Spent today testing out the contents of my get home bag. I set up a tarp shelter, heat up some water in my alcohol stove and go through some of my gear.

a little tip when collecting water with high turbidity eg suspended silt, mud etc. Go to your local garden center and buy a bag of Gypsum. In the size bottle you used a pinch or approx 1/4 teaspoon of Gypsum dropped in would knock all the suspended particles out and they'd settle on the bottom. Best to use a collection container other than your stainless bottle because when the gunk hits the bottom its sorta like a cake material. Try it with a plastic coke bottle, let it sit for about 30 minutes and you'll be able to read a newspaper thru the bottle. I use Gypsum on my fish pond and can tell you if I put too much I can see the fish on the bottom like an aquarium. I learnt this from a man whom worked at the city of Port Neches water treatment plant years ago. Gypsum will not harm you. If you use it and then use your Sawyer or Grayle to filter afterwards it will extend the life of your filters by them not having to remove mud.

With the exception of the overly long and unnecessary intro, I thought it was a really good video. Thanks for the useful information.

I just finished going through my Get Home Bag and though not tested as you have here, the contents are quite similar. I haven't a saw but don't feel I need one to get home but I have added a pair of binoculars like yours but will be changing it out for a monocular; also added a tarp and rain poncho. Everything is pretty much like yours. After making the video, EMERGENCY GET HOME BAG, I had several suggestions and added them to my kit, as shown in REFINEMENTS. Even our packs are about the same size. Much appreciated. Good travels.

I really like those tarp ties you used... Think those are going to be in my bag now, just makes since to have them... Although my bag is smaller I still have all the items I need to get home, this bag rides in my Jeep Wrangler along with other things I could carry if needed... Great Video, keep up the good work and stay safe...

No one else ever mentions trash bags (for trash). I always assume they are just going to leave their food pouches, TP, ...whatever, scattered where ever they stay.

I have been reading the comments and many say the same thing, test your B.O.B. or Get Home Bag. Excellent advice and you practice what you preach. One other thing you may want to have is a Wood Gas Stove, you find the fuel in the woods and you don't have to carry any. You can make the stove yourself. Your advice on carrying an alcohol stove is very good. The alcohol can be used as fuel and as a disinfectant for any cuts you may get. A bivy or SOL would be good addition and not add much weight. Just some suggestions, A good video, thanks. Subscribed

Don't take these comments as hating. - If your tarp is facing the wind in a rain storm you're gonna get wet. If you can go to a truck stop or walmart for stove fuel, you're not bugging out you're homeless. (not that there is anything wrong with that). Why didn't you spend the night?

Something no one seems to do when 'testing' get home bags. Where is the detailed map of the areas you will be traveling with the route marked? Have you tried it. How many 'bad' neighborhoods are between you and home? How many rivers will you need to cross. How many back yards with dogs to set off alerts? culverts. Where's the compass to keep your bearing? The bags I've seen on youtube videos seem to cover the basics once you get out of the city, but what about inside it.

I do not consider a "get home bag" to need half that stuff. You are after all just getting home. Most people work within 15 miles of home and usually would not be passing through uninhabited areas. A poncho or umbrella for rain is nice. Some water and a granola bar is nice, but not really needed. A flashlight is nice for night. For protection a whistle and either a gun or at least pepper spray. Other than that dress for the weather before you leave the house and if you need to wear dress shoes then bring a pair of shoes/boots that are comfortable to walk those 15 miles in. Maybe a pair of hiking sticks as they make the walk a bit easier. You will find you can walk safer of rough ground and keep up a better pace for longer with them. If you want a tiny survival kit in case you can not get home directly or right away then fine, but this whole idea of a "get home" kit is kind of a joke and 90% of people likely need nothing. I myself work at home and rarely drive more than 2-3 miles from home as the city I have is rather small but has plenty of good stores and everything else I get on line. It is also a very safe town and it is right on Lake Michigan so drinking water is never a problem. The only issue I have with the video itself is that water you poured into the pan to boil is not the murky water you collected from that stream.

Here in the U.K. we can’t have pepper spray or a gun for protection. Heck a whistle mustn’t be too loud in case you hurt an attackers ears!!! I’m only half joking here.... and the scum are running amok while decent folk run scared....both of the scum and the stupid law protecting the scum!

a little confused about why you would carry camping equipment in a "Get Home Bag"... Hopefully you are going to be with in 100 miles of your home an you can go weeks with out food so a three day force march should not be a life threatening concern as far as food goes..you are going to want to be moving and covering as much ground as you can, only stopping for a power nap...

You can have a cache with extra propane and another thing I was watching a video you need to know your body weigh and times that buy ten and that’s how much calories you should have for your bug out bad or get home bag

I watch these videos and they drive me crazy. I'm going to say something that may sound sacrilegious to most of you but Dave Canterbury and his 5 C's are stupid. You need to ditch the setup that you have. Instead you need to buy a 40L- 50L backpacking backpack with a hip belt, internal frame and load lifters at the shoulders. In that backpack you need to put a 1 person tent that has a bathtub floor and a mosquito net, sleeping pad and a synthetic sleeping bag with the right temperature rating for the time of year. You will also need rain gear extra socks, camping towel and winter clothing if it's winter time. Other clothing is optional. For water purification instead of boiling water which is time consuming and very well might not be possible for various reasons. I recommend the katadyn befree water filtration system and extra empty plastic bottles. You will want one to three days worth of food MREs are good, SOS emergency rations are another option. You should also have a first-aid kit of some sort, mosquito spray, a mosquito net to go over your head, a flashlight, a headlamp and extra batteries and small knife. If you notice I haven't really said anything about a fire, because if you have rain gear, a tent, sleeping bag and a water filter you don't need a fire. Fires takes a lot of time and energy to make and maintain and if it's wet there's no guarantee that you're going to be able to start one. If your car breaks down at 8 at night and you start walking home and you decide at 1 in the morning that you're ready to bed down. Do you really want to have to build a fire to stay warm? Does that make sense? What if it's raining on the particular night that you are walking home? I'm not saying that you can't start the fire or that you can't keep it going. It just makes a whole lot more sense to climb inside a tent with a bathtub floor and lay on top of a sleeping pad and sleep inside a sleeping bag than to set up a 5 by 9 tarp with some reflective on the ground and try to use a fire to keep warm when it is pouring down rain. Another thing you should consider are tracking polls they are very useful if you have to walk a long distance. When you're done your whole setup, it should not weigh more than 35lb’s and you should be good to go.

No doubt every person's Get HOME Bag is going to look a bit different.... depending on how FAR from home one wanders. Sometimes I am only 20 miles away... while other times I am well over 100 miles away. The conditions will also matter.... a lot. If it's just that my car breaks down... that's one thing, but if it's a grid down and you can't get gas... that adds another whole dimension. Being able to collect and purify water is imho the most important element. Second might be to at least have a ponch, sos bivy, and a tarp. A way to start a fire and an alchohol stove seems like a no-brainer.. they are so small and easy to use... even in rain. I typically prepare for two different scenarios.. One involves staying WITH my car... the other is geared to leaving the car behind. Bottom Line: One's 'Get Home Bag' probably shouldn't look just like one's 'Get out of Dodge' bag.
