I recently acquired a Sony PCM A10 portable recorder for use with field recording. Join me in seeing what this is capable of in the outside world.
I was surprised to find there wasn't much out there in terms of audio tests for the outdoors, so I decided Ito upload something that may assist people like myself who are looking at this device for field based use.
I personally love it, but the sensitivity to wind can be problematic, even with sufficient wind protection latched onto it. This is just something to bear in mind, but the quality is great overall & it's portability is also really handy - Pun intended.
If you would like to check out more of my field recording / ASMR based audio, you can find it on my Insight Timer profile below:

I have a set of LOM MikroUSI and use them attached to a hat for a stealth semi binaural type recording rig, whats great about this set up is you can place the recorder in your pocket and monitor your lev as well as start or stop recording directly with the Phone app, thus you can be pretty stealthy as it just looks like your looking at your phone. I have recorded restaurant ambience this way try the app if you have not it really makes this recorder so much better. Plus because you have control of your lev via the app you can make small changes during recording that would not be possible without loud click sounds if you were to do this directly on the recorder itself. Overall a great little recorder love mine I like others really think they should make a line of MKII versions of all there classic recorders but they seem to only be concentrating on cameras not much pro audio recorders anymore it seems.

I do the same sometimes with Clippy EM272’s and the results are great. As you say, amazingly discreet setup.

Great review! I love my A 10. I use it here in Japan for ambient recordings and also for interviews with sake makers and the like. I'm surprised they aren't always available overseas though, based on the other comments here... the A10 and D10 are always available here, both new and used.

@@markfrank7207 it is a great recorder and definitely has a special place in my heart amongst my others. I managed to get the A10 here in the UK on Amazon a while back. It looks like you can still get it there occasionally. Bizarrely though, it’s very hard to get your hands on the D10. There are a few specialised shops that sell them, but they aren’t largely available. I’d love to get a d10. I’d also love to go to Japan sometime too so if I do I’ll have to factor in purchase of a cheeky d10 whilst there I think haha.

@@EQAVOX With the weak yen, now is a good time to visit Japan! A brand new D10 can be had for around 50, 000 yen from Amazon Japan.

@@markfrank7207 blimey that’s a good price I have to admit. I do find it strange how difficult it is to get the D10 in various countries. It’s almost like Sony doesn’t want people purchasing these things sometimes haha.

If I'm going to get the Panasonic HC-X1500 camcorder to document life, record walking tour, KZfaq product review with me at front and also back of the camcorder and also want to try to make music with record singing and instruments too, should I get Sennheiser MKE 440 or I should just get Sony A10 which has on-board mic and is a recorder too and should I get a seperate mic for singing and instruments, any recommendations? Does the quality of these mics on them different a lot you think? is 32 bits necessary?

Great little recorder to always have in the pocket or backpack. I just wish Sony would start making them again, or come out with new models. Was the recording using the A20 on it's own, i.e. without Clippys ? I guess it was by the sound of it.

It is extremely handy and I pretty much take it everywhere with me for that reason. Yeah, these are all recorded with the inbuilt microphones from the Sony PCM A10. I have to say, I was really surprised by the quality overall. They are definitely good quality for a handheld, but obviously not a patch on external microphones like the clippys. It’s just nice to have the ability to grab it and record anything and everything in an acceptable way. Coupled with the clippys though, it takes it to a completely different level. Personally, I’m really looking for Sony to implement 32-bit float in a newer model. If we could get a 32-bit float recorder from Sony with inbuilt mics that match the legendary Sony PCM D100 in quality and preamps to match too, I think I would be I heaven. I suspect many others would be too. If they did this and had two versions, one with XLR inputs and the other without for just PIP mics, it would cover so many people’s needs and I suspect they would sell like hot cakes. I’ll keep my fingers crossed.

@@EQAVOX I know George Vlad often uses his A10 with LOM MicroUsi mics for his professional recordings, and they always sound amazing as you will hear on his KZfaq channel. It would indeed be perfect if Sony did a new release of the A10 and a D100, but even the D100 doesn't come close to using it with a decent set of external mics. The D100 seems to lack on the higher end of the sound spectrum. Would be amazing if they released a D100 with the Clippy EM272 capsules. They would 100% sell out in less than a day.

@@lookingforsounds I’ll definitely have to check that video out. Those LOM Micros seem amazing from what I’ve heard, I’ve just never had an opportunity to get some myself yet sadly. Having said that, the Clippy EM272’s are certainly on par with them I think, but the more microphones the better I say. I’ve never had the pleasure of using the D100 sadly, but I have heard a lot from it and those mics are amazing. Though I do agree, you can definitely get far better results with external mics. Not to mention the benefits of creative mic placement and wider stereo imaging with clippys.

Was the outside recording made with the low cut filter on or off?

Was the outside recording made with the low cut filter on or off? Thanks

Hi mate. I had the low cut filter on for these recordings. Purely because they are so sensitive to wind, even with the protection on them. They sound good without the low cut too, but outdoors it can be tricky to get a good sound as they seem to pick up even a slight breeze, even with a deadcat. However, they are very sensitive so pick up sound really well.

Hi! Hope you're okay! I've noticed that you just posted the video two days ago. I've been looking for the PCM A10 for about a year, but it seems like no one is selling it. Could you please tell me where did you buy it ? Thanks in advance!

Hi mate. I bought this from Amazon here in the UK. Seems available on there but I understand it can be difficult to get elsewhere it seems sadly. Hopefully this improves though if you are having difficulty getting hold of it. I’d quite like the D10 too but I can’t find that anywhere either.

@@marcsugier ah that’s frustrating. Good luck finding it mate. Another field recorder I can recommend is the Roland R07. Similar features and sound quality to the A10, just slightly larger. That may be a bit easier to find. I showed the R05 in this video for a size comparison (the predecessor to the R07). I think the R07 is around the same size as the R05 shown in this video.

The built in mics are a little bit noisy and quite small so you will not get the same sound quality you would with a larger mic capsules and also as mentioned the built ins are highly susceptible to the slightest wind, but if you plug in a good set of mics like LOM or Clippy's then you well get a really clean sound, as the pre-amps in the A10 are really excellent, the extra noise one might hear is coming from the onboard mics not the pre-amps. As far as 32bit goes I have an F3 and a MIXPRE-6 II and find that where 32bit shines is when I am recording something like thunder where one has no idea how loud the sound will actually be, with anything else were you can carefully set your levels. 24 is absolutely fine and has been for a long time. JUST MY 2 CENTS but To my ear the MKE 440 never sounded that great with anything I have heard it tested with. I consider this more of a ultra compact Field Recorder then something I would record music and or singing with.
