pi draws around .3AH at idle from a 12V source. Will certainly add up over time. I avoided QRO since I only had 10AH to play with. Panel did fine but battery will need to be upgraded for events like FD. A simple POTA activation would be fine with 10AH but FD is just to demanding. de KM4ACK

Great report for FD2019 Jason =) Sounds like our FD as well just add a tornado, hail, and CG lightning that started about about 8 PM Central Daylight Saving Time ( in the dark 8-) We got a heads-up from the National Weather Service Tulsa / Logan / Johnson County Emergency Management Regional Manager =) We where three station setup =) One station in a small travel trailer, one in a tent and me in the truck ( many a time in real disasters usual setup =) I used my 25 year OLD SCHOOL 45 watt solar panel and solar charger and a type 27 car / truck battery already assigned for that purpose =) Plenty of snacks and open and eat can foods with small cooler with cold drinks and a two liter coke bottle of frozen water to cool it down with and drink later on if needed =) Yep I need to add this to my " Wordpress " with pictures =) 73's Pat N5VMO

Tornado. 😳 Nope. I outta there. We had a F4 come within a 1000 yards of the house in 09. One of the things that pushed me to get my ticket. We lost cell service and power for a few days. And now you know why I focus on emcomm. I just upgraded the solar panel this year trying to shave weight off of my kit. I’ll use the old 50W panel for another project. I have one in mind. Now I just need to find the time to get it done. 73, de KM4ACK

@@KM4ACK The tornado ( F0 in the air ) was about a 1/4 mile away up above and just north of out mountain top FD site .... it was not expected =) I told the guys at FD site I would recognized that sound anywhere and take cover ( most had not had real tornado experiences as a person or as a weather spotter .... ie the help of the local EC manager and Norman OKC / Tulsa Weather service / Johnson / Logan county EC office ( some of their members where at FD site ) called us on the local repeater =) We did have a tornado shelter within 50 feet of FD setup =) The park ranger ( one of three Park Ranger Hams as well ) was up there with us after making a run through the park warning everyone in the park and lodge areas =) The CG and hail was interesting /-)

I always carry a tarp/ground cloth. A habit from my Boy Scout days. Also upgraded 3 decades ago from BSA knife to Victor Swiss Army knife with multiple useful tools in my pocket. Since 9/11, and establishment of Emcomm, some common military terms and acronyms have surfaced into Amateur Radio conversation like AAR, after action report. Prior to that awful event I was keeping records on my and club success/failures following field day, but I called my reports 3WD. Not 3-wheel drive but What Worked and What Didn't. I am happy to see the many hams on youtube that are showing thousands of other hams and millions of non-hams what is special about this fine hobby. I take a special liking to those hams that are QRP OP's, run CW and digital, use the Raspberry Pi with Linux/or derivative OS, and make a lot of their equipment rather than spend money at the "Candy Store". I enjoy your videos and the way you go about making them. Thank you. Best 73 DE KB8AMZ

Always having a tarp is a great idea. Knowing I had one in the Jeep though allowed me to gloss over it in my FD preparation. Lesson learned. My go to pocket tool is the Leatherman Wave. Like you, I have kept notes at work and personally for many years now. Especially for events that only happen once a year. The name ‘After Action Report’ is just something that most seem to recognize now. What worked/What describes it perfectly as well. Visiting the ‘Candy Store’ is fun but you don’t learn as much as when you build it. Funny thing is, this channel has pushed me to learn more about the pi and linux than when I first started publishing videos. Often, it’s the viewers who inspire future content through comments or email. Glad you are enjoying the channel. Hopefully it inspires and educates the community. Thanks for your support! 73, de KM4ACK

So glad to see this! I thought I was the only one who did AARs on Field Day. They have helped me as I review them each year. BTW wnt to the link to d/l yours and after giving it my email, it said the server could not be found. Could be my antivirus and stuff, just wanted to mention it, as I really do want to read it. 5 pages! mine are never more than 1/2 page, but I am a Boring Old Retired Guy! Good Job

Sorry to hear about the rain... I didn't mean to jinx you! But you made the best of it in true Ham fashion! I have a similar power meter and you're right, it's invaluable! I also use the Genasun charge controller that you have. It was a good tip from Julian, OH8STN. I have a Bioenno 12v 20Ah battery and have had a good experience with it. I also have a few smaller versions of the same brand. The 20Ah is as about as big as I would want for my man-portable bag but they make a lot of sizes. The 20Ah also handles the peak draw I need for my FT-857D which can be kinda thirsty as far as portable rigs go. However, I like the 100W capability and the 20Ah can dump a max continuous draw of 40Ah. 73 Rob

I can't believe how much I rely on that meter now that I operate on batteries and solar. It's hard to know where you are with lithium iron batteries because they maintain almost a constant voltage until near the end. Thanks for watching. 73, KM4ACK

@@KM4ACK one other thought, I have Anderson power poles on everything including the portable solar panel (not powerfilm yet... tight budget). I can throw the meter on the charging side and see exactly how the solar is performing too.

Thanks for noticing background noise issues, and putting them where they belong--the bloopers reel. It's one of my peeves of content on YT. Maybe it's radio thing. Gold star for editing. This is the first of your vids I've seen. I'll catch some more later. FD comments: Wonder how many more hours operating you could have gotten with your TX power reduced? Maybe more capacity would have allowed more storage from your solar panel too. 73 de W1ADE

I run a pair of these with a 150 watt monocrystalline panel and am able to run full barefoot power (Yaesu FT-857) through the night with a tablet (and on my 1/4 wave instead of the EFHW): www.batteryspace.com/lifepo4-battery-12v-25ah-300wh-50a-rate-with-led-indicator---replace-sla-12v-20ah-lighter-weight-and-higher-capacity----un38-3-passed.aspx Have been really pleased with them. These batts are going on 3 years now without a hitch. In fairness, I'm pretty fanatical about discharging them to 50-60% before storing them. Cheers, KG5USS

You might consider adding a zip cord with Anderson poles with spring clamps for your jeeps battery / alternator. Use your Jeep to charge the LiPo battery in a pinch. I realize this violates your goal but still might be handy. W9KW.
