Great review! What is the gain on your interface? Do you require a cloud lifter?
@levelupwithmikenewman
@levelupwithmikenewman Жыл бұрын
I use the Zoom Podtrak p8, I can’t remember exactly how much gain I had on it, but my interface has 75db of built in gain, so I never need a cloud lifter for any mic. However, I do remember that this mic required half the gain that the Rode Podmic did, and that is saying something. My only knock is the capsule is too close to the end of the cage, so I bought the SM7B pop filter that is an inch longer, and that created the gap between the the capsule and your mouth for when you need to be up close for voice overs or if you naturally like to have the mic 2-6 inches rather than 10-12” 👍🏻 because it is so powerful without a lot of gain. 👍🏻

Thank you! I have had to deal with a medical condition this past year that damaged my nervous system that controls my organs functions, so I have struggled to speak, breath, etc. When I would get a few days where I felt good, I would make a video. Unfortunately, making videos once every two months doesn’t put you in the KZfaq algorithm, but I kept pressing knowing eventually in a year or two I would recover enough to make videos once a week. So here I am, finally in a good place and gearing it up. Thanks for the positive support, it truly means a lot after the struggles this past year. @Freedom For Our Sons no I did not. Wasn’t sure at first, but because of my condition the Doctors actually advised against them because of the testing had to go through, since I never had Covid or any antibodies in blood tests, they wanted to keep the vaccine out of my system to eliminate anything that would create a false positive or negative Covid test result. The doctors at Hopkins are bringing me in to study my condition because it is so rare in how I got it, what it’s still doing to me a year later, etc. Just glad I’m healed enough to be able to get 2 hour windows each day of normal, which has allowed me to be able to really invest in Themis KZfaq channel! My wife and I each bought one of these. We have a nice selection of pro mics but we prefer this one. One tip is if you get plosives more than you want just pull the windscreen out 1/2" to create some space between the end of the screen and the end of the mic. You can also cut a little circle of open cell foam or something and put it inside. Another tip is if you use XLR with a preamp that doesn't sound as good near max gain you can use a booster with this mic and solve the problem. You can use a cloud lifter or on a budget the Klark Teknik CT 1 is much cheaper and works great.

@@LeedsUnitedCommunity you can use the K688 with any tablet or phone camera with a usb-c connection with it. If you want to use a studio mic as an xlr mic with a Sony camera like the ZV-e10, you can get a focusrite Vocaster 1 as an interface. Plug the mic into it, and plug the camera into vocaster 1 and the camera will record that audio with your video. If you want to use a mic that sounds great yet works for both cameras and your studio, you can use the deity vMic D4 shotgun mic as a usb mic for your computer, or as a mic plugged into your camera via the 3.5mm input. I can say for certain that this pop filter amzn.to/3XecPYq does fit, it is a tad longer in length , but it works to benefit of your sound. The small gap between the capsule and the end of the pop filter allows for the air carrying your vocals to slow down even more before reaching the capsule inside the housing, giving it an ever better sound. I use it myself for my voiceovers to really knockout any plosives because I keep the mic about 1 inch away from my mouth when doing the voiceovers or audio only podcasts.

The plastic ring around the base of the filter makes it a difficult fit. Any SM7B pop filter that you use for this mic MUST NOT have that plastic ring on it.

Best camera dollar for dollar is the Sony ZV-E10. amzn.to/3wzaD2F It is universally considered the best camera for KZfaq video creation for both live streaming and recording in 4K with excellent color. Anything more expensive ( the A7 series) is loaded with features that you will never even need or use for live-streaming. The Sony ZV-E10 gets an A+ in every category for KZfaq capabilities. As far as a boom arm, the ride PSA 1 is the best in my opinion at $99. A decent option for a Budget boom arm in the Bomge amzn.to/3kGgS1K. @levelupwithmikenewman Жыл бұрын
I actually just used it for a voice over in my last video. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gZuJqtaTtLPSaXU.html at 5:23 minute mark. If you want to use it for that though, I would recommend getting a 3rd party pop filter, I posted a link to that pop filter in the description above for this video. The pop filter it comes with is thin at the top, so when you position the mic 1-2inches away for the voice overs, the plosives are really present unless you use a SM7B pop filter. It is a little longer, so it creates a gap between the end of the mic and the capsule inside, which allows for the air carrying your sound to slow down in that gap before reaching the capsule inside. The pop filter I use was only $7. I also used it for the voice over in this video during the unboxing, (starting at the 13:46 mark) and that is using it without any sound treated panels nearby as I spoke into the mic.

