Sapporo Experimental Farm - "The Secret of Soil's Vitality" (Fields of Knowledge Series)
Hokkaido University's research and educational facilities are located in Sapporo and Hakodate Campuses throughout various parts of Hokkaido and in Wakayama. The total area of research (forests, farms, marine research centers, etc.) is approximately 70,000 ha, making it one of the world's largest facilities owned by a university. The "Field of Knowledge" series focuses on the vast research and education fields of Hokkaido University, and knowledge nurtured there through the advanced approaches.
In "Secrets of Plants' Vitality", we will introduce Sapporo Experimental Farm located in the Sapporo Campus. The farm started out as a model farm for local farmers under the guidance of Dr. Clark in 1876, when the Sapporo Agricultural College (Hokkaido University's predecessor), was established. We are joined by the Laboratory of Plant Nutrition, Research Faculty of Agriculture, whose members have been conducting experiments in one of the field's sections. Learn how the researchers are challenging themselves in discovering the mysteries of plants' adaptability against the undernourished environments and polluted soil.
