Anyone over 40 knows that Ronaldo was the best striker we've seen, the guy was a phenomenon - he could do anything with a ball and no one could stop him, injuries really ruined his legacy.

The lesson here was too much pressure on one player to carry his team to a World Cup took its toll. He was only 21 at the time. Zagallo really should have picked Romario to help him carry the burden.

As a frenchman living in Spain and after seeing his season playing for Barcelona I truely thought we had no chance… this problem he had gave me a bit of hope but still thought we were going to lose… even after winning 1-0, even after winning 2-0… brazil was just that scary at the time. In the past 15 years or so they never got teams as scary as the ones from 94-02

Pre-injury?yeah pre injury he was at his absolute best, totally agree one thing..He wasn’t the best player/striker in the Brazil squad though was he? Romario comfortably was. They played together enough to compare them. Ro-Ro combination, Romario scored more & made/assisted more goals. Also better with his headed goals & controlling pace of games.

Zidane won the World Cup and the Ballon D'or that year. From 1998 to 2001, Zidane was overall the man and when Ronaldo returned in 2002, he won the World Cup + Ballon D'or like Zidane 4 years before him.

France was awarded the World Cup in 98 with bribes and Platini admitted they set up the whole thing for a Brazil - France final. Zidane was probably the starter who played the fewer minutes, not even captain of his squad as his temperament would get in his way.

To this day I still believe that Nike had a clause in their kit manufacture's contract with Brazil that required Ronaldo to feature in big games (such as the WC final) as part of boosting kit sales. No way would a medical practitioner let a player who suffered a seizure take part in a contact sport just because the player insists they are fine.

Glad Ronaldo spoke back to him in Spanish (my native language) even though he understands English and could have responded in English. English native speakers should never take their language for granted, even if it is the world's lingua franca. Non native English speakers should always try to speak their native language as much as they can.

They had to do ANYTHING to stop him even at that age WAS SCARY and to make a little documentary on how to stop him aswell. I dont know one player in history who has that presence like he did and they all feared him because pf the way he plays and that SCARY SPEED.

The story could have been different maybe if Zagallo had taken Romario to tag team with Ronaldo and Rivaldo in the 1998 world cup. Brazil still could have won by larger margins if Romario also went in 2002 team of Scolari.

A seleção brasileira tinha capacidade de vencer está copa com ou sem o Romário. Eu não acredito na história do R9, já que a confederação da seleção brasileira (CBF), tem diversos casos de corrupção, além de que a FIFA também tem muita sujeira. Muitos brasileiros acreditam que a final foi vendida para frança, pois todos os jogadores estavam apáticos e jogando muito mal, pra vc ter ideia, a seleção brasileira jogou mais no 7 a 1 do que nessa final.

@@TheBluCannon I think Brazil could have won the world title in 1998 if Romario played with Ronaldo and Rivaldo. They won undefeated the Fifa confederations Cup in 1997. It is a big mistake done by Zagallo who had issues with Romario, but Brazil could have won that year if he was on the team. 2002 team could have been more dominant as a champion with Romario as well even though they won without him that year.

I was very sad because brazil had a super team, did a great world cup 98 and this final was terrible for them, zidane left them speechless, but i think ronaldo was on heavy pression to win and maybe nervous

You know what’s amazing about Ronaldo is he never scored *beautiful* goals. It’s that opponents couldn’t predict him, and nobody could stop him from scoring, not even Oliver Kahn in 2002. That was part of his magic was just how prolific he was in doing whatever it takes to get that ball in the back of the net. That was what it was like to watch Ronaldo.

1998 wc final, ronaldo was sick after having food poisoning. 2006 quarter final, ronaldo was on his decline compare to 1998 and 2002.

@@nagiyanagi6501 And 2002 Kahn was a phenomenon. You have to have watched it to really know. Only 1 goal allowed total by Kahn out of all 6 matches leading up to the Final. Then Ronaldo scored 2 on him. In 1998 vs. France, the whole world knew Ronaldo was sick *before the game even started.* I even knew myself when I watched the game live.

After the semis with Netherlands, I remember Roberto carlos telling a Netherlands player 3-0 with his hands. They were talking, I can't read lips but it was weird that he was signaling the final score against france.

Lo que me parece increible es que Ronaldo jugara el partido en esa condición y en el 2014, el Real Madrid enviara una carta que impidió a Di Maria jugar la final ante Alemania cuando después de Messi, él era el jugador más importante, sin embargo lo aceptaron. Jugadores como Rinaldo o Maradona que jugaban x su seleccion así fuera en una pierna así tuvieran que ir contra todos incluyendo su club, ya no existen. Hoy vemos como el Manchester United le prohibió a Garnacho ir a jugar el mundial sub 20 y nadie dice nada... una pena.
