This is a discussion topic video about the fifth generation of videogame consoles. This will be part one of my seven part mini-series. This will be a general video about almost all of the nine (yes really) consoles, the FM Towns Marty, Commodore Amiga CD32, NEC PC-FX, 3DO, Atari Jaguar, Apple Pippin, Sega Saturn, Sony Playstation, and Nintendo 64.

I was born in 1991. I remember playing the snes at my cousins house when i was like 7. In about 1998 my dad bought me a n64. This was the first generation of console i really feel apart of.

This is my favorite gen of all time. The gimmickyness, the charm of those polygons, the nostalgia, and most of all, the sheer variety of games you could play. One would argue that the N64 was just for kids for it's smorgasbord or E rated platformers, the Playstation was for adults for all the survival horror, or that sega was just for die hard Sega fanboys, all three platforms actually had an even mix of E-M rated titles, spanning multiple genres and sub genres. And that's not even including the PC. The only "kiddie" platform was the Gameboy, and even that had a few T rated titles.

+Logan Gaastra No I didn't, the Virtual Boy isn't a console. Technically, despite its odd nature, it's a handheld or portable device.

Adam Koralik hate to break it to you but a bunch of video game historians and even old articles from different electronics and economic Outlets stated Sega Genesis won the 4th generation that had between 52% and 55% of the console Market.

Indeed that is a good question why it's not more common knowledge. Other than most people in positions of influence today are Nintendo biased. Heck the Sega Master System did better in the UK and Brazil than the NES did. In fact they are still making brand new Sega Master systems in Brazil to this very day 😌 .

fifth gen is probably my favorite, maybe because it was part of my childhood although I grew up with SNES, but I always found the fifth gen as a benchmark of new and even risky possibilities in gaming, one of the reasons why the first Playstation is my all time favorite console, not trying to be a Sony follower or a PS fanboy but most games that I loved were on PS1, btw I'm not really fond of 8th gen

I love my PS1 with a passion! It really showed the power videogames create display, not just gameplay wise, but with stunningly beautiful music and fantastic, immersive stories. So many fantastic games were on it too, with MGS, Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Crash Bandicoot, Ape Escape, Wipeout and so much more. It was truly a beautiful machine!

This generation had the one console I mostly regret never to own, the Sega Saturn. I wanted the N64, but my dad said Playstation is better, so I choose the Playstation and yes, for me this was the best choice. The Saturn I didn't see in the big electronic markets here in Germany in 1997, only Playstation and N64. And I didn't know anyone who had one.

Nice, loved the other generation series you did. Looking forward to this one. On another note, I was born into the NES gen as well, but when my mates were playing that, I was playing my dads 2600 and commodore +4. Learning how to load a game from cassette by my self when I was 3 years old was a proud moment apparently (I'm sure you know how much of a pain in the arse those things were)

I was born in 1987, so the fifth generation was the first generation that I was old enough to experience the generation from the beginning. I had a PS1 and an N64. The first console I owned during it's lifespan was an SNES, but I didn't have one until 1994. The only Sega console I own is a Dreamcast; I never owned a Sega console during their lifespans. I want a Sega Saturn, very badly.

N64 did 3-D the best. I don't ever remember people coming over to play Playstation, but people always came over to play Goldeneye, WCW wold Tour, Mario Kart, and Duke Nuke'em 64 was even four player and two player co-op. That makes the N64 king of the 5th generation in my opinion, despite the sales data.

***** I really like the strategy games on the PS. It had Warcraft 2, and some of the command and conquer games. I suppose what I didn't care for about the PS were the loading times and the heavy use of FMV. You'd see this cool looking FMV, then it would cut to some really crappy 3-Dish game play.

***** No, the playstation had WC2. The N64 was supposed to get it. The N64 did have a version of Command and Conquer which wasn't bad. The Starcraft port was really good in my opinion, it even had a split screen mode for two player.

Fantastic series! I can't wait to watch your opinion about the individual consoles on future episodes. I love how each console from the 5th generation has a more unique, interesting and attractive product design; they look as video game consoles as opposed to the current consoles looking more like a VCR or CD/DVD/Blu-Ray Player. Minor note: technically NEC's PC-FX was the successor to the PC Engine SuperGrafx, which was a newer stand alone updated PC Engine. I believe this console has the smallest game library ever: only 5 exclusive games made for this system + 2 that are PC Engine games that plays with enhanced graphics on the SuperGrafx.