My personal choice for me would be the k688 for spoken word. Grab a SM7B pop filter from Amazon to throw on it for plosives and it still is great. I am ok on the FDuce for a darker mic, but I personally struggle getting the sound I like when I try to eq some high end into it. The K688 ages well, which is why it’s priced has stayed consistently where it is, where other mics drop in price because the performance doesn’t age well with the hype during its release. 👍🏻

Not factoring build quality, or the Maono App for USB mode that you get with the PD400x, but solely for their PERFORMANCE IN SPOKEN WORD, I like the K688 more, it's just amazing for spoken word - especially at this price. I like everything else about the Maono Pd400x more as far as build quality and features. @levelupwithmikenewman
@levelupwithmikenewman Жыл бұрын
When I get crackly noises that pop up, 90% of the time it is coming from the cables. Try swapping out the cable usb or xlr and see if that does the trick. (A cable has 2-3 points of failure within it) wiring, make and female ends and the cable between) Most times it is because the cable is touching another cable or piece of equipment that is metal or carries power through it, but ultimately it is touching something that is creating interference in the signal. Other times it is the cable itself. XLR cables fail often at the connecting ends, and the usb cables do the same as well. Try that and see if that helped. If not that, you may need to adjust the balance between the mic’s gain and the volume itself. Using a noise gate can help with any residual noises that remain. Cables are usually the number one culprit to signal noises that creep up in your microphones audio.

Seems they realized the pop filter that used to come with it was not very effective at stopping plosives when speaking towards into the mic. I had to buy my own custom pop filter to address the plosives, looks like they took care of that for you 😁👍🏻

Ima be honest, its really really muddy. I think the xm8500 for 20 bucks is much clearer than this. But hey, to each everyone's opinions! For a usb/xlr mic though? Ya its something. It would be closer to compare to the shur mv7, that microphone is also both xlr and usb. Sm7b killer tho? Sorry that kinda screams clickbait and thats not good for a review channel. Especially to those looking to actually get into professional audio.

Honestly I own an XM8500, I actually own several. They are an awesome budget purchase for microphones and do sound great ( when adjusted). however were you feel that this mic sounds too muddy (which I respectfully disagree), I feel the XM8500 are way too thin at the bottom and two much in the high-end, but after some EQ’ing, it dials in just right. I have actually done a review on the XM 8500 compared to the Podmic on this channel, and how they sound identical after making some adjustments. But you said it perfectly, to each everyone’s opinions. I think the Sure SM7B is too muddy for $400, I’d rather pay $80 and adjust my audio to where I like it rather than pay $400 and still have to adjust it, then pay another $150 for an amplifier just to get it to sound the way it is supposed to sound. For a lot of live streamers out there, that is just way too much money to spend when considering all the other items you need just to get started! This mic is not for everybody, but I think we can both agree, there is no such mic that exists. 👍🏻 All we can do I’d find the sound that sounds the best to us, at the best price possible. Have a blessed day my friend!

An excellent option for guest microphones! $400 a pop for additional guests can definitely add up! I was using Behringer XM8500 mics EQ’d to sound like my Podmic. I feel ya brother! the main point of this video was how great this mic is for those who cannot afford to buy a SM7B to begin with, but really would love to have the great sound that it provides. That’s the beautiful thing about mics and voices. Different strokes for different folks! The Sure may have an edge in sound for some people, but in my opinion, not enough to charge my wallet an extra $300 for that difference when that money could be spent on upgrading your lighting, camera lenses, or camera itself! That’s why, in my opinion it is better. The Sure is $400 sound in a $400 mic. In my opinion, The Fifine is $400 sound coming out of a mic that cost you just $80. It’s the HUGE difference in price for a SMALL difference in sound (with more ways to use it) that makes it a SM7B killer 😉. difference But mics are like ice cream, plenty of great flavors and we all have our own favorites! Thanks for the commenting! One thing is for certain…there will never be a unanimous opinion on any mic on the market. All we can do share our thoughts on what we like and what we don’t like! Have a blessed one!

