Hey Fig Fam!
Hope all of your winter gardening prep is going well. I have had my first round of fig cutting propagation success and I'm moving some of the young fig trees to 1 gallon pots!
Curious on when and how to move your fig tree and fruit tree cuttings into garden pots? Come take a look and see how I up-pot my fig trees. I go over what I look for, how my cuttings are doing after about 6-8 weeks. What potting mix I am using, and I go over 3 different examples and how I water them and store them in my greenhouse.
How are you fig cuttings doing this year?! Let me know your thoughts as well as your results!
Learn, Grow, Share,
Phil

Ack just seeing this post now. Thanks man for the support! I hope your growing season is going well this summer! I have to pick your brain at some point about my citrus dropping fruit. My kimbrough satsuma looks like it's putting out some good fruit, but the fruit has been yellowing and dropping in recent weeks. Take care!

Hi Phil! Thanks for sharing. I have a couple of cuttings that have tons of leaves and lots of roots circling around in the clear solo cup I have them in. This gave the courage to up pot them in a few days.

Good to know about the Col De Dame's being so sensitive to transplanting. I am rooting my first cutting of CDD Blanc, if it roots I'll make sure to be careful when up potting to minimally disturb the roots.

Yep and they can take awhile to root as well! Definitely one to be patient for!

Would the root ball stick better with less disturbance if they were damp? I know I’ve lost many at that transition and am always trying to eliminate as many hurdles as possible. Appreciate the updates and info.
@Philsfigs
@Philsfigs 4 ай бұрын
Possibly, but the fear would be rotting the cutting right? It's also me balancing the figs with my heat mats too. I wonder if it may be more beneficial to root directly in to more of a potting mix and mixing some compost in there so they can thrive after initial rooting.
@DeanFamilyAcres
@DeanFamilyAcres 4 ай бұрын
@@Philsfigs agreed, there is a balance. Would the risk of rot be higher than the risk of stress and killing the cutting? Or is it even a 1:1 risk for each? I know with other up potting, I usually try to have them semi damp. I’m using Promix BX this time which might help. 🤷‍♂️
@Philsfigs
@Philsfigs 4 ай бұрын
@@DeanFamilyAcres I wish I knew the risk ratio, but it may be conditional to each person's growing environment, you know? So the jouney continues lol! I do think using promix may change the game for me but I don't want to pay that kind of money at scale. I think i may benefit from a mycorrhiza amendment though for the cuttings.

@@Philsfigs This year is only my second rooting figs. I used DIY mix last time and only had ~20% survive to 3 gallon uppotting. This year I tried to up my game to try and get a better yield. I figure even if I spend $100 on cuttings and all the supplies I still can make a profit it I sell any. Goal this year is to grow out and be able to sell or trade cuttings in the future. Phil, this winter I was offered fig hardwood cuttings some of which came from original Italian/Greek stock and they have rooted beautifully in sand! I am excited. That gives me now about 16 varieties of figs. Is it Wilmington, NC or Delaware??? You just said Southeast so I am assuming NC.

Good video Phil. Question, at 2:07 you show a Stella in the back that doesn't look so good. Will that bounce back or is that gone? I have some cuttings that look like that now and I don't know if they will come back or not. The initial growth looked good and then the cold front that came through and I moved them inside got to them. Thanks for sharing.
@Philsfigs
@Philsfigs 4 ай бұрын
Thanks! That one in the back is gone. I did drop another pot on it at one point that fell on it one day, but when I checked it this week after the video and pulled it up, I noticed it was already on its way out and had begun to decay after it wilted. It did not survive.

I've brought them back before but only a few times. if they do come back it may be from below the soil line. However if you see rot then they're done unfortunately.@@superdave336

Phil great video. I'm in Winston Salem and after I up pot I get invaded by gnats. Any suggestions?
@Philsfigs
@Philsfigs 4 ай бұрын
Thank you for the support! I think the gnats will invade the soil that is damp and see the wet organic material on the top. you will have to deter them from the soil so they don't lay eggs and inoculate your soil with fungus. Try doing some sort of dressing on the surface of your soil with inorganic material. I looked up different strategies since I don't have too much of an issue myself (YET!) but it looks like if the top is is covered then they do not stick around. I saw diatomaceous earth, perlite, and even vermiculite would apply to this strategy. What are your thoughts?
@Philsfigs
@Philsfigs 4 ай бұрын
I have also heard and apply this strategy that airflow helps keep the gnats away. They like stagnant air, adding a fan will keep them off of the area and consistent wind will help the fig cuttings root and leaf out as well!

Hey just wondering, when rooting figs in an indoor greenhouse environment does the fig mosaic virus thrive more in this setting. Also I have taken cittings from a random city street tree and I am noticing the leaves are not really wanting to grow much, even though there are lots of roots. I have been using the sand propagation method from Plant Fanatics, and im still new to propagating figs.
@Philsfigs
@Philsfigs 4 ай бұрын
I think FMV is dependent on the host. So if the setting stresses the host (ie fig cuttings) with poor growing conditions or limited roots (bc the cuttings is so new) the more dominant FMV will be present in the cutting. It's like an indirect relationship it seems. Some varieties are more susceptible to it more than others but as the cutting grows it will age out of it over time. I also can see a vast difference in infection from cutting to cutting too which is interesting. Hope that helps! Its like herpes in humans where if you're stressed or sick the virus will flare up and present itself.

@@Philsfigs Ok thanks, the tree was very old, growing in a little square not much more than two feet in the middle of a sidewalk and I don't think it gets any nutrients or water. Also I could still be too soon, my cuttings are only around 4-5 weeks old

What season is the best for up potting.
@Philsfigs
@Philsfigs Ай бұрын
Winter is a great time of year to up-pot your figs as the trees are still dormant and you can prune the rootball up to about 1/3 off and the tree will be safe! When the tree is awake and growing you can certainly uppot but you want to leave the root-ball alone as not to cause any transplant shock. I still transfer all times of year depending on if the fig has outgrown the container and needs to grow more! So you can uppot any time of year, but if you want to root prune as well then wait until the winter.

How long were those figs in the tree pots before you uppotted them?
@Philsfigs
@Philsfigs 4 ай бұрын
These ones were the early front runners. looking at about 6 weeks of growth for the smaller ones and about 2 months of growth for the Norella. A lot of the other figs these were rooted with - you can see in the greenhouse - still need more time.

Why are you not u p into a bigger pot 5 gallon instead of 1 gallon? In general why we shouldn't up pot for much bigger pots
@Philsfigs
@Philsfigs 4 ай бұрын
drainage and moisture play a big part in this. for a new baby tree the quantity of material and moisture can be too much and overwhelming for a small tree and it will stay too damp for the young tree that needs drainage. Also water distribution can play a role where dry spots can occur where water is and isn't flowing and roots will not get the water as well. Another reason is stability and root development. Gradual uppotting is better for root growth and vigor where moving it into a large pot right away can stunt the growth rate of roots and thus the plant itself. Its not an end all be all situation you have to work with the pots and material you have! Hope this helps!

I couldn't finish watching the video because it seems like you are harming these little seedlings. Moving them into larger pots at this stage may not be the best idea. It is recommended to wait until they grow a bit more and fertilize them in their current pots. I hope you won't lose any more seedlings.

Hey I get it. I knew it was going to be pushing the comfort of a few of us fig growers. I have lost a few cuttings. I was also a little weary to do it myself, but after doing it enough times I wagered the risk for a learning experience for us all. I agree and love your idea of just applying fertilizer to the cuttings and I may even incorporate more compost into my rooting mix as well. Thanks again for your feedback and I hope your growing season is going well!
