Love that you decided to take a more minimalist approach this year given that you are pregnant and setting up an entire classroom is time/money consuming! It's ridiculous that teachers have to pay to have nice classrooms for their students.

You nailed it :-) setting up a classroom is very very time consuming and unfortunately can be extremely money consuming. And past years I’ve spent minimum of $250-$500 each start of the year, and that’s not even including all the stuff I purchased throughout the school year. It kind of felt nice to be more simplistic and realistic this year. Taking a vantage of everything that I have an at the school offers because yikes My bank account always takes a serious hit. Not going to lie though, as nice as it was this year to save the money I do miss all the fun little odds and ends things that I buy for my room. There’s always next year :-)

Where I live, in a rural area with only 1 of each level of school, the classrooms are so much smaller than yours. Parents have to provide everything, even some of the teachers supplies. But I know the teaches in this area don’t make very much. My husband works retail (non management) and makes more than the teachers do. It amazes me the differences in schools in different areas of the country.

Good for you not killing yourself for the classroom this year. The kids will still have an amazing time, but so many changes are about to happen in the building and in your life, and this is just part of that "self care!!" I hope you have a wonderful year.

When I was in school we had desks with a built in cubby/shelf underneath to store books & supplies in...except for kindergarten where they had small tables for 3-4 kids to sit around.

We currently live in NM but my daughter has said she wants you to be her 5th grade teacher for as long as I can remember. She just started 4th grade =)

Ooohhh I also teach upper house and would love a two way mirror in the closet. It's not even to spy it's just accidents happen. But I hate the idea of rolling desks, they can easily unlock it. But so cute how excited you are.

Have you ever tried putting command hooks on the back of the chairs for their backpacks? I was going to suggest using Velcro strips for the desk to hold a pencil case on their desks but you mentioned you don’t want anything stuck on them.

So funny that you mention that. When I went into the third grade classroom they used velcro strips for pencil cases to hold some of their Supplies and it looked really nice and clean and organized. I still might possibly go to the dollar tree and stock up on the materials for that :-)

Also I love the idea of using the command hooks for their backpacks. I would need to talk to my administration for money for the hooks because I know the hooks that are sturdy enough to hold the weight of a backpack are like $10 for a pack of five and I would need 26 of them. But seriously awesome suggestion

Love this so much! I’m really not trying to push myself this year with classroom setup. Instead I would like to focus on actual lessons rather than how the room looks. Good luck this year, hope you have a great one!

Preach :-) love this comment. Cannot agree more. I rather put the time and effort into day-to-day interactions with the students rather than setting up a costume that’s probably going to change 100 times before the end of the year :-) best of luck on your new year

Love the desks! Because of covid we had to distance students 2m apart! This year they changed it to 1m :)

I’m so glad you wrote this because last year was a disaster with trying to set up classrooms to be Covid safe. We did not get any protocol for this year so I’m hoping how I set it up works however I’m almost positive I’m going to change it another 10 to 15 times LOL most indecisive human on the planet right here. I’m wondering with this new variant if we’re going to be required to use the plexiglass again and keep students all socially distanced. Last year was just wild!

@@themissalliecakes I know right but with desks like this it will be a breeze! Here in eastern Canada and in my school district they decided that because of the variant, pregnant teachers will not teach in class since they find it too risky. I'll be assigned to online tasks until I give birth pretty much! It is wild!

I’ve seen those but I’ve always felt guilty about other people buying things for my classroom. I have seen a lot of people have success with fund my classroom so that’s always an option for the future :-)

@@themissalliecakes don’t feel guilty. Supplying a class room is EXPENSIVE and people who buy things from your wish list are people who WANT TO help you with your classroom. Let them help you girl.

The wheely desks are nice and all but that shape would drive me nuts! You can’t put them nicely in a row all facing the front without a bunch of gaps/wasted space between them. It’s like your classroom, strange shape to work with. It would drive me nuts too 😂

Our classroom shape and size Makes me cringe LOL I’m pretty much used to it at this point but back to school season always reminds me of how terrible our classrooms were constructed when I watch 1 million back to school teacher classroom set up videos and see just how modern and spacious some are LOL

I don’t but I think I should look into one. I’ve always felt weird about people spending their own money to help supply things for my classroom. I’ve always been the type that if I can’t get it from the school I’ll just get it myself because it’s my room/ my responsibility. Having an Amazon wish list would be super helpful though. Totally something to think about in the future :-) thank you thank you

Wow i’m so sorry your paid maternity leave is so short! I’m pretty sure in Canada we get 8 or 9 months, the states are wild

I always envy that about Canada ♥️ Truthfully that is the way that it should be. You just spent 10 months growing a child and then most jobs in the United States will only give you three months tops for maternity leave. With teaching I can take up to two years off but I’ll only get paid for 65 days of it and that’s if you have 65 sick days.

I live in canada you get 12 months at 55% of your pay or 18 months at 33% of your pay

Depends on the province! Here in Quebec is 3 months 100%, then you have a few weeks at 70 or more depending on your employer and the rest of the year is 55%. I took 11 months and it was the standard here :)

I’m not sure if you watch the little segment where I showed in this video how the world with desks luck, I know this is a long video LOL but Badescu lockdown. Once my co teacher and I are sold on the set up we’re going to mark all of the desks and face :-)

the school district that my kids go to is the EXACT same one that I went to, and NOTHING has changed in terms of the curriculums and stuff, but there are ALOT of differences as well when it comes to celebrating the different types of holidays. Just to put that out there I am only 14 yrs older than my 15-year-old daughter, but that's another story. if you are wondering, I am an American who moved from Nashville to LA at age 11, my school has two buildings and the older building was back home in Nashville, but the director of our school decided that this building was too small, so everyone had to move to LA, so it was perfect for me because I didn't need to go to a new school. i have a feeling that people are going to question my me about giving birth as a young teen, my mom is a First Nations citizen so it is traditional for girls to get married young, I got pregnant immediately after I got married and it is VERY common in the Native American and First Nations cultures, so yeah.

Oh my gosh. I’m a hop skip and a jump away from Massachusetts in I feel for you so much. This heat has been brutal… I can’t even imagine setting up a classroom under those conditions or just teaching in general under those conditions. Very best of luck in your new year :-)

You mentioned not having students’ backs to the front, is it possible to instead of 4 wheels of 6 to have 8 one-half wheels of 3 with each one-half wheel facing front? Now I want a PB&J!

I am newly obsessed again with PB&J sandwiches LOL I love the idea of moving the furniture around so the backs are not to the board. However with such weird shaped classrooms to do groups of four or even five takes up a lot more space and then the room just becomes claustrophobic. Looking forward to trying out some otherLayouts when I meet my co-teacher next week :-)

Do students at this school not bring in their own school supplies? Is it supposed to be provided by you? I thought most schools have school supply lists per class/grade for the supplies each student needs to bring?

I work in a very very low income district so although some parents/most parents will provide students with supplies, many come in with little to none unfortunately. We try our best to provide them with everything they will need for a successful year :-)

That’s an excellent question that I didn’t really account for LOL once I meet my co-teacher next week We can absolutely move the classroom furniture around to accommodate for everyone. Personally I’ve never really used a desk in the past. I have just use that back ledge but we are trying to D clutter our house right now to make room for baby number two so I figured I just bring in my desk. This will be the first time I have a teacher desk in years. We could either share that desk Oregon move the furniture around :-)