@@levelupwithmikenewman That is just wrong. It's the clarity and sound quality for actual music production that make the difference. The fifine is a nice budget usb mic but nothing more. You cannot compare some cheap 80 dollar usb mic to an actual studio microphone. Thats like saying the lamborghini is just as good as the fiat fiesta. The Fiesta uses less fuel to get you to the same spot and does the same thing.
@levelupwithmikenewman
@levelupwithmikenewman Жыл бұрын
@@3rr0rcs5 agree to disagree. Lamborghini is a paper weight to anybody who cant drive a manual transmission. Just like a person who does not like the sound of the SM7B may not have an audio mixer, or know who to EQ frequencies to adjust the audio to their liking. Then spending $400 on the mic plus another $150 for a cloudlifter to boot to end up that frustrated. Some just want something the sounds similar to SM7b without having a budget to make high-end luxury purchases. A Lamborghini is indeed a sweet supercar, but it is not more valuable to a person who needs their vehicle to pull a boat, or drive in snow. A pickup truck can be a better vehicle, (yet not worth as much as Lamborghini) depending on what they need it to do. A lot of larger channels believe paying that much for a microphone for the everyday live-streamer is overkill (Harris Heller, podcastage, to name a few). This video is for them too. Again, I appreciate the input 👍🏻 , we all have our favorite mics, our own opinions, and this video is my opinion that this mic is better when consider performance combined with the price tag. Value is always subjective to one persons needs versus another. Thanks for the feedback. You like the Sure SM7b better, I like the FiFine better. 🤷🏻‍♂️ that is the beautiful thing about mics. Everybody has their own favorite. 👍🏻

@@3rr0rcs5 it does at some point. Most ppl bought them just for streaming live broadcasting but not music instruments, cuz I see them on twitch all the time, which is what k688 excels at, thus making it a sm7b killer. It's like comparing FPGA to CPU, why would u need it to be good overall when u just use it for the particular part that it is very good at. What makes it even better is that with k688 u can even get it work on a cheap audio interface, making it a no brainer combo with absurd value for the cost
@3rr0rcs5
@3rr0rcs5 Жыл бұрын
@@yinitialize4930 There is your problem though. For you the SM7B is primarily a live broadcasting microphone, while its not. People use it for that because it may be really good in that use case but it's not meant for that. So NO, it is not an SM7B killer, it just maybe is better value for live broadcasting.

No. I WAS NOT paid, I was asked to simply do an honest review. I have had several companies reach out for me to do a review of their product, but have declined them all unless they agree that I am free to review it how I feel it does based on value, performance, and capabilities. They did not have any say in what I expressed in the review, nor did they get to see this review until after I published it for all to see on KZfaq. It is a great mic, and a great sound. That’s the beautiful thing about mics, you get to hear for yourself the audio of this mic as their is no EQ’ing during the review or in post. It is how it sounds out of the box. I am still using this mic for my podcasts on other channels, my Facebook livestreams, and client videos I make that require voice overs. When in doubt - leave my words out, and simply close yours eyes and listen to the audio for yourself and see if it is a mic you like, or dislike it. Many blessings my friend! 🙌🏻✝️🙌🏻

I think so, this mic sounds like xm8500 but thinner. Mine arrived last week and it's not even competing with the q2u, never mind my MV7 or the SM7B. I was hoping it would deliver the results but the mic itself distorts even with the gain low, its way too warm and mid range heavy which is almost impossible to fix with eq. Its ok for broadcasting/podcasting/gaming I guess, but that's it.
@levelupwithmikenewman
@levelupwithmikenewman Жыл бұрын
@@philsweeney22 I found if you use a thicker pop filter, it thickens a little more where I feel the stock pop filter allows for that thinner xm8500 range. That’s how I was able to get bigger low end presence on my Rode Podmic. It seems that the tip of the pop filter they give is too thin for those with a higher pitched voice yet helps those with a deeper voice. Just some of the things I have found while experimenting with it for my long-term review to come down the road. My son loves it and stole it for his livestream as he feels it is a perfect match for his voice. One thing is for sure, Mics perform differently depending on the frequency and pitch of the voice of the one using it. Definitely needs to be a synergy between the two unless you are gifted with great EQ skills that allow you to compensate and overcome the bridge between the two 👍🏻 thanks for watching the vid!!
