Thursday night marks the first-ever Major League Baseball game in Iowa, and its being held in Dyersville, the town made famous by the film “Field of Dreams.” TODAY’s Harry Smith got a preview.

Dyersville is my grandpa's home town. I wish he was alive to see this. I played a little ball with him on that field.

Greatest baseball movie ever made. If you didn’t cry or get teary-eyed during the movie, then you’re not human. It touches your heart and Soul at the same time. I saw it 10 times and I can watch it again and again.

my 12 year old son and his best of the best all star teammates played three games on the original field of little league in Williamsport..I'm not sure he understood the history or the importance of pitching on that sacred mound but for me, it was humbling..

@@flexvision2000 Yep! Being from Iowa, I had goosebumps from beginning to end of this game. I love the White Sox and hate the Yankees, and obviously loved how it finished. Either way, it was cool. When Kevin Costner said "I didn't hear you", the fans let him have it the 2nd time. I'm curious if they might make more bleachers for next year. When our boys were young, we took them there. We loved how immaculate the entire place was.

Yes, and it is too bad they are going to do it again in my opinion. I think it will dilute the 'magic' of the novel and the movie, but that's the way of the world we live in...

I am from this town. Life there is completely different compared to any big city. Main Street is two blocks long. I have taken my sons there and we have had four generations of family out there. My older son who is the baseball kid got to play against the ghost players. They are the Harlem globetrotters of baseball. They put bases shorter than the normal runs for the kids. When he was running to second the ghost player stole the shorter base and ran away with it. My son looked at the normal second and ran to it and told him he made it to the base. They all had a good laugh.

This was set in the best place possible because this area of Iowa is some of the flattest ground you will find. If you go farther to the east, you'll run into the Mississippi and it's bluffs. I had goosebumps from the night of the game. Especially Kevin Costner's comments at the beginning. When he told the 8,000 he couldn't hear them, that jacked it up! Is this Heaven? NO, IT'S IOWA! I'm sure there were plenty of people who saw this as a gimmick, but for the people who were there, it wasn't a gimmick, it was beauty!!

This should be an annual event using retired baseball all star players. You would have had to been in an Allstars game to play.

@@chuckers40 Yea but an annual regular NYY vs CWS game isn't as compelling as a HoF game... maybe do both? Several teams have old-timers day, where they do the old timers game first and & then do the regular game, that could work here. In the movie they were all ghosts of HoF players (or other players they deemed worthy enough like Dr Graham).

just visited the field earlier this week - (Father and Grandfather have roots from IW) but my lady and I went on a road trip and stopped to play catch and hit a few balls here - (her second time visiting - first for me). The field is hallowed ground - and I think it may be heaven.

The today show: if you build it he will come... and shoeless joe Jackson came." However, when the voice said "If you build it he will come," the voice was actually referring to Ray's (Kevin Costner's characters) dad in the movie, NOT shoeless joe jackson.

Exactly. That was the tear-jerker moment in the movie when you realized that an applied it to your own life. Especially if your father had already passed away.

Actual field is too small. It's little league size and no room for large grandstands, etc.
