In this video, I walk you through behind the scenes on how I shot this bowl of lentil soup including the food photography lighting setup, my camera settings, the specific type of diffusion material I use, how I styled the photo, and much more!
For you visual learners, I hope this helps a ton! because I don't say a word in it haha.

I love how you use the most simple food choice(an apple, a lemon, a bowl of cereal, a muffin, etc) for demonstration. Sometimes, it's harder to photograph simple foods compare to a fancy plate. This makes lighting more important in order to create an interesting photo that tells story using simple ingredients. Learnt so much from you. Appreciate it!

Thanks a lot. Only yesterday I was trying to do something similar where I added a second flash to create a sun streaking in kind of effect. Two questions, the diffusion material you using, is it something like translum? And what strength translum you recommend, when starting with one? The roll is like $90 and amazon only has 2 stop one (heavy).
@figandlight
@figandlight 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Bobby, thanks for watching! 1. I think it's very similar to translum actually (based on what only saw through a youtube video haha). But I'm not 100% sure. 2. It's hard for to recommend something I haven't tried. But ultimately I think it depends. My first roll was the 1/2 density soft frost cause i always tend to lean towards hard light. So if i were to pick one to recommend for you I'd pick the lightweight option. Hope that helps! Thanks again

Sometimes is good to just observe, so I like a quiet workshop like this one, from time to time. Good choice of music! Many videos include extremely annoying music and that ruins it. I would like to know why f7.1? Why not a full stop, f8.0 in this case?
@figandlight
@figandlight 4 жыл бұрын
That's good to know, thank you! Good question. I don't have a specific reason for 7.1 itself, but it was just a matter of exposure. I'm always looking at my histogram in Capture One to see if I either need to adjust my flash power or my aperture. I rarely change my shutter and my ISO when shooting in a studio setting and 7.1 just happened to be a sweet spot. Is there a benefit to shooting at a full stop (i.e. 8.0) that I don't know about?? haha

Question: can this be done with a speedlight?
@figandlight
@figandlight 4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. The only problem I'd run into is finding a modifier similar to the one I used in the video, which all it did was increase the size of the light source, BUT kept the light specular (by taking off the diffusion material attached to it). With a speedlight, what I would do is bounce the flash into an umbrella and point the umbrella's backside into the scene for a similar effect. Hope that helps! thanks for watching Mo! hope all is well.

@figandlight

One thing I forgot to mention, if you do turn the umbrella around, the umbrellas front side that is turned around would need to be flagged off so as to not bounce any light into from whatever's behind it. hope that made sense