KaBlamBandicoot64 I don't think I said "kids don't understand gaming". I believe I said something like "unless you grew up with this you may not get this the same way." There is a distinct difference between learning something from the direct experience and from studying it retroactively. I understand World War II history, but learning about it doesn't make me a war veteran, and I wouldn't claim it does. Some experiences simply require that you were there, that's all I'm saying.

I had played other consoles as well, like the jaguar, genesis, and even an intellivision, but the first time i had multiple consoles and knew what the hell was going on exactly in the world of video games was the 6th generation. AdamKoralik All well and good stating that these companies eventually went under Adam, but...Nintendo and the NES where non-existent in Europe and gaming was very strong on the home computer market in Europe even more so in the UK and Ireland. Dont get me wrong Adam its not a huge deal its just that not all markets had shunned games like north america did. It was the North American crash not a global crash. Nintendo dragged the north american market back, the global gaming market was fine....doesn't really matter tho mate. Keep the cool vids coming.

I know the Sega MegaDrive beat the Nintendo SNES in popularity in Europe, Australasia & South America, but i also reckon the Sega MasterSystem beat the Nintendo NES in Europe & Australasia, too. For whatever reason, Sega always seemed more popular over here in Great Britain.

So then is the Third generation of consoles the Lone Ranger generation of gaming Due to the fact that the NES/Famicom was virtually homogeneous minus the fact that there was the Sega master system/Sega mark III was popular in The Pal regions, and South America (which is still being produced there to this day) and Atari 7800 which was even more of a dark horse. All of which was because of Nintendo's strict control of third parties (at least here in North America).

Isn't any doubt that those lesser known video games consoles were part of this generation. I bought both an Atari Jaguar and later Sony Playstation. And knew of the others as I was very interested in the video games consoles around in this generation. Even when I bought the Sony Playstation it didn't replace the Atari Jaguar. I ran both consoles off the same television, and switched between the two, using a Scart switch box. I was lucky enough to be a video gamer, who was part of the first video games console generation. And how times have changed. Anyway a very good video.

Thank you for mentioning the Apple console. I was 9 or 10 when this thing was released/hyped and I almost split my birthday and Christmas money with my brother to get this. Then I saw a PSX demo with loaded and Street fighter Alpha. I was smitten.

Besides the second generation, I think this is the most unique one. You have all of these consoles. And I like each one of them. Yes, even the Jaguar. Each console had its good and bad games.

Nice video. I don't know how old you are, but I'm 30. I started with the Master System II back when I was very little. It must have been around the time the Mega Drive was launched, as I got the Master System II from my older brother, who bought a Mega Drive I at that time. In both the fourth and fifth generation I really participated and bought my own games and stuff. I liked them both very much (at the time for me the Mega Drive and PSX and later Saturn), but in hindsight I would pick the fourth generation over the fifth. This really has to do with the new 3d-games you talked about. I was new and exiting, but also aged more over time.

another thing to note was that Unlike the Super NES and Sega the Towns Marty and the Amiga CD32 were the first 32-bit CD consoles. The Amiga CD32 claims to be the first (actually was after the Marty), but since the FM Towns was only released in Japan the Amiga CD32 would have been the first CD based 32-bit console worldwide.

There's actually 12 home consoles released in the fifth generation Adams. The Amiga CD32, the Playdia, and the Casio Loopy were all part of it too though the Amiga 32 was only released in Europe whereas both the Playdia and Casio Loopy was only released in Japan similar to the FM Towns Marty.

Will you get to do the Third gen Adam? Would love to hear your retrospective thoughts on that era, and all the flopped consoles of that time. Good coverage here of the lesser systems, I was thinking at first you missed the CD-i, but then remembered that's classed as 4th gen. It's true it was Nintendo's playing field until Sony popped up, funny how things have gone since then. It is a shame Sega bowed out, would be nice to see a DC2 or something along those lines. Great vid, very enjoyable.

The fifth generation was also an important time in the UK as it marked the transition from computers to consoles. Sure the Master System and Mega Drive did well over here, but it wasn't until the fifth gen where peoples interest in consoles really gained.

I really like how you talk about people in the 80s. Television, microwaves, fridge we're not necessarily impossible to broke, but people weren't upgrading their electronic stuff very often. They are two reason for this, the first one is because the industry know how to creates needs nowadays more than they use to in the 80s. For example, I never felt the need to upgrade my dvd to Bluray until a saw one Bluray in action. The other reason is because of the concept of Planned obsolescence. In the 80s or even in the 90s, if you television wasn't working anymore, it was possible to repair it. Nowadays if your plasma television breaks you can't repair it at all. The industry knew they would sell more if their product would be manufacture less durable than before. That is why people in the 80s weren't like us in how they consume their products.
